Viacom ignores the "free" aspect because they want to make money. But they used YT to promote their business and rather than pay for this marketing, they sued YT for permitting it.
Both corporations are hypocrites; but Viacom is the larger anus.
Why is Viacom engaging in these activities? Publicity. Win a lawsuit, lose a lawsuit...either way they're in the news. "There's no such thing as bad press..."

By uploading their own videos to Youtube they were able to increase the popularity of their shows. It is very similar to how the music industry used Napster, Limewire, and such things. Then they are able to take legal action which stirs up all sorts of controversy, which leads to publicity, which is MORE FREE ADVERTISING.
Go figure, companies spend millions on advertising...
What I find interesting is how quick YT is with the hook when some creoturd illegitimately whines about copyright infringement, yet drag their feet for days and days with other copyright challenges. Viacon's douchebaggery aside, YT is very inconsistent about how they manage copyright issues.

@Thunderf00t Yeah, it's pretty obvious Viacom isn't really interested in preserving copyrights on YouTube. Most episode clips from South Park have been removed, and yet misleading videos featuring the song and "likeness" (but not the actual episode video) of say, Mr Hanky the Christmas Poo are still found in abundance on YouTube, as if there is no copyright on the music or still images. Pretty lame, Viacom. Pretty lame.
The reason Viacom pursued this lawsuit was to use it as a bargaining chip against YouTube in some negotiations that are currently going on between content "creators" and YouTube.
While their case was rather laughable in light of the documents that got released, the strategy was not a bad one over all.
The minute you start to think that there must be enough smart people within these companies to keep them from doing truly stupid stuff .....just look around you at the crazy shit that happens on a daily basis from companies, governments and groups that should know better ........common sense, ....... truly isn't all that common

..........which is something I've been saying for the longest, which again, is people posting your material actually helps the owners of that material instead of hurting them. Again, pirating is when you make money off of it, which again, is a different story. Many sites will allow members to post other peoples photos or videos, as long as you credit the proper owners of the material. Viacom, Warner, and napster are a bunch of anal whiney babies who just don't or want to get it.
Theft is different than violating copyrights, because theft is when somebody makes money off of it/pirating, but vioilation of copyright is really nomore than let's say j walking, because a person might not have written permission to use the material, but they aren't really doing anybody harm or capitalizing off of it. So yeah, in a way violation of copyright is really something minor, and it actually boost the materials popularity, kind of like free adverstisement............
copyright law was a pretty good way for songwriters to make money and the basis of movie and music business. but it's mostly based on the player piano. at least in the states. well the DMCA was a nice try, but for the most part copyright is dead. our computers are basically really great copy machines for music, video, etc... the days of owning intellectual property is over, everybody needs to get used to it.

Most episode clips from South Park have been removed, and yet misleading videos featuring the song and "likeness" (but not the actual episode video) of say, Mr Hanky the Christmas Poo are still found in abundance on YouTube, as if there is no copyright on the music or still images. Pretty lame, Viacom. Pretty lame.

The reason Viacom pursued this lawsuit was to use it as a bargaining chip against YouTube in some negotiations that are currently going on between content "creators" and YouTube.
While their case was rather laughable in light of the documents that got released, the strategy was not a bad one over all.

Theft is different than violating copyrights, because theft is when somebody makes money off of it/pirating, but vioilation of copyright is really nomore than let's say j walking, because a person might not have written permission to use the material, but they aren't really doing anybody harm or capitalizing off of it. copyright law was a pretty good way for songwriters to make money and the basis of movie and music business. but it's mostly based on the player piano. at least in the states. well the DMCA was a nice try, but for the most part copyright is dead. our computers are basically really great copy machines for music, video, etc... the days of owning intellectual property is over, everybody needs to get used to it.
