I used to like Punk A LOT. He was what I loved about wrestling. But as soon as the best in the world gimmick started he lost me. His shoot promo was great, but he is stale, and overrates himself. I know you have to evolve and reinvent yourself like Jericho does. But he stole Jericho's gimmick, does the same thing every week, and just doesn't seem to respect the true legend, the rock. I miss CM Punk's long hair, straight edge gimmick(cuz I'm straightedge and I relate), and his great matches.

Still, having his father's backing was a HUGE advantage for him and helps explain why he got as far as he did as fast as he did. I did hear about HBK helping Punk once but I've also heard about HHH holding Punk back a number of times (e.g, after Survivor Series 2006, where he felt Punk got a bigger pop than DX).

They're basically the same as they are now - references to asses, pie, and "it doesn't matter." It was popular at that time. Now, I find it corny like Punk does. I think Punk's character is far more intelligent, articulate, and versatile than The Rock's.

CM Punk can only do promos one way? He has had at least three distinct, highly entertaining gimmicks with corresponding promo styles: Straight Edge underdog (2006-2009), Straight Edge Messiah (2009-2010), and The Best in the World (2011-present).

The rock didn't play politics to get to the top in the wwf like certain wrestlers he paid his dues in the business and when the wwe were building new stars he put them over and focused on his hollywood career after vince allowed his contract to expire in 04.

@marie90 I think politics had plenty to do with Rock's rise to the top. He had his family usher him in after he was cut from pro football. Punk worked his way up himself. Apparently, you didn't read my previous post very well. I outlined a number of things Punk could rip into Rock for (and actually has). As far as Rock ripping into Punk, I'm really not sure what he could say. Maybe he could call him a whiner, but Punk has put up with a lot of crap from WWE to justify his "whining."

@Galen052 the rock having his father help him get in get in the wwf is the only thing that the rock has for politics, and that isn't really that much of a deal anyways because he did want to be a wrestler but his (father didn't want him to be one because of the discrimination he faced as a wrestler during his times) the rock didn't play politcs like the kliq or hogans group and he damn sure didn't have an easy sailing time getting over when he started for the wwf.

@marie90 I wasn't suggesting that Rock didn't work hard and face obstacles to succeed. Rock's politics are nothing compared to the Kliq's or Hogan's. Still, having his father's backing was a HUGE advantage for him and helps explain why he got as far as he did as fast as he did. I did hear about HBK helping Punk once but I've also heard about HHH holding Punk back a number of times (e.g, after Survivor Series 2006, where he felt Punk got a bigger pop than DX).

@Galen052 Still, I am totally perplexed as to why people like Rock more than Punk. I looked back at some of Rock's promos during 1999-2001 where he would rip into opponents. They're basically the same as they are now - references to asses, pie, and "it doesn't matter." It was popular at that time. Now, I find it corny like Punk does. I think Punk's character is far more intelligent, articulate, and versatile than The Rock's.

@marie90 Yes, Punk breaks the 4th wall to make points, but I appreciate the fact that he respects fans' intelligence enough to acknowledge what many of them are already thinking. I really cannot recall any Rock promos aside from trite catchphrases and juvenile humor, with the occasional very good serious promo. Even Cena pointed out how lame it is to speak in a high pitched voice and make fun of the way someone dresses. I see that at the middle school where I work.

@Galen052 Like I said the rock had many ways of doing promos cm punk can only do promo's in one way and one way only, the rock didn't always talk in a high pitch voice to get his point across specifically the rock from 1998-1999 was a mellow and laid back bully that insulted whoever was in the same general area as him no matter if you were just trying to get a simple interview with him.

CM Punk can only do promos one way? He has had at least three distinct, highly entertaining gimmicks with corresponding promo styles: Straight Edge underdog (2006-2009), Straight Edge Messiah (2009-2010), and The Best in the World (2011-present).

@Galen052 Rock only had the title as a heel in 98 AND 99, he lost so many matches and put so many ppl over unlike every other big name. He didnt get nearly as much of a push as Austin and still was huge hence why they named SMACKDOWN after him. Rock along with Taker are the only big names back then who dont have horrible reps and refused to put ppl over.

@kinglbkiv I'm not sure exactly what you're trying to say, but yes he did put a lot of ppl over. Punk has done jobs too - Orton and Mysterio come to mind. As far as Rock not getting nearly as much of a push, I'm not sure about that. He was THE man from late 99 to late 00 when Austin was out, and even afterwards, he shared the spotlight with him for a few years. Austin was the man from 1998 thru Survivor Series 1999. Austin only got somewhat more of a push.

Of course, Austin got more of a push than Rock, but I stand by my claim that it was only somewhat more of one. Again, look at the time frame that each was THE man. Also, Austin had to win the title in 01 because Rock was going away to make movies. Quite honestly, I'm not even sure what point you're trying to make by saying Austin got more of a push.

@kinglbkiv Also, yes Austin was unprofessional back in 2002. He shouldn't have just left. If you get both sides of the story, though, Austin didn't leave just because he didn't want to job. He left because he was having serious neck issues and didn't feel that putting his health on the line was going to benefit anyone. He would have been more open to jobbing to guys like Lesnar if the jobs were given proper build. In addition, he came back to job to Rock at WM 19.

I don't agree that HHH wasn't big then. He was the top heel, getting MASSIVE heat. Just because he wasn't at Rock's level doesn't mean he wasn't huge. Personally, I think Austin got more of a push simply because he was more interesting and profitable.

Austin is a joke, he was only over bc of his feud with Vince just exactly how NWO was so big, neither would be shit w/o that storyline. His feud with Vince lasted so long because it was the most profitable in wrestling history, plain and simple. He also had memorable feuds with Rock, HHH, and Angle.
HHH was a joke? How in the world is being the top heel a joke? I agree he was jealous of Rock and Austin, but that does nothing to diminish his success.
