robert blake - real life wife killer (look it up) - is absolutely creepy in this film. pyramid head? the whole silent hill team adored lynch and even did a direct nod to him in sh4.
The Mystery Man reminds me of Pyramid Head from Silent Hill 2, by that I mean he's trying to tell Fred what he's done to Renee like what James did to Mary.
I think of Blake's character as being a very wealthy man who likes to freak people out in his spare time. He doesn't have to work a job so he just messes around with human beings. Shit I'd do it.
The Blake character is the Pullman character's subconscience, like Jiminy Cricket to Pinocchio. He doesn't physically exist, he is the figment of a fragmented psyche in a fugue state of mind. He is there to drive home the fact that Pullman's character committed murder and he must face up to it, however Pullman's mind is so guilt ridden that he creates an entirely new identity but he still can't bury his subconscience (The Mystery Man) because his shadow-self is a murderer too.
This is some creepy shit.

Yeah, yeah, yeah! :)
Silent Hill 2 is VERY similar to Lost Highway in some way.

Considering that Robert Blake murdered his wife in real life, this is scary stuff indeed.

Spooky Scene and great film.
I believe this would have been the very first scene in the movie if the storytelling had been deviced in linear time.

@kalimaganeshshivan
I know it's been a year, but... That's a very interesting theory and sounds like it's correct. I haven't seen the movie, but I read a summary of it.
I also wonder if Renee was with the other guy first and then cheated on him with Fred, just like what happens with Pete.

it is not supposed to be funny
dragoon003 3 years ago
I'm not sure it's not supposed to be funny. A lot of Lynch's work straddles scary, disturbing and funny all at the same time.
