This is so sad! And poor Mary had such a harsh unfair life AND death. People portray her as the mean ugly sister. This is one of the only times I see Mary as more of a normal girl than a mean cruel cold bitch
I am so glad that someone finally portrayed Princess Mary as such a lovely young woman. So often she is portrayed so harshly, whereas all contemporary accounts of her was that she was a beautiful child and a beautiful young woman. Philip tried so hard to win her hand, even after he was sent away, he still continued to petition Henry to come to England, continued to hope to marry her. Proof of Philip's love for Mary? He never married.
@aglistningvale I really do agree with you. She was lovely and still very young at the time. If Duke Philip married her, her future could've been so different. I also agree with you on people portraying Princess Mary so harshly. She was having problems too, you know whereas her father falling in love with another woman. I really do wish they could've married. Ah, alas, that was many, many years ago.
@Tonganpride1000 The Tudors is very loosely based off of King Henry VIII of England's life. I say loosely because this show takes incredible license with time lines, characters, events, etc.
@Tonganpride1000 I'm not sure if anyone ever replied to you, but yes the story of Mary Tudor and Philip of Barvaria is true. See my comment on this video.
@aglistningvale but was she ever in love with him? Or was it just a dance she was forced to "try out" if you know what i mean... she was already getting arranged for marrige at age 6.
@Tonganpride1000 From eveything I've read, I believe she was. Mary was starving for love; she'd been separated from her mother for three years when Queen Katherine died, the father that had adored her had cast her aside for years until Jane Seymour became Queen. Princess Mary had been reduced to the status of bastard & now titled "the Lady Mary." She might still have been in the "falling in love" stages when Duke Philip was sent away, but I do believe she was quite devastated when he left.
"You didn't step on my foot. How could you? Your feet don't even touch the ground." I think my heart died after that line. Poor Mary, I wish she could have been happy.
@GenieJackman Oh, my I so agree with you. What a shame they were separated. I left a longer comment on the page, but did you know, Philip never married anyone? True Story.
Mary, you married the wrong Philip! Philip of Spain is nothing but a jerk, Duke Philip of Bavaria is a much better choice for you! But alas, your cruel bastard of a father had to send him away and make you miserable. Bravo Henry, bravo.
Whoever choreographed that dance knows nothing about dance in this period.
Why does this series care nothing about historical detail - from the costuming to the dancing to...well you name it. And why does the King never age or get fat?
Very sweet scene. Poor Lady Mary. When she WAS young & beautiful & wishing, hoping to have love.... She NEVER had it. I hate Henry for that. I'm sure Katherine of Aragon was looking down from Heaven w/a broken heart. Thank you for posting.
@renesmee23cullen They're 10 years apart and I don't know the year they shot this but if its 2009, then "Mary" would have been 18 or so and he would have been about 28.
Mary looked sooo happy with him :) and he was truly in love with her, not for her position on the court but for herself. Phillip is probably the most decent man in the entire series. They would've been so happy together . DAMN YOU HENRY!! :@
@diam0nd94 this Phillip is german and lutheran is from Bavaria and the other, her second nephew ,was Phillip of Spain eleven years younger than Mary....
@IsabellaLadybug Indeed! I must admit I cried when he had to go back to Bavaria. Such a big and brief passion. I could even feel the same way Mary felt :(
Mary was also a beautiful redhead like her Mother Catherine of Aragon, many adaptations are inaccurate. Many think that because they were spaniards that they had black hair, but they weren't. They were of fair skin and red hair like Elizabeth and Henry. Evidence and history state this as well as the paintings.
Look at paintings of the Trastamaran dynasty/Catherine of Aragon's ancestors.
Many people don't know this but Mary was actually a redhead like her Mother Catherine of Aragon, Mary's grandmother Isabelle of Spain was actually a redhead as well. Look at the paintings of Catherine, Isabelle, & Mary and you will see. Mary and Catherine weren't brunette's like they showed on The Tudors. Henry VIII was also a redhead, which is where Elizabeth got her red hair from, Edward the VI was also redhead it's a trait from the Tudor line as well as in Catherine of Aragon's line.
This series series is way too sexed up mary was not very attractive henry didn't even took care of her or elizabeth.she was married to phillip a man which she loved but never loved her back ,she in comparison to elizabeth who had natural beauty looked like an old maid,so you have got to understand her bitterness
@brenda3285 She was reputed to be very beautiful when she was young, but you have to remember that they aged very rapidly in these days, and she was pretty horrifying by the time she actually got married, in her mid-thirties. You have to feel bad for her, though.
@Kiwinites Well I have heard from historians, that she looked like an old maid compared to elizabeth . phillip didn't even wanted to sleep with her and some say she remained a virgin .This is tv and that is why they are going to portrait her as a beautiful young woman.just saying.
@hogwartsluv she had a much better education and childhood, though. read carefully about mary's teenage years, and you have to feel bad for her, understanding why she became messed up for the rest of her life.
I also think that it's unfair that some people blame the Spainsh Philip.I know he had a son in Spain to look after,.also had his own country to rule .
It was his father Charles who broke the promise to marry Mary and passed this duty to his son and had happy hours with his young mistresses.Poor Mary and Philip,to have such fucking fathers.
I was suprised that the German Philip was still unmarried when he was nealy 40.He might have a difficult and unhappy life we know little about it. If they could get marry, their fate migh have changed.
Elizabeth and Mary both ordered the murders of hundreds of people, so when you think about it neither one is better than the other. Mary got married with Philip who didn't love her and she had no children. Elizabeth was sexually assaulted by Thomas Seymour and never got married. They both had messed up lives, but at least it looks a bit more glamorous on The Tudors.
She didn't hate men. The guys she fell inlove with cheated on her. And she didn't die a virgin she had sex but well it's a long story. Go watch Elizabeth.
is this the philp mary married in 1554 when she became queen,, why did they call her bloody mary???????????i think she killed a few poeple or something
Erm...no. It was less than 280. Not unusual at all for the time period she lived in. Also, look at he rlife, it isn't hard to see why she hated Protestantism.
Yeah, Sarah Bolger is very beautiful. But there is a strange mistake. Duke Philip of Bavaria never existed. There was only a Philip William of Bavaria who was Bishop of Regensburg and later cardinal. But he was born 18 years after Mary had died. So this relationship is a total fiction. She had only one man in her life, Philip II. King of Spain. He was her one and only love.
Well ok, I know whats wrong. He really existed but he was not duke of Bavaria. He was count of Palatine and Duke of northern Palatinate-Neuburg. His brother was the duke of southern Palatinate-Neuburg. That's why I didn't found him first. But there is no evidence that he ever was in England.

Finally, I found an article about him from 1888, mentioned in the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie, this was the first and only subject I found that confirmed he was in England and the lover of Mary and they were engaged.

Because of Marys status, she were not allowed to draw the widow's pension. This was maybe a reason for the annulment of the engagement.
I think it's sad about Philip and Mary. Her second Philip proved to be a dud. The first one she met in the bloom of youth-who knows what might have been if they had married. Perhaps he could have influenced Mary in some way when she ascended-and there would have been no burnings. And perhaps they would have been happy together. Philip himself never married-and like Mary he never had children. They both had rather bittersweet lives-and sad endings.
Well, you're right, It's a sad story. But that's life. And yes, Philip of Spain never loved Mary, but I think it was not easy for Philip of Spain to, because he had to married her. And she was the cousin of his father Charles V. And who wants to marry the cousin of his father?
On the other way, perhaps she will never send so many people to death when she had feel true love in later years? Who knows?
It is true I never looked at it from Philip of Spain's point of view. It could not have been easy to marry out of duty an older cousin one had never even met. Not that older woman/younger man relationships don't work out-but it is clear they had nothing in common and Mary was probably just infatuated rather than truly being in love-at her advanced age she hardly had any experience in that department.
