As far as the topic. I don't believe it's necessary to physically discipline a child. To do so, is to condition that child to believe that violence/physical intimidation is a viable alternative to get others to do what it is they would like them to do. Rather than teaching the child how to handle conflict/disagreements rationally, you're teaching them how to be an abuser and accept abuse from others.
