I am so glad that someone finally portrayed Princess Mary as such a lovely young woman. So often she is portrayed so harshly, whereas all contemporary accounts of her was that she was a beautiful child and a beautiful young woman. Philip tried so hard to win her hand, even after he was sent away, he still continued to petition Henry to come to England, continued to hope to marry her. Proof of Philip's love for Mary? He never married.

I also agree with you on people portraying Princess Mary so harshly. She was having problems too, you know whereas her father falling in love with another woman. I really do wish they could've married. Ah, alas, that was many, many years ago.

Mary was starving for love; she'd been separated from her mother for three years when Queen Katherine died, the father that had adored her had cast her aside for years until Jane Seymour became Queen. Princess Mary had been reduced to the status of bastard & now titled "the Lady Mary." She might still have been in the "falling in love" stages when Duke Philip was sent away, but I do believe she was quite devastated when he left.

Mary was also a beautiful redhead like her Mother Catherine of Aragon, many adaptations are inaccurate. Many think that because they were spaniards that they had black hair, but they weren't. They were of fair skin and red hair like Elizabeth and Henry. Evidence and history state this as well as the paintings.

Look at paintings of the Trastamaran dynasty/Catherine of Aragon's ancestors.

Many people don't know this but Mary was actually a redhead like her Mother Catherine of Aragon, Mary's grandmother Isabelle of Spain was actually a redhead as well. Look at the paintings of Catherine, Isabelle, & Mary and you will see. Mary and Catherine weren't brunette's like they showed on The Tudors. Henry VIII was also a redhead, which is where Elizabeth got her red hair from, Edward the VI was also redhead it's a trait from the Tudor line as well as in Catherine of Aragon's line.

Mary got married with Philip who didn't love her and she had no children. Elizabeth was sexually assaulted by Thomas Seymour and never got married. Yeah, Sarah Bolger is very beautiful. But there is a strange mistake. Duke Philip of Bavaria never existed. There was only a Philip William of Bavaria who was Bishop of Regensburg and later cardinal. But he was born 18 years after Mary had died. So this relationship is a total fiction. She had only one man in her life, Philip II. King of Spain. He was her one and only love.

Well ok, I know whats wrong. He really existed but he was not duke of Bavaria. He was count of Palatine and Duke of northern Palatinate-Neuburg. His brother was the duke of southern Palatinate-Neuburg. That's why I didn't found him first. But there is no evidence that he ever was in England.

No-he did exist. His brother even wrote a bio on him which is what biographers largely drew from whenever he is mentioned in Mary bios. Philip was 13 years older than Mary and did indeed travel to England-there is info on him on the Tudor Wiki fansite and portraits him as well. One from his youth, the other around the time he met Mary I-his betrothed.

As I told to MelindaPendulum I searched in the wrong way. Yes, he really existed, but he was not Duke of Bavaria, he was Duke of Palatinate-Neuburg. Finally, I found an article about him from 1888, mentioned in the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie, this was the first and only subject I found that confirmed he was in England and the lover of Mary and they were engaged.

But there was no marriage because his older brother Otto Henry, the elector of Palatinate, didn't except it because Mary had the status of an illegitimate daughter to the king of England still in the 1540s. It seemed that Philip had no problems with that, but it was not acceptable for his older brother, and by the way, Philip was insolvent, so he needed money. Because of Marys status, she were not allowed to draw the widow's pension. This was maybe a reason for the annulment of the engagement.

It is true I never looked at it from Philip of Spain's point of view. It could not have been easy to marry out of duty an older cousin one had never even met. Not that older woman/younger man relationships don't work out-but it is clear they had nothing in common and Mary was probably just infatuated rather than truly being in love-at her advanced age she hardly had any experience in that department.
