  • Great song. It's just beutifully done.

  • Wow!

Lots of soul in their live performance.

I always did like Joel's style.

Say goodbye was one of my favorites because of the passion he puts into the song.

    Great stuff.

    Thanks for the post!

  • Tune

  • Boston Amanda

  • Bosto

  • So Many Faces In & out of my life.. some will last some will just be now & then!!! How True are those words??? Love this... one of his BEST!!

  • Live 1981

  • life is a fucking series of fucking hellos and fucking goodbyes

  • i wouldn't call billy joel a poet. he's more of a great storyteller.

  • @anotherjoshua Billy is a poet and a storyteller. I love Billy, he is awesome.

  • its ......im speechless

  • This man got fire !!! No reverb, delay and all this other shit. It´s just live and good.

  • Would like to hear and see Billy play the Cheers theme, it's right dowm his alley

  • merecia una carrera mas exitosa y prolifica(billi joel) Esta es mi favorita, pero PIANO MAN (Versioneada por nuestra Ana Belen) es otro tema impresionante.

  • @adomede LOL. Fail.

  • although i wish the line was "i'm afraid it's time for the violens.."

  • @miketb42 Do you mean 'violins' or 'violence'?

  • simply awesome !

  • good good song in the attic.

  • most likely my favorite billy joel song

  • i love this song

  • he did a great job in this performance..

  • great song

  • Here his was clearly hungry and singing with heart, pressure, showing who is was. A great display of Joel showing that what he did in 1977 can clearly beat most male vocallist of today...

  • @uoyebutbackwords billy joel is great,,

  • He's amazing live. Sounds pitch-perfect.

  • It may have been written as a Spectoresque song, but it is one of Billy Joel's best. It is a great concert song, and has great lyrics.

  • Why does the Eminem cover come up first?

    What the fuck is this.

  • i keep watching this over and over and still haven't gotten tired of it. and i had the same exact hair back in 1977- lol!

  • SAY GOODBYE TO HOLLYWOOD,SAY GOODBYE MY BABY

  • I performed the sax bit for my graduation! I didn't get the high note though, lol, i love this song.

  • where the fuck are all the "whoa oh oh oh oh oh´s" what a fucking rip off!

  • dont dis miley..she will be around 25 years from now

  • great performance by BJ on this one. superb vocals and musicianship. too bad the video isn't of a better quality. i understand a couple of the fellows in this band have passed away, i think Doug and maybe Liberty too. RIP guys, thanks for those 70s memories.

  • @jasonwheel Liberty is still alive,I think Doug passed away sometime in the 90s

  • @blutocampbell is that Doug on the sax here?

  • @jasonwheel No Doug is the bass player,Richie Canata plays sax

  • @blutocampbell tell me since you seem to know the band well: on the back side of the album 'Scenes from an Italian Restaurant' there's a guy sitting to BJ's left holding a bottle of wine in his hand and looking at it. is that Doug or Canata or who? it's an interesting foto.

  • @jasonwheel Thats Doug,I'm a huge Billy Joel fan and Liberty is one with the glasses standing up

  • @blutocampbell ok here's one more for you. this performance looks very live. would you know where and when it was recorded? and tell me if i'm right or wrong. i guess on the back of the restaurant album cover to BJ's right is Canata who's also playing sax on this one. you tell me.

  • @jasonwheel He's sitting between Billy Joel and Doug

  • @LawnboyBaker i hit that shit

  • Would he make it today? With the crap that passes for music these days? I'd say so. I saw him a year ago at Wrigley Field and the place was packed. The music business is starving for real talent.

  • No MTV, FM radio just starting, saw him in MSG in 78, sold out. I remember there was a small fight in front of the stage and he went into the crowd to break it up!! Had his albums etc. Very popular with girls at that time also. Different times, would he make it today? I think so!!!

  • i have the cd.. great performance.. my favourite music

  • 0:49 sexy hair flip. that beats justin bieber any day

  • This was Billy Joel before he was, well Billy Joel.

  • @ Ruskybalboa.....I tried to respond to your comments - got continuous errors for some reason....

Here's what I wanted to say:

While I appreciate the fact that you have much love for Billy, it's almost offensive that you mention those 2 other lightweights in your comments.

$1,000,000 says You'll NEVER hear a Miley or Gaga tune in 30 years time (or any other artist that is currently popular). Call me if I'm wrong.

Billy, and others from his time will never be duplicated

  • greatest hits in 80's & 90's belong to billy joel i like river to dreams.

  • billy joel rules...

  • liberty divetto is the heart and soul of billys music

  • @mcwhiteface spell them shits right

  • Billy has never been complacent!!!!!!!!!!Do you know any of his work since the 80's...he may have fallen out of favor in the world of grunge, hip hop, rap and for the youngsters...but he has kept true to himself and the kind of music he feels he needs to create for himself...listen to some of his classical stuff....complacent my ass!

  • I believe he wrote this for Ronnie Spector in the style of "Be My Baby". More of a tribute than a ripoff.

  • fuckin brilliant song!

  • He looks like Sylvester Stallone to me on this video

  • LOVE YOU YOU YOU BILLY !!!!

  • Had this album. Great!

  • Hicksville, NY ... represent.

  • aaauuuuuuuu que rolon vato puro bar sonora de hermosillo

  • The songs not about hating, sex or any other of the topic so popular nowadays, still it speaks to everyone.

    Billy is the man.

  • Man what a vocal legend!!...way better than Miley Cyrus and Lady Gaga put together!!

  • @ruskybalboa Thats for sure even though he doesnt have anything to do with them lol

  • @ruskybalboa Billy Joel's toe could sing better than Miley Cyrus and Lady Gaga. It probably is also more attractive.

  • @ruskybalboa How can you compare Billy Joe to them? .

All they they were put together for was to make the man money .

Nothing More! 60's & 70's were real singers and song writers not like today.

  • @ruskybalboa

That should go without saying ...

  • @ruskybalboa well anyone who thinks cyrus and gaga can sing better than joel are stupid period.

  • @ruskybalboa yeah! Hes a dude!

  • @ruskybalboa what's a "Lady GaGa"?

  • @ruskybalboa ......um, duh.

  • zaz este video me recuerda mejores tiempos ja lo bueno nunca dejara de serlo

  • "Life is a series of hellos and goodbyes I'm afraid it's time for goodbye again"

Even though Billy will never agree, he is one of the greatest poets of the 20th century.

  • oh yea

  • You got totally right.

Billy Joel deserves a honorable mention on universal literature

  • @kcufmalsi I completely agree. matter of trust, downeaster alexa, piano man, all about soul, all have some great lyrics, very vivid, poignant, powerful, and most of all: honest... (such a lonely word)

  • @kcufmalsi Very well said.

  • Encore...encore!!!!!

  • AT 0:45 the caption says "In the Attic 1981" so the title must be off (it wasn't from 1977).

Song is still amazing after all these years though!!

  • That's what makes it a classic!!!!

  • @beck943 - This clip is definitely from before 1981. I know because it was featured in an episode of "You Can't Do That On Television" from 1979 - from when it was a local show in the Ottawa, Ontario area only and showed early rock videos. 1977 is most likely correct even though the song did not become a hit single until 1981.

  • awesome!

  • No. And it helps that he rote it...

  • just checked the covers, not one could remotley sing it like the man himself...

  • This song is genius

  • This sounds just like the original studio Turnstiles version and the 1980 Songs In The Attic version. No strings in the background like the Turnstiles recording, though. In the SITA version, the last verse is not repeated.

  • Say a word out of line

And you find that the friends you had

    Are gone forever

    Forever

So many faces in and out of my life

    Some will last

Some will just be now and then

Life is a series of hellos and goodbyes

I'm afraid it's time for goodbye again

    Awesome.

  • yes. great lyrics indeed. Joel has many in his canon just as apt.

  • Imagine if there had been Facebook when he wrote this song?

Actually, the lyrics STILL fit! Billy Joel is a timeless genius...

  • @jawillo thanks for writing out these meaningful lyrics

  • the best of him!!! great great great!!!

  • ahh his hair looks so hot!

  • I love how he plays the song with so much passion!! This song tells a story that you can't put in a book or a magazine, this has to come from a song.

  • What a song! Great, great, timeless music!

  • the lyrics of this song tell a story, it's a great ballad with a wall of sound, just like BJ wanted it to be ... props to Ronnie, and the band that plays behind billy

  • marvellos!

  • This was Billys tribute to Ronnie Spector who was treated so horrible by Phil. Luv U Ronnie!!!

  • I really want to say goodbye Farewell!! to Hollywood. It's just a little town of bullshit, TV nothing. Los Angeles is a wanna be city, so far far away from the real world. I hate them there. It's unfortunate that the world sees our country through LA, TV and films...we are more like DC and NYC, cities no one ever sees.

  • Not complacent....he's 60, leave him alone.

  • いやー 色褪せないですねー

    pianomanといい

    ビリーの曲には、恋愛だけじゃない 男の生き様考えさせられます

  • Well stuff it's best not to get involved with- "friends" have to take care of some things themselves.

  • Liberty asked for financial help from Billy because of divorce and was turned away. A true friend would have helped him out. They know each other since they were 17 years old.

  • damn they had crazy hair in the 70s

  • does anyone know what instrument make the clicking noise throughout this song? ive always wondered that

  • They are castanets. See entry in Wikipedia if you are not sure what castanets are. Hope this helps.

  • Of course, Janina, they are only in the studio version (Turnstyles album). I don't hear any castanets here. You can also hear them on "Be My Baby" by the Ronettes, mentioned earlier.

  • Hey man, dont bag out billy he was way more consistand in the 80s he had numerous hits like we didnt start the fire, uptown girl, tell her about, the longest time, a matter of trust, your only human, i go to extremes river of dreams

  • complacent is right. his last studio lp was 15 years ago! it's time for some new stuff!

  • He stated clearly in his interviews he wouldn't be releasing his new stuff. He hasn't released anything since 1997, he wants to devote himself to classical music as a composer. On the other hand he will and does surely do ocasional concerts. Give man a break, he's 60 wants some rest, he isn't 30 anymore.

  • well age is a lame excuse, springsteen has put out 5 new lp's of new material in the past 7 years. he's just rich and lazy is what it is! lol....he's ok though. i just think it'd get boring touring year after year w/ out putting out anything new. who the hell wants to hear a billy joel classical album anyways.

  • As I said he is focusing on COMPOSING CLASSICAL music, not on his pop stuff, which doesn't mean he isn't doing anything.

  • i am not trying to get everyone upset lol...i just feel if he's touring all the time, why not give us some new music eh?

  • You're a prick! Fuck you! I want to hear his classical compositions. You don't have a clue about music. Billy does whatever he wants to do. He's created some fantastic music over the years. And if you think he's lazy, you're a dumb fuck. You don't know what it's like to walk in his shoes.

  • lighten up. i know a lot about music i have plenty of examples. billy joel isn't god for chrissakes. i like him, i just don't get why he doesn't put out some new pop music on occasion....

  • its not really about pumping out new music every now and then. for billy music is more of a passion not something just to please fans (though its part of it) and its not something he cares about when associated with marketing. he wants to do classical music for himself, he makes the music for himself first, not for the corporations and industries that want to sell his product. plus when he makes music he wants to put a lot of thought into it, not just put it out occasionally

  • Rip-off is something you do when you do not acknowledge the crime. If you fl=ollowed Bilys career he did "SGTH" as a tribute to Ronnie and her style. Try knowing what you are talking about next time.

  • @funshipM174 Ronnie even recorded a version of the song with the E Street Band, so there was no rip off, its an homage

  • @Niteowl128 I Said in my comment that Billy did this song as a tribute to Ronnie, I never said she "ripped" Billy off.

  • @funshipM174 I know, I was agreeing with what you wrote

  • @StevieRotten i have to agree w/ thebestbillyjoel do you know how hard it is to write a hit song, espec one that is commercially viable...well i'll tell you from my experience it's very difficult....Billy had been on the charts since the mid 70's thats a long time for any artist, besides the fact that billy writes all the music, lyrics, sings & plays multi instruments that is nothing short of miraculous.

  • @StevieRotten I think it's meant to be an homage to the "Wall Of Sound" style, not a "ripoff." Nonetheless, whether or not Billy "sold out" after the 70's is a reasonable debate because he did make his sound a little more pop-friendly, but he also needed the money and kept what he did pretty unique. At least we agree on one thing: Great talent.

  • @StevieRotten The term is "homage". He wrote it and sang it with Ronnie Spector in mind.

  • It was cool to see Billy and Elton playing each other's tunes in concert.

  • Ive always thought of this song as Billy Joel's tribute to the Phil Spector Sound. The intro sounds exactly like the Ronnette's "Be My Baby".

  • He says that that's exactly what he patterned it after.

  • As a fan of Billy Joel for more than 30 years, I am giving up hope for new material, and since all he does is release GH compilations these days, he should release a dvd of all the live tv performances he's done. All these clips are exceptional, as Billy was a consistently great live performer in the 70s and early to mid 80s. I am hoping we can all do an intervention, and get Liberty and Billy speaking again. They were a great match musically and I know they cared for each-other for a long time

  • Too bad only him and billy know what really happened. They were together for so long, I would love to hear what happened for real. You know anything? Any recent updates?

  • To be fair long island isnt exactly new yawk

  • Legend of Legends he is.

  • Joel is got a great voice; good thing he does not sound like the rest of you New YORKERS...you know like a shit sales man ; with samples in his mouth ......fu if ya can't take a yoke....

  • Does anyone know the name of the drummer? Please!

How to make great backing drumming sound so great and look so easy.

  • The Drummers name is Liberty Devito. He has been with Billy Joel for over 30 years.

  • Was....he hasn't been with the band for a couple of years b/c of a falling out he had with Billy. Too bad, I hope they make up.

  • @thebestbillyjoel Billy Joel is the best!!!!! LIsten to "Angry Young Man"!!!!!!

  • liberty Devito is the Drummer

  • @Pc8975 Liberty Devitto.

  • @Pc8975 liberty devito

  • @Pc8975 Liberty DeVitto

  • @blutocampbell who ???

  • i would say this was from 1976

  • haunting..

  • WOW! Billy Joel is simply awesome, what a voice, what a pianist and what a song writer!! =]
