Fantastic movie. It's VERY thought provoking. A lot of Irish people are surprisingly ignorant to what is happening in the world. I think that sometimes we are parranoid that foreigners are trying to pull the wool over our eyes, or get one over us (maybe it's a vestigial characteristic of being oppressed in our history by a colonial power). But we shouldnt judge others by our own infamous standards.

In 1976 I lived as an illegal immigrant in New York. I lived on 139th and Fordham and passed through 125th every night on my way home from my 'illegal' work as a barman. I know too well of the dangers there and in the 70's it was a lot worse, but I also knew many decent people, far in the majority in my mind. I was there for the same reasons economic refugees come here, a crap and corrupt economy at home and a chance to better my fortune and future. Kind of familiar sounding isn't it?

I refer you to my earlier debate with Polska over this issue. The Irish Govt gives 19 euro in total to Asylum seekers and refugees. Nothing else! Do you seriously think a Government that wont look after its own citizens in health, education and transport areas, would give money, cars, and phones to asylum seekers! If this is the nub of your argument then you are arguing against something that isn't there. Don't take my word for it. Ask them yourself. Ring your local politician ask him/her.

Your facts about asylum seekers benefits are correct.But when they are accepted they become refugees!They get the same benefits as any irish citizen,so the facts get destorted,I think them blackies landing here getting cars etc came from a tabloid rag messing around with the facts when a refugee set up a small company and got a gov grant for a car,the tabloid in question played with facts and then it "became fact" in some circles that "they ALL be getting cars and shhhhhhhhhhhhhit for free man"

I think you will find BBC's current 'White Britain' series kind of negates this argument. As for my own films all are self funded with no grants or aid from the state. If you do feel you, and others, have something to say on this issue I'd gladly make a film of that too.

Why assume I am Catholic? Religion has nothing to do with nationality. As to Adam and Eve I think you will find even the church accepts they were not the first. As to the colour of the first peoples skin it really doesn't matter, from them came all the races of man, i.e. we are all from the same ancestor (and I wont even mention the apes) and if the Garden of Eden is in Iraq then let's hope it's not in the Green Zone as it is probably lying under a McDonalds franchise by now!

So the fact that someone has good land and cant defend it is good enough reason to throw them off it and take it for yourself? The divide between Catholic and Protestant was well embedded long before the treaty which legitimized by force the division of the Nation of Ireland. The reason three counties were left to the south was because the Northern Unionists feared a large number of Catholics would dilute their culture, which brings us neatly right back to the asylum immigration debate of today.

Firstly thee was no N.I in the time of the famine. Secondly, during the Elizabethan plantation of Ireland (where the natives were ethnically cleansed off their land by Cromwell) the north of the country was the first and most heavily planted area. This meant that traditionally that region had a very strong protestant/planter population which was much wealthier (owning the land)than their dispossessed Catholic counterparts. This became the modern divide between north and south. And I'm Irish.

In 1847 most Irish were poor. They were poor because they did not own their own land and lived under a feudal system of Landlord/Tenant where the imperial conquerors (the English) were landlords and the indigenous Irish were tenants on their own land. You are correct there was plenty of food. The English just chose to hoard it and refused to give it away for free despite seeing people die by the thousands in front of their imperially clouded eyes. Don't understand the N.I.reference I'm afraid.

first ,its a well made show.however,the ireland you know will be drastically changed.you will lose your culture and traditions etc.now with over 400000 non irish in ireland,do the math.what will it look like in 50 years,these are economic seekers.where were these people in the 1980s and 1990s,when the celtic tiger did not exist.when the irish went to the u.s. there was no benefits given to the irish.cant wait to see what happens when your economy goes down.

Thank you. It's not often you see someone who though disagreeing with the film, still recognises its merit as a film. I salute you for that. I also understand the feeling of cultural swamping. It's a valid reason for concern but as history has proven, if a culture feels under threat it actually excels and flourishes. We Irish are the custodians of our own culture. This does not mean we should be closed to other cultures or others to ours. The Irish in US were favoured with Morrison visas etc.

Probably the same people who let the Irish, Polish, Russians etc and many other nationalities into America. For your information they are refereed to as guests because they are not allowed to work while seeking asylum and are given 15 euro a week to survive. Hope that clears things up for you. I agree most are economic refugees. Just like the hundreds of thousands of Irish that fled to Europe and America during the last 100 years up to very recently. Rem the Morrison visa appeal to legitimize them and the current campaign to legalize the thousands of our countrymen in US? Perhaps like many of our Celtic tiger cubs you have forgotten that. Getting Biffo to stand down in favour of an asylum seeker might not be a bad idea. Perhaps someone less fortunate than Biffo might spare a thought for the hundreds of our citizens who have to suffer or even die on hospital trolleys in cold corridors for lack of funding. You could be on to something there.

Actually for your information the Native Americans were one of the few peoples who sent a large sum of money to Ireland during the famine which saw one million of our people die of starvation due to inaction and hoarding of food by our white neighbours the British in 1847.

Precisely! Which is why this film addresses the push factors in the asylum seeker and economic refugee issues. Instead of whining about the numbers coming to our shores perhaps we would be better served if we tried to bring about reform in both world trade rules and in the UN and begin to rebuild and strengthen both the economic and democratic structures in these countries, structures needed to sustain a fair and just society.

I dont know the exact numbers spent in asylum cases,but I would hazzard a guess that it could be better spent?Of course we should over the 3rd world a better deal,next time you bring the missus out for a night out think of how much it could do in these places!Slap up meal,cinema,few round of beves,club entrance fee,and then the taxi home!We owe africa nothing but a moral obligation to help not a political obligation.Ministers use these people as a political football,its not right.

Actually we Europeans owe the Africans a huge debt. We owe them for the billions of dollars of natural resources we stole from them during our imperial rampages through their countries. We owe them their lives for trading them as slaves to America and other countries, we owe them our existence as we are descended from them. It was in Africa where the first bipedal human walked on Earth. But most of all we owe them because the sustainability of our humanity and our future, depends on it.

Fantastic movie. It's VERY thought provoking. A lot of Irish people are surprisingly ignorant to what is happening in the world. I think that sometimes we are parranoid that foreigners are trying to pull the wool over our eyes, or get one over us (maybe it's a vestigial characteristic of being oppressed in our history by a colonial power). But we shouldnt judge others by our own infamous standards.
