  • This is my favorite song done by The Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem. I have most of their

vinyl albums & was lucky enough to see them live in NYC. They are the best of folk Irish singers ever. Unfortunately none of them are with us any more.

  • Anyone else know of this song from the book "Patriot Games," coincidentally by another Clancy?

  • I grew up singing this song for my da, (just the verses the boys sang), never failed to bring a tear to his eye. Aonach leaids spraoi againn chailleann tú

  • I wished he was around to explain why he and the Clancy brothers failed to sing the whole song. Why they feared singing the truth about Éamon de Valera? Even when Behan called them on destroying his song.

  • I wished he was around to explain why he and the Clancy brothers failed to sing the whole song. Why they feared singing the truth about Éamon de Valera? Even when Behan called them on destroying his song.

  • @nyli88guy what the story behind this?about destroying the song? is there a verse missing?

  • @keepitacrime Well the verse is not missing, Clancy left it out on purpose. The verse is about how Eamon de Valera betrayed and sold out his fellow Irish men for his own gain. Dominic Behan wrote the song, i recomend listening to his. The song is not about killing English, but rather how those who use the Patriot feeling to gain for themselves. Behan even called out Clancy on it.

  • @nyli88guy Does Liam Clancy believe that fact to be not true? or does he feel its too risky a verse to add in the recording? or what?

  • I still like Kathleen Largelys version better. I have fallen in love with that voice!

  • the voice says it all...one of the best

  • beautiful ' it is a shame it has taken years to see the true song '

  • RIP, Liam Clancy. Hopefully, you and Tommy Makem are playing rebel songs again somewhere in Tir Na Nog. Saoirse!

  • wonderfull

  • Bob Dylan took this melody ,changed the words , and made "With God on Our Side" with it !

  • @kalalot And refused to give credit to this song, yes I read about it. What can we do about it though?

  • @kalalot He sure did...also the idea/structure pretty much. Also based The Times they are a Changin' on Arthur McBride.

  • @Wolfswren You should be ashamed to even mention your heritage you stupid idiot....man its just as well that your forefathers left Cobh....we had too many of their type of quislings here for too long

  • I really don't know how you could dislike this song and man.

  • This was one of late father's favorite songs I'm not particularly republican but this song sends a shiver up my spine that I find hard to explain. The Clancys and Tommy Makem were some of the great patrons of Irish music, long may their memory last

  • i saw liam and his brothers and tommy makem about 25times and eventually became good friends especially liam and visited him in ireland on many occasions. his death hurt almost as much as a member of my family. rest well liam and the rest and we will see you "upstairs" soon enough

  • Our day will come!

  • I dont think you understand the subtlety of what Liam is trying to say with this song.

  • song bout an irish patriot very inspirational

  • fuck off british, go and fuck the queen, and give the north back! why do you watch Irish videos then?

  • Some people forget YouTube is a place to air opinions. Does seem the Clancy Brothers played up the Irish thing for Americans. At the same time, Liam could sure make you feel something when he sang. And as a group, they were, as Dylan says, "exhuberant."

  • Liam Clancy was there for me when my father passed. And I offered him nothing. Not a cent. Not a story. But he was there for me, more than anyone, even in my own family.

He will always be my favorite. I cannot wait to meet him in the after.

I'll hug that man... I'll hug him along with my father.

He is the best ever. And if your opinion is different, you might think about storing it deep in your anus. As a thought. Or maybe on the page of your favorite singer.

    Liam is the best.

  • Fair enough, maybe sellout is a bit strong, but there was always a cliched element to them for me. Father owns an insurance company, they head over to the states to act on broadway, got famous for "their" songs and made fortunes selling an Irish steriotype, BUT they defo covered some great trad music very well at the same time. Liam is no Luke imo, whose love and passion for what he did was uncompromising, but that's not to say he isn't a legend in his own right :)

  • Wouldn't go as far as calling them sell outs now...they were great folk singer and were very good at what they did, makes you proud to be Irish! The only sell outs in Ireland are those who sit in Dáil Éireann....Ireland 32 never 26....!

  • Only 3 stars because he left out the most controversial verses. The Dubliners for example would never do this. This is not surprising of the Clanceys. As much as I like them, they were always sell outs. They were more interested in selling records to Americans than anything else. The sight of the 4 aging little Paddies in their Aran sweaters and caps literally skipping off the stage always makes me cringe. Very good at what they did, but a little more dignity wouldn't hurt :)

  • I can't stop listening to this today. I hate the lyrics. I hate that crap. But his interpretation is f@cking brilliant.

  • Another "theft," and it isn't really. Dylan and Clancy were friends, ever hear Dylan sing "Two Soldiers?"

  • Sounds to me like an anti-war song. Nothing to gain and much to lose. No?

  • @brelfan Who ever wanted to be involved in war,not many ordinarys i would think, its an irish song of old, open your ears deaf lad. its anything but anti-war,listen to the last verse deaf lugs.

  • @sillyhorse86 Oh, you called ME deaf. And a "lad." Thought you were saying the song is about a "deaf lad." Seemed so silly, sillyhorse, I didn't know how to respond. I think it's an anti-war song. At least this verion, in which some of the IRA rhetoric is cut. "List while I sing, the love of a country is a terrible thing." The protagonist is full of ideals and killed before he shoots anyone. I'm sure it's a matter of opinion. But I'm not deaf. And last I checked, I had female body parts.

  • @brelfan ,deaflugs listen to the last verse, its a republican song. sounds to me like a song written by someone who was dragged into war.

  • i agree with frankieireland these are very similar lyrics to those of the irish ramblers on an ancient vinyl.y

  • @MrSwandis "The Fifties Campaign".... which was more to do with Nationalism and the border rather than creating the a true Republican view of a "United Ireland" "Uniting Protestant Catholic and Dissenter" in common cause." be they Nationalist Or Unionist "Carpetbagger" Republicans changed their Tack in the Sixties Looking for Reform with outhers but "Northern Ireland" was an Unreformable Unionist Monotith and imploded into a "Default mode" state repression! against the minority community

  • You know what's funny. I went on a major bender for a few days and started listening to a lot of music through utube. It seems I found it necssary to comment on many of the songs. I received numerous replies rebuking me for the things I said and, after reading my original posts, have come to realise just how ridiculous, uniformed and/or irrational much of it was. The hangover was bad enough, the continued reminder of what an idiot I was has become a nightmare. So remember to drink responsibly

  • One of the most moving and profound versions of any song ever recorded--this was Liam at his mightiest; I believe it comes from the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem album Live at Carnegie Hall.

  • two extra verses:

They told me how Connolly was shot in his chair,

His wounds from the fighting all bloody and bare.

His fine body twisted, all battered and lame

They soon made me part of the patriot game.

To play out my part in the patriot game.

I don't mind a bit if I shoot down police

They are lackeys for war never guardians of peace

And yet at deserters I'm never let aim

The rebels who sold out the patriot game

  • @Frankieireland

This is bullshit!! you've mixed your own crap into the middle of a great song. You ignorant bastard!

  • Hi, no these verses were in the original version actually. I certainly didn't write them!! You'd better write another angry youtube comment and send it to dominic behan.... at least you realise this is a great song.

  • Comment removed

  • My favorite Clancy song. Shame I never saw this man in concert. Unlike most performers and stars these days, theres not a bad word to say about this guy.

Anyone know if he played this song often in concert?

  • Simply magnificent.

  • You'll be missed. Thanks for all.

  • Definitely the best version of this song, R.I.P Liam.

  • never knew him, never heard of him, but his death has awakened a love of his music. ...

  • This is a great song about a great patriot by a wonderful singer...to keep the words in context of recent history some years ago when working in the ballad business I added a verse which I quote.....

Now Fergal O Hanlon from this life is gone,

We honour his memory in story & song,

But the best way of all to honour his name,

Is to play your own part in the Patriot Game

  • @muintir A wonderful tribute to Liam Clancy and Fergal O'Hanlon.....

  • well said, erin gaugh brae

  • @muintir nice verse... I'll write that down and sing it at the sessiun next Friday!

  • @muintir

    Well done !

  • @muintir

"while working in the ballad business i added a verse"

i truly feel sorry for your soul, and ill pray for you.

  • @WelcomeToDetroitWimp Thanks for the prayers but...I dont need them you bollix!

  • @muintir

you are evil and selfish and i hope to god you are not irish for our people face enough strife without your corruption. i will pray for your tarnished worthless soul whether you like it or not.

  • @WelcomeToDetroitWimp Republican, Irish and proud...now....subject closed!!!!!!

  • Slán Liam.

     R.I.P

  • RIP mo chara , Go raibh mile a maith agat

  • RIP Liam Clancy & THANK YOU for impacting my life with your songs! Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there... I do not sleep. I am the thousand winds that blow... I am the diamond glints on snow... I am the sunlight on ripened grain... I am the gentle autumn rain. When you waken in the morning's hush, I am the swift uplifting rush Of gentle birds in circling flight... I am the soft star that shines at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry— I am not there... I did not die...
  • R.I.P. Mr.Clancy-an IRISHMAN if there ever was one.

  • It doesn't matter what your politics are; this is a beautiful song performed beautifully.

Rest in peace, Liam, from an Anglo-Scottish WASP.

  • Nice comment Eagleray...I agree with you its a beautiful regardless of politics. All true balladeers feel the same way.

  • well said.

  • Slán agus beannacht leat. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam

    You'll be missed Liam

  • Can you translate those words. Thanks

  • Goodbye and blessings on you. May he rest in peace

  • I've heard that he past away yesterday. A local radio station in New York WBAI (Radio Free Eireann) always plays this song. Very nice song.

  • rust zacht Liam

  • A great an is with God. May the wind always be at his back.

  • rest in peace Liam

  • May the Lord have mercy on his soul. Definetely an under apreciated artist in Ireland. As a young man of 32 i began listening to Liams music at my late teens. His collection of songs was an insight into our history and a great folk revival and archieviest. May he rest in peace. bte i wud nt even dignify a comment like the 3rd one before mine.

  • Rest in Peace Liam

    04/12/2009

  • always remembered,the patiot game

  • you can talk here or send your address

  • Fuck you peter1886, may god have mercy on your soul you spineless bastard.

    RIP Liam Clancy

For the love of one's country is a beautiful thing

  • Your command of English is wonderous, your are a seriously sad individual . May Liam have a great time with all muscians of all faiths and creeds. Up the muscians forever

  • Fianna Fàil the bastards ,Ireland is a failed state because of you

  • Air dheis De go raibh a anam dhilis.

  • Im speechless, Ireland has lost yet another legend

  • If there is a god, he will be waiting at the gates with Guitar in hand.

  • Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.

  • 1 OF THE BEST RIP LIAM

  • R.I.P Liam

  • Liam, Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam, God bless you man....RIP.

  • no one can touch liam on this one. sweet and sorrowful. one of my favourite ballads. go raibh maith agut liam.

  • I agree :D

  • Anyone, who wrote, " a rare time for death in Ireland? " Was it James Joyce or Sean O'Casey?

  • The melody is a Dominic Behan 's work ? Some people said a Bob Dylan .

What you mean about that ?

  • its said that bob dylan took the melody for "with god on our side" from this song that he heard performed either by liam clancy or another performing singer,

and as lauded dylan is for his exquised song writing, its evident that hes borrowed many other melodies from different folk songs,

dont get me wrong im a huge dylan fan,

its just interesting to see the similarities

  • Dylan used to hang out with the Clancy Brothers in NYC back in the early 60s. He was definitely heavily influenced by Irish folk music (and several of his songs are Irish folk melodies with his own words). There'sa great documentary about Dylan where Liam Clancy is interviewed and discusses their association in the 60s.

  • several??? wow, i didnt actually know there was that many ,

have you any idea what other melodies appart from this one he has borrowed?

  • I'm no Dylan expert, but one other example is "Ramblin' Gamblin' Willie", which is to the tune of "Brennan on the Moor".

  • @colm144 I just youtubed a comment from Dylan on Liam Clancy. He admitted he was trying to immitate him. I think you can hear it when Dylan sings a folk song, come to think of it. It's that cut away from BS in a song. Away from show-boating and silliness and trills or whatever the nonesense of the day is... sudden rush of honesty.

  • love this song, there will always be traitors in ireland..... we could of had a 32 county republic along time ago, however it bes prosponed by informers and sell outs.... we'll be waiting a long time yet, not in my lifetime any way

  • no truer words spoke but i do hope you see it as do i

  • Why? It's religion. There is no compromise in a religious war. Irish History speaks of it often.

  • O Ireland,, I cry for you. Make the peace last. I LOVE you so,, no more Patriots Games. They get rich and WE DIE!

    I love you all soooooooo.

    Make the peace last!

    Make the peace last!

    All the best,, Knute

  • Lovely song, and compelling tune.

    Norfolk

    UK

  • no 1

  • The missing verse...

    This Ireland of ours has too long been half free;

Six counties lie under John Bull's tyranny.

But still De Valera is greatly to blame,

For shirking his part in the Patriot game.

  • I heard another verse:

I dont mind a bit if I shoot down police

theyre lackeys for war, never guardians of peace

I wish that my rifle had given the same

to those traitors who sold out the patriot game.

    what stinging lyrics.

  • bob dylan stole the tune for this for his song with god on our side.

  • He didn't steal anything. This song uses the tune of a traditional Irish song.

  • you know what i mean...borrowed, used...stop being a goon.

  • I disagree: Dylan obviously "borrowed" a bit from the lyrics as well.

    Compare:

    My name it is nothing

    My age it means less....

    With:

    My name is O'Hanlon

    And I've just gained sixteen....

  • Dylan is quoted as saying at Newport 1963 ,"Yeah. You know, Jean Redpath sang a song here awhile ago which I heard Liam Clancy sing about two years ago and I was listening to her sing it and I thought that I never, uh, I thought I wrote this song called With God On Your Side. And it must have somewhere stayed in the back of my mind hearing Liam Clancy singing The Patriot Game." Behan who wrote the song called him a thief and a plagarist. All can be found on wikipedia and the actual rec on utube

  • Sorry, this comment was supposed to go in the peacefrog1916 branch of this thread.

  • which Behan? mo cara

  • Dominic

  • this song makes me cry, I wish young people wouldnt get themselves killed/maimed/damaged fighting. Lovely voice, sad lyrics.

  • I love this song reminds me so much of my late Dad

  • LOVE IT!

  • Then why did you watch it you retard?

  • Oxy Moron

  • "Believe that we too love freedom and desire it. To us it is more desirable than anything in the world. If you strike us down now, we shall rise again and renew the fight. You cannot conquer Ireland you cannot extinguish the Irish passion for freedom: if our deed has not been sufficient to win freedom then our children will win it with a better deed."(pearse)

  • Almost as beautiful as Luke Kelly's version.

Ooh Aah Up The MARXIST Ra

  • Best version ever of this great worded song, the passion comes through in Liam's voice and tells you what an Irish gentleman he is.

  • Good, but he left out a verse about De Valera shirking his role in the Patriot Game.

  • Beautiful. x

  • A beautiful song and a great artist... The text is really forever...

Many thannks for posting and greetings from berlin :)

  • what a singer

  • classic
