I was in the cargo bay of one that landed like that, it was scary as fuck because I couldn't see anything at all and it felt like we were going to crash!
i have been on quite a few assault landing strips in the C130....generally they are 3000 to 3500 feet .....mostly 3000 i believe. You gotta have it right and touch down as early as you can and generally below a certain weight.
I am not a pilot, so I'm sure others would be able to answer this correctly. My understanding is that propellar and jet aircraft have different approach speeds and landing glide slopes. I've never seen a C-5 etc do such a landing, so perhaps it is outside the capabilities for such a large aircraft?
@JustifyJustin the propellers on the c-130 are like a big parachute. when they're not making power they're just big blades sticking out into the air and actually slow the airplane down. airplanes like the c-5 or c-17 don't have propellers so they can't do the same maneuvers.
@JustifyJustin c-17 c-5 do assault landings but not as badass c-5s and c-17s stay nose up but still drop fast ive been in a c-130 for combat landing and takeoff wild fuckin ride lol c-5s and c-17 corkscrew for hostile approaches more than anything though
@piloty5 lol thats what i said did u even read what i wrote they stay nose up but drop alt fast they dont take a normal approach like lining up 10 out with a glide slope they corkscrew down and drop alt fast on approach sorry if u misunderstood
On that note, I do know the cargo planes tend to have very high take off angles in combat zones, for similar reasons... although it doesn't help much against stingers etc.
okay, know that, all I'm asking is, are those other military cargo plane like c 5, an 22 an 124, c 17 and ... are able or meant to execute steap landing maneuver??
Like I said, I'm no expert on that. I'd say they could probably do it, but not within their design envelope. Sorta like can you roll a 747... probably, but the outcome would be rather unpleasant most of the time.
@JustifyJustin There NGC documentory on the C-5 Transporting Tanks to Irac, when arriving in baghdad they also do a tactical landing but not as spectacular as the c-130 ...
@xosrov2 They can(C-5, C-17)execute a combat approach as shown in this video, and they are designed for it. P-3's do it as well. The cool thing is to watch a C-5 do it with NVG, and the airport lights turned off. That's a freaking trip to see.
@xosrov2 Yes, Specifically the C-17 was designed to make an approach such as this. The wheel systems have compressible springs that allow for the plane to do an attack landing. In the field, these planes only need a 1 square mile patch of clear land to put the bird down. Its amazing!
@xosrov2 C-17 and C-5's have similar landing approaches for combat zones. The wide one is watching a C-5 do it with NVGs no lights on the aircraft, no lights on the airfield, and watching that big ass aircraft nose dive into it's combat landing. I'm sure AN-124s, AN22s do as well. Just never seen them first hand, as I have with C-17s and C-5s.
i always hated doing that!

Im pretty sure the C130 is immune from the laws of physics.

all military planes are designed to perform quite differently than any commercial plane, even cargo planes

whats the difference between assault landing and normal landing ? i cant see a difference
XINXAN7515 1 year ago
@XINXAN7515 the main difference is the vertical velocity. you can hit the ground harder if you're configured properly.

why they land like that?

When you're operating in hostile environments, to stay out of effective gunfire range as long as possible.
JustifyJustin 2 years ago 10
okay, tnx, so does C 17, C 5, An 124, An 22 and other military cargo planes do the same in order to stay away from enemy fire on landing???

@JustifyJustin...C5 no way, C17 maybe but prob not...and you are right about the speeds. They varie on aircraft and weights.
