You guys are sick but u should have more respect for the natural places that provide you the oppertunity to do this stuff. Dont trash it by throwing ur rubbish in it and spoiling it, ripping trees out is shit too.
Respect it bro!
otherwise, fucking rad video man, that shit is sick, How do you get the ropes across the canyon?
It's cool that you guys thought of the safety of others by removing the bolts....Did you take your trash with you? like your Redbull cans at the bottom of the canyon...LNT!
How did you attach the rope you were swinging on to the anchored ropes that stretched accross the canyon? did you just tie figure 8's on a bight in the middle of the rope or what?
Did you guys have to get a permit to drill in Moab? I understand the safety implications of needing bolts, but it seems like you're marring nature without a care.
Wicked awesome stuff, though. Mega props, I would have shit myself silly...
@jshglass You don't need a permit for BLM, I did end up getting a letter of permission though. We removed bolts after leaving. That aside, "marring" nature is not a primary concern when your life is on the line. Far worse things have occurred to Earth than a small bolt in a piece of rock and life goes on as usual. Thanks for the comment!
@norwejon I don't want you to think I was condemning you for drilling. I fully understand that a bolt is necessary over a tree/shrub or some other woody desert plant with a very shallow root system. I was just merely curious about what it took to drill into ancient rock.
Totally cool, though. I wish I had the nads to do it myself...
@norwejon Actually, marring nature should be a primary concern. The fact that everyone thinks that their fun tricks are more important than natural preservation is what lead to the whole clean climbing and leave no trace movements. You drill a couple bolt holes, some other guy drills a couple, and then the rock is scarred all over and those of us who spend time and money minimizing our impact using clean techniques are doing it for nothing. Your life was not on the line, you put it on the line.
@jonnyboithefish I'm over it, thanks for caring though. Funny how when you look at the history of climbing, many are hailed for creating aid routes up El Cap with hundreds of bolts.. Simply stop by your local outdoor sport area and take a look around at all the useless hardware, I suggest you start complaining there first if you truly care. As for climbing in itself, it is nothing more than a "trick" as well. You accomplish just as little going up a wall as you do going down. To each their own.
@norwejon Nothing wrong with going up or down, I was born to yo yo, Bolts are good, Can be removed and replaced, I am jealous of this experience, Id probably do a jump like that, but not before standing on the edge for 45 minutes pissing down my own leg, or someone else's leg just to assert a dominant control over the situation.
@jonnyboithefish When clean protection zippers out.... scary thing. I still enjoy a good quickdraw on a recently serviced bolt. Clean protection movements were really about keeping climbers from getting kicked out of national and state parks... lets face it, it works, but bolts will never die. If you are really concerned with nature, remember the microchips from the computer you're posting with, came from a huge mine, witch destroyed tons of rock. Your move captain planet.
Friggin awesome but why drill bolts when there's so much natural protection around? Kind of sacrilegious to bolt next to a crack in Moab, even if you do subsequently remove the bolt
@freshchemical The dynamic forces sustained during loading prevent you from just tying a rope
to anything nearby and hoping it works. Bolts are necessary to achieve the angles needed for the tyrolean to create the right swing through path.... Otherwise, you would end up as a splat as many have done in the past.
The planning and calculations that went into this must have been fun as hell to figure out! How come only 15 jumps though...if there was a backup system, why not push it. If the first system fails, the backup is there. And obviously you made a solid, bomb-proof primary set up, so the backup should be as good.
But hey, Im just sitting here in a comfy chair with a cold beer, not standing on a 500 ft high ledge.....
@Jorgenfork2 Thanks for the nice words! We only did 15 jumps since we were limited by time to set up, recovery between jumps and then time to tear down. The rig was fairly bomb proof but when we took it down we still found several areas that sustained high stress loads and were very close to breaking on the primary ropes/webbing. I enjoyed the sheep BASE movie, hehe
holy shit man id have to wear my favourite quality cotton undergarments just incase of splatterage do you wear your favourite undies when jumping man you would need a specialized compartment for them grapefruit sized lady chargers you crazy mutherfuckers unreal i digg it
The money invested was over years and About half went to cameras and a computer to edit the movie I made. Buying large quantities of rope was no small undertaking though and it took several iterations to arrive at this final system. There was a lot of design, travel and trials that were not put into the video. And yes, BASE jumping is easier and safer but not as rewarding for me personally.
seems pretty cool, but for ten g's????? For that amount you can take up skydiving for a couple of years and then get into base jumping. But, if you guys love this stuff...i'm happy for ya. If hippies complain about cans, just shoot them so they don't release any more methane in their next fart.
but seriously, how many of you would or do lose the rope from time to time? At what alt. from base does the rope let you fall? Just curious, looks interesting.
but seriously, how many of you would or do lose the rope from time to time? At what alt. from base does the rope let you fall? Just curious, looks interesting.

Hey man, I could use a bit of info myself if your dishing it out. It would be very much appreciated. I keeping my eye out for some likely locations, seen some nice bridges already. Any info you might have would be of great value.
the jist of my PM was, you cannot find info online & i will not give it out because if you need it then you clearly wouldn't know what to do with it.... if you really want to do it; spend years & years climbing, become a qual'd & highly experienced master rigger & IRATA tech, and do a whole lot of skydiving to properly learn body control in freefall
when you can design the system for yourself (without having to ask people on the internet) and KNOW through vast experience that it will work, thats when you might be ready to try it
I suppose that's fair comment. But I think I'll just go tie a rope or two to a bridge and jump of. Nothing massive like, just about 20 - 30 feet. I'm hardly a master rigger but I have been climbing a number of years so I guess I'll just take my chances.

'life is either an extreme adventure or nothing at all". Huh? You took a year of planning to figure out how to uproot bushes and throw cans down the canyon. Seems to me, with all the planning, that there is nothing 'extreme' about your video. I agree that a rope jump on that scale takes quite a bit of planning, engineering, etc, but please try next time to not come across as such a frat boy.
really nice ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡7 but what rig did you use to attach rope to harness ??? i m used to use my grigri but i think there is a complex and safer way to connect rope to the harness ????
Thanks! I used standard figure 8 knots through biners but attached them to several points all over the harness to distribute the intense g-forces across the body.
I assure you the impact that we left was very minimal, we even removed the few bolts we drilled :) And you are right, BASEing this site would probably be safer but definitely not as fun!
The point of rope jumping is not to be dangerous. The point is to jump off a cliff and live to tell about it. Dan Osman did some amazing things; however, he made a lot of mistakes; namely, using only a single tyrolean and knowingly crossing jump lines. Anyways, I think you missed the point of this video entirely.
I reply to this video with the one we made here in São Paulo, Brazil. Is not as good and professinal as you guys did. Many, many congratulations. Rope-jumper to rope-jumper.
damn.. intense.. lol i made a jump but it was like 40 mts tall.. lol... nice job guys.. very bad ass!! if you are planing to do something better.. you should pass the info.. so we can go see..
awsome shit mate. we are in the planing of a 1000m rope swing quest, how many G's would you expect to be pulling on a 1000m rope? by the way we have a way that its possible but dont want to give too much away at this stage. thanx mate, shane
Thanks a lot. The name of the song is the Ecstasy of Gold. The version in the video is a remix from a Nike Commerical done about a year ago. I think you can find it on youtube.
i have never seen anything like this in my life, and i dont think i will see anything of that scale ever again! truely awesome guys, you are both brave and crazy in equal measures. you have not only done the crazyest thing in the world, but you filmed it for the rest of the world to see! you guys are legends!
a perfect example of a well executed stunt. extreme adventures r not dangerous if u calculate the risks involved.. great job guys.. excelent planning n execution.
that is an absolutely amazing video, you guys have done something pretty dam special, not that you dont know that already though xD congrats! Can anyone tell me the name of the opera song at the start of that video? sounds like charlotte church or something?
thanks for the compliment! the name of the original song was the ecstasy of gold by ennio morricone; however, the version in the video was a remix of which i have no clue to the origin. I think it might have been used in a nike commercial? hope this helps
looked away at the last moment-almost had that can too-vid's amazing-I love doing this kinda stuff if I were to save 10grand by next year would you guys want to pitch in and go somewhere new and go even bigger?
Awesome work guys!! I'd like to hear how you rigged some of your key points. I'm also keen on rigging... check out some of my clips, its always cool to learn from others...
Nice, sure beats the hell out of my jump (see my channel), but I reckon we had a better view, and the swing out into empty space that we had was friggin awesome.
Nice jumps. Not have such places in Poland. So we jump from chimney of thermal power plant (984ft), now jump from 330ft and. We combat with physics. Maybe we jump in future, together.
haha, no it did not include the car. it was derived mostly from the cameras i bought (especially the high speed camera). the rope and hardware cost about $5000-$6000 (a little over a mile of rope); however, i did not include a lot of video of the other systems we had set up for retrieval and shock absorbtion. this is so people do not try to replicate this.
hehe people will try to duplicate it whether you show the shock absorption or not. They will most likely get hurt because they did not factor in the shock adsorption. So probably a good idea not to leave out important things.
Fucking ridiculous guys. Okay but seriously, next time I am getting in on this shit. It is a great story though, just a bunch of dudes, going out and doing it. You only live once.
cool stuff. I just hope you picked u the cans when you were done.

4 ropes safe as my kid jump off that try 2 osman style
dano11000 2 years ago
The point of rope jumping is not to be dangerous. The point is to jump off a cliff and live to tell about it. Dan Osman did some amazing things; however, he made a lot of mistakes; namely, using only a single tyrolean and knowingly crossing jump lines. Anyways, I think you missed the point of this video entirely.

Nice knowing you, seems foolish to me, but at least you drilled holes in perfectly good rocks. You will die doing this.

that is an absolutely amazing video, you guys have done something pretty dam special, not that you dont know that already though xD congrats! Can anyone tell me the name of the opera song at the start of that video? sounds like charlotte church or something?
Planker09 3 years ago
thanks for the compliment! the name of the original song was the ecstasy of gold by ennio morricone; however, the version in the video was a remix of which i have no clue to the origin. I think it might have been used in a nike commercial? hope this helps

Nice, sure beats the hell out of my jump (see my channel), but I reckon we had a better view, and the swing out into empty space that we had was friggin awesome.
One day I'd love to do some more...

Nice jumps. Not have such places in Poland. So we jump from chimney of thermal power plant (984ft), now jump from 330ft and. We combat with physics. Maybe we jump in future, together.

Awesome, but sick! U ROK!
kmaatja 3 years ago
haha, no it did not include the car. it was derived mostly from the cameras i bought (especially the high speed camera). the rope and hardware cost about $5000-$6000 (a little over a mile of rope); however, i did not include a lot of video of the other systems we had set up for retrieval and shock absorbtion. this is so people do not try to replicate this.
norwejon 3 years ago
hehe people will try to duplicate it whether you show the shock absorption or not. They will most likely get hurt because they did not factor in the shock adsorption. So probably a good idea not to leave out important things.
How big was the jolt once the rope tightened?
vs say a bungee jump?
goblin072 3 years ago

Fucking ridiculous guys. Okay but seriously, next time I am getting in on this shit. It is a great story though, just a bunch of dudes, going out and doing it. You only live once.
