  • Ryan knows what this is about.

  • The studio version of this song is amazing. Sadly this is not.

  • I love his musical genious, his songs, and I will always look upward to his gift of talent. However, after seeing his embarrasing live performance in Ann Arbor a few years back, I can only hope he gets "straight" and buys a bar of soap and some shampoo with the money I wasted on a ticket to see him stumble around the stage smoking cigarettes, and playing along to a 45rpm recording of "Like A Virgin".

  • LOL... Who is the douchebag that disliked this?

  • here because of cocoakuma <3

  • La Cienega is a beautiful sounding proper noun. Use your imagination to fill it in with any scenery you like.

  • So, so beautiful. The cello... *sigh*

  • this is my sad lullaby

  • heart wrenching, beautiful, pure and oh my goodness!! never never get sick of this song ever it is everlasting.......

  • Ryan Adams is a fucking genius!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I always picture La Cienega to be a city/road or maybe a bar. Obviously the song is about a girl but this La Cienega mocks his departure or return...

Ryan Adams is my number one.

  • @kellym41284 La Cienega is a major street in LA. It runs from Sunset Blvd in West Hollywood and fades out somewhere south of LAX in Inglewood or Hawthorn I think. La Cienega , above the 10fwy, is money money money. Beverly Center, high end resturants, a couple strip cubs, high end boutiques...South of the 10fwy its just...ghetto. Ugly hood. Cant imagine ANYBODY writing a song using this street as a metephor...maybe La Brea and some others...not La Cienega...

  • @VoodooPolitico It's aslo a place in Santa Fe County, New Mexico

  • @VoodooPolitico Right.. but he isn't really using the street as a metaphor. He's talking about a girl, but he's also personifying the street as someone who says bye to him after he visits.. That's all I'm saying.

  • @kellym41284 I get it. Its just that I cant see La Cienega Blvd. having ANY soul or character to it. Hard to see why he used it in the song. So many OTHER streets in this town have real character. La Cienega is just...blah. If the guy is relating his OWN real life experience with somebody who lives near La Cienega and he relates that street to that person and he is being TRUE to his memory/experience...I get it. Or hell, maybe it has nothing to do with La Cienega Blvd AT ALL.

  • wonderfully.... just wonderfully this song!!!!

  • Cada día me fascina más este hombre. Es imposible no enamorarse de canciones como esta.

  • Wonderful song...My favourite line is 'One breaks my body, the other breaks my soul'...What a beautiful but eloquent way to describe alcohol and love. Poetic!

  • all you people that think this song is about a city are absurd; song is pretty self explanatory; stop trying to be self righteous. phenomenal work as always from ryan.

  • @dcwiekowski Correct sir. He said in an interview this song as well as Two (and I'm sure it is true for many other numbers) is about a girl and his drug addiction.

    A city? don't think so.

  • Fookin' 'ell!!! That was simply stunning...

  • "and i'm too scared to know how i feel about u know"... just thinking about it makes me feel sad.. and yeah.. "i hold u CLOSE in the BACK of my mind".. always.. =/

this song is saaad and it doesnt seem like its about a city

  • nothing compares to this

  • This isn't about a city. It's a about a girl.

  • what a great song.

    love it

  • Great song from a legendary song writer.Flying the flannel!

  • Very great Love Song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i love him and i love the song

  • I love the info post on this song. "Ryan's tribute to Los Angeles, to go along with his tributes to other fine cities like New York and Chicago... "

That set me thinking, and somehow, I couldn't help hearing Tom Wingfield saying that, in the line that goes, "in otherwise peaceful cities like Chicago, Cleveland, St. Louis..."

And with that, "He is... an emissary from a world of reality that we were somehow set apart from."

In memory everything happens to music.

  • wow.. that was on 3sat? it's a german tv, what's the show called?

  • la cinega is a street in Los Angeles which he wrote about when leaving LA to relocate to NYC

  • I think he uses a lt of place names to represent girls. 'I'll always love you though New York', ' Dear Chicago you'll never guess' 'Goodnight Hollywood Boulevard'. You get the point. Kind of hard to do that with English names!!!

  • you are 100% correct. Finally, someone wo actally knows thir shit

  • @waves14 : easy. I'll always love you Swindon Town Services. Dear Slough, you'll never guess. Goodnight Basingstoke highstreet.

  • @waves14 what about "English Girls Approximately"? - "a Norfolk waterfall" ... (not as sexy as Hotel Chelsea Nights, admitted).

  • @giddensisadualist I think he's talking about a chick Virginia who had a mullet ;)

  • whats la cienega? a girl's name?

  • Jump to: navigation, search

    La Cienega Boulevard

South end: I-405 near LAX Airport

    Major

    junctions: I-10 near Santa Monica

North end: Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood

La Cienega Boulevard is a major north-south arterial road that runs between El Segundo Boulevard in El Segundo, California on the south and the Sunset Strip/Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood.

  • Well, it's a street, but the word itself "la ciénaga" is a Spanish word meaning "swamp".

  • haha funny that one of the most beautiful places has a name that means "swamp"

  • man i miss him wearing those flannel shirts. I love the button-up shirts he wears, though. But I'll say one thing - plaid flannel shirts are a major turn-on.

  • Oh, I know what you mean about the flannel shirts...so sexy w/ that hair of his too! I think they need to make a serious comeback!

This song is one of my faves too!

  • 'flannel' shirts definitely seem like they're making a comeback.

except, it's mostly just plaid button-up shirts that kids call 'flannel' because they don't know any better, and not real flannel's like this western style one.

  • what performance is this from? How can I get thing?

  • my fave song ever.

  • brilliant

  • wow. "how I feel about you now"

  • Ha ha, enough with the sad songs? Only in relation to the tragedy, loneliness and heartbreak evident in his other songs does "feels so good but damn it makes me hurt" not seem sad.

    Nice tune, nice job ufopilot.

  • @moonpainter metaphors

  • awesome...ufopilot1001, you're on your way to youtube super stardom...keep bringin the goods
