  • Brb pirating Religulous for shits and giggles because Bill Maher turned into a total toolbag.

He turned into everything he hated, trying to defend SOPA while admitting he didn't read the bill or have any understanding of how it works. Sounds like republifag logic to me. "I like it despite violating basic freedoms because it will protect my money." What a retard.

  • I had to lol@ his mention of how he got "ripped off" with people pirating his documentary Religulous, I mean who would buy it?

  • @salgurdar

    Hahahahahahaha...Soo True!

  • Of fuck...You shouldn't have brought up Religilous. Serisouly, look like a bitter rich asshole crying for more money, bro.

  • Caucasian looting? wow really bill? damn. let not care about people seeing a film that could inspire people to open their fucking eyes. lets be more concerned with people wanting to get some free shit which might prevent you from getting that second yacht. epic FAIL.

  • Your mad because you made a movie about insulting peoples beliefs for the sake of profit and now and people are downloading it of the internet. I would play a song on the worlds smallest violin, but I'm afraid I might get sued by the music industry for copyright infringement.

Not to say piracy is right or wrong but seriously Bill, shit the fuck up. Your just pissed cause you didn't make big bucks of a shit movie and you think infringing on peoples rights will make you more cash. Fuck. You.

  • Ironically if SOPA did pass, we would not be able to view this clip on Youtube.

  • I always wondered why some of my friends would admire him in the first place. His shows are rather boring and the movie was just sad. Even though the topics are the same, there is no comparison to legends like George Carlin.

Needless to say, whatever respect I've had for Bill Maher is lost.

Meanwhile, Louis CK made huge profits by selling his own show for a reasonable price, online. Yes, I downloaded it from TPB for free. However, I still paid the man after watching because the show was good.

  • He's not supporting sopa. He's against piracy.

  • @kubek His support is implied. He doesn't say explicitly either way about SOPA itself, but showed no consideration for the implications it has on free speech as well as the architecture of the Internet. Overall he just whines about how poorly his movie did at the box offices and in the DVD market.

  • Do not download Bill Maher's "Religulous" even if you can do so for free.

As you can tell from the above clip, Bill Maher is a total douche. So it is a good bet the documentary isn't worth the bandwidth nor the disk space it takes up, much less your time in viewing it.

  • At least Maher gets guests that don't always agree with him, and he admits when he's wrong. FOX news hardly ever does!

  • i usually love bill maher, and pretty much agree with most of the stuff he says, because it is true.. BUT, this is a huge exception, and he just hasnt looked into it enough to be thinking clearly about it.. to be honest, if it wasnt for piracy, i wouldnt have ever seen religulous or even been a bill maher fan, and the same goes for hundreds of thousands im sure... :) stop SOPA though.. its so stupid..

  • YES! Instead of watching this here and commenting as allowed under fair use in U.S. copyright law, I'd much rather have to pay for a bloated cable subscription and watch 10,000 Progressive and Burger King ads just to catch this brief bit of anti-SOPA lunacy on display.

Anyone who thinks otherwise is a clearly a software pirate and should be sentenced to life in prison.

  • I saw the "owned"

  • Strange to me that people think that Maher got "owned" in this discussion.

  • Well I do like free shit. But as I said elsewhere, people need to be "allowed" to break the law because to even attempt something like SOPA or PIPA or ACTA would cost far more than anyone would ever see in benefits.

  • Bill's right again.

  • @TexanMike, Bill's right about supporting SOPA? Care to explain?

  • @TexanMike bill is completely wrong, for once. (here, i fixed your post for you)

  • LOL i typically agree with bill, but i'm so HAPPY that he got himself ripped a new asshole.

  • Bill, people knows that if this acta is approved, not to have free music or videos is the smallest part of the problem.... the real problem is a few people controlling the information that circulates on the web, information is power..... how to imagine a real democracy without external and objective surveillance of the world through the internet or the recent middle west social movements without the internet as a basic tool to freely transmit information and ideas??

  • Okay, I'm generally pigeonholed as a liberal. I'm a big fan of Jon Stewart, Steven Colbert, Lewis Black, etc etc etc. The big reason I'm not a fan of most (but not all) conservative humor it centers not around 'We make fun of what they think' but 'We make fun of what we THINK they think.' And it's these ridiculously broad strokes and generalizations that are why I am not a fan of Bill Maher. Everybody's stupid but him, says he.

  • we do want free shit? now dont we? lol

  • Bill, shut up. You wouldnt like it if the oil companies wrote laws so why are you shilling for the Entertainment industry to do the same. SOPA is nothing but a power grab by washington under the guise of stopping Piracy. There are better ways to go about stopping piracy than to turn the net into a Washington controlled police state.

  • Stick to what you know, Bill. Religion doesn't really change all that quickly, so it's pretty easy to pick a defensible high-ground from which you can mock the hypocrisy and ridiculousness of modern religion consistently. You do this well -- Religulous was pretty entertaining.

However, it would seem that politics and, more specifically, intellectual property law might be a bit too fast-paced for you.

  • Bill, I've said it before, I'll say it again. You suck, you're not funny, and your political understanding and discourse is that of a child's, and the world would be much better if you stopped talking about politics and religion.

  • bill Maher is the one who(unknowingly ) makes the red herring argument

  • As for movies specifically, the MPAA has its effective methods of tracking its content before it's released to DVD. By the time it's feasible to get away with pirating movies, they've already gone through their cinematic debuts and 9/10, have seen massive fucking profits. And like the top comment says, people who pirate these movies are more likely to be the people who would not have otherwise paid for them. And DVD sales are hardly the primary revenue for the MPAA.

  • It's as if he's saying, "I'm here to spread truth and hope, but ONLY to people who are willing to pay me for the privilege." This is not the kind of person I respect. This is the kind of person I WANT to steal from.

Absolutely disingenuous. No artistic integrity whatsoever. Bill Maher is a whore, simple as that.

  • @Khayman8888 You want him to spend money making a film that people would see for free? Now THAT would make him a whore. He spent money on a film and he doesn't want other people pirating it, I can understand that, it doesn't take away from the message of the film. Would you work for free?

  • I just love how Bill Maher's supposed "intention" behind creating Religulous was to spread this idea that atheists shouldn't be afraid to be open about their atheism, and that it's important to actually fight back against the roots of theocracy and religious corruption.

But then he turns around and decries people who didn't pay for the right to hear that message. So it really leads you to wonder what his intention actually is? Is he a messenger of righteous truth or just a businessman?

  • This is why I love Skrillex; "just like i always say, go pirate it if you don't have money..i just want you to have it... or you can buy it here..either way I'll love you"

Stop being such a fucking golddigger, you can make money from ads anyways.

  • I can't deny that I was concerned about my free shit:p

  • SOPA is retarded, but the cognitive dissonance here is appalling...if you 'wouldn't have paid for it' then DON'T CONSUME IT! IP/Piracy is a very complicated issue and $15 for a movie ticket is total bullshit...but grow some balls and admit you STEAL! OK so its from rich people, ok so you'll claim its overpriced...but you aren't doing it to feed your family..you're doing it for 1st world entertainment. A guess v. few professional creatives commenting here.. what a sense of entitlement!

  • Bill says his documentary was pirated. Wow. Somebody was bored. He couldn't give that away. I wouldn't steal that if he slipped a $20 in it. Bill - don't lie. You'll go to Hell for that. Dumbass.

  • FUCK YEAH! WE WANT TO BE FREE! WE DON'T WANT TO BE AFRAID!

  • I do not see this as him getting OWNED, i think what the lady is saying about the scalpel is pretty much the point he was making. He says he was behind it, but then he thought well maybe it should be regulated to an extent... I think the ignorance comes from people who do not understand that regulation is a big part of why we can all live here together with out wanting to kill one another or better yet with out killing eachother...lolol...

  • @starfunktron btw "80% of the piracy happens in China" wtf does that have to do with SOPA... what a douche... in no way owned..lol

  • @starfunktron He was referring to when Bill said "Caucasian looding"

  • I completely agree with the top comment. Guess what? I download Religulous on PirateBay. I would have NEVER paid money to see that shit, so you didn't lose anything, Bill.

  • Same goes for online. If so many people were not pirating copyrighted material AKA stealing! Then the government would not have the perfect excuse they now have to come in and regulate its use. And for anybody that says movies and music are art and should be free. FUCK YOURSELF! It takes work and money to make all art including music, movies and TV shows and that art deserves reward. True fans of art wouldn't steal it. Anyways fuck SOPA, fuck megaupload, fuck the government, and fuck hypocrites

  • @thechampofchamp Nobody is saying that music and art should be free, but if you find me an artist who says that he only wants his music/art to be available to people with money, I'll show you a soulless douchebag.

The artists who tend to complain about "losses" accrued due to piracy are the ones who are making MILLIONS.

The upstarting artists, for the most part, just want to get their shit out there, free or not. They appreciate those who pay, and many do. Some don't.

  • @thechampofchamp An artist needs to be fed, sure. He deserves to make money for what he's doing. But the second the money becomes more important to him than the actual value of his art and its impact on the people is the second he'll be seen as a fucking sell out. That's what a sell out IS.

Ask an upstart artist, DJ, filmmaker, etc. and you'll probably hear something about, "I just want people to hear/see it. Money is nice too, but it's secondary."

And that's what the spirit of "piracy" is

  • @thechampofchamp actually all about. Free flow of information, the spread of culture, the spread of art to more people- breaking down market barriers on the spread of art.

You can't PIRATE a concert. You can't PIRATE the experience of going to a movie theater. People aren't really pirating merch, and plenty of people like OWNING CDs from bands they love.

The MPAA and RIAA are simply trying to corner the market, and any implication that piracy really "hurts" the artist is a joke.

  • @thechampofchamp How sad for poor Lady Gaga and Jay Z that they'll only be able to afford one private jet this year. But take artists like Blu, Immortal Technique, Skrillex, Deadmau5- they don't give a fuck if you pirate their music. They are making money from CD sales, AND shows, AND whatever other endorsements. They're doing fine and they know it. And as for the unknown artists, piracy is their best fucking friend.

So get off your high horse, guy.

  • @thechampofchamp AKA not stealing, you mean?

  • I wouldn't know who Bill Maher was if it weren't for youtube. I might have bought his product after being introduced to him via a user generated content site. ( I probably won't though, because he seems like a bit of a twat.)

I live in Oz and I don't understand where else I would be able to easily watch topical content from around the world, (without having to trawl through the world newspapers) and be in touch with what is going on.

  • The more I hear people talk about this the more I believe this country is fucked. No, not because of the dumb ass government. Because of the dumb ass government and its citizens. Yes, SOPA sucks and it deserved to die, but come on people own up for once. It's funny the same people who scream for regulation on Wall Street want no regulation online. We need regulation on Wall Street, because it's filled with sacks of shit who steal constantly. If they didn't steal they would not need regulation.

  • @thechampofchamp Wow. Are you serious? So you think its okay to take a company/site down that was used for legal stuff to begin with without and before there is any hearing and you equal that to regulation of wall street? Really? This is like wall street going down and offline now getting people in jail and then start asking questions.

But it seems the US is good at shooting first asking questions later so i am not surprised just pissed.

  • It's always been his style to bring on guests and open up the the topic by stating his embittered opinion. They than can refute him, deny him, correct him etc.. and he listens. He will learn the details of this topic and we will see him come around.

  • I disagree with SOPA and PIPA, and the corporations backing it need to realize they can no longer charge any price they want. Having said that, tons of people download copyrighted material because they can get stuff for free and there is no denying that. Anyone can claim that their concern is over freedom of internet, which is valid, but they are not being honest about their human nature.

  • Holy shit, Bill, it's been 3 years since your movie bombed. You brought it up at the Oscars, now DROP it. Fucking annoying.

  • What an asshat. Yeah let's censor the internet because your shitty movie flopped and didn't make money.

  • 90% of the "Copyright" shit is outdated anyways...

  • SOPA is a bill proposed by some large corporations that want to do away w/ all freedoms that made internet great and only want aspects of it to function that make them great instead...

  • I lose more respect for him every day... so sad.

  • "Copyright laws were written to keep others from making money from the work of another. They are used today to force payment from people who make no money from the work of another they just simply are enjoying the work."

  • I pirated "Religulous" I never would have watched it otherwise. Is it more important that his point of view was put out there or that I pay to hear it. I have been turned on to many new things that I wouldn't have otherwise. I don't see that as a bad thing.

  • Bill Maher, "We still want free shit". You have lost all credibility with that statement. Do a little research before flaunting your unsupported opinion.

  • @SuperJesusFuck Before you call people idiots, you m ight want to consider your name is SUPERJESUSFUCK.

  • I wonder how some of these people would feel if they were the ones not making money on something they made? If my band released a CD and a handful of people bought it then released it on the internet and other people said "hey, why pay $9.99 on itunes or amazon when I can get it free?" i'd lose my income. People bargain shop, and if I can find something cheap or free without it being ilegal to buy, I will. I understand it all -I make copies of songs for friends so I am guilty- but I understand.

  • Yeah, I also fail to see how Maher got "OWNED" by this. He has an opinion and his panel has an opinion. He's a content creator and they're not. A LOT of you need to look up what "stealing" means. Justifications that "it's too expensive" or "it's just crap they put out" are not gonna cut it; according to the law, piracy is still stealing, so get over it. I find it most ironic that I'm seeing this on what is basically pirated HBO content.

  • If it weren't for piracy, I wouldn't have seen Religulous. Would you rather have its message spread ou cash in a few bucks? I've always thought Bill's answer would be "spread the message". I was wrong. The problem is the middleman making his the money through old technologies and bullshit prices. Bill looks like a dick in this.

  • I find it interesting that while Huffington Post posts articles about everything Bill Maher does (he's personal friends with Arianna Huffington) they haven't said boo about this...

  • i thought the point of Religulous was to promote doubt and to make a lot of people realize that religion is a 'neurological disorder' not to get a lot of money from people. Bill Maher you disappoint me.

  • @TheJoniemacaronie well he put money in to making the movie. im sure he wants more money so he can make another one. its a business dude. i think u have to see it both ways as well. im against this bill but i understand it has the right intentions they just need to tweek it...alot.

  • bill maher has his own show and complains about losing a lil money from his dvd...what a douche...

  • Bill's a fucking moron just trying to protect his money. What a fuckin sellout, he sounds like a preppy asshole with a FEDERAL RESERVE stick shoved up his ass

  • C'mon Bill, just because you have a negative view of human behavior doesn't mean that SOPA is a good thing. FYI, the people who really like to steal are some of the people you live next door to. If you feel that poor people should pay for stealing, then why don't you support a bill that would lock up many, many corporate officers and at least half the people in Congress! But then I guess it's okay to steal an unearned paycheck from your constituents!!

  • The way I look at it is this: We have all pirated at one time or another...whether it be big or small, but 99% of the stuff that is "stolen" most people would not buy anyway! The problem starts on the shelves, where you find DVD's that cost (in bulk) maybe 2 cents ea to make, but are being sold for 30-40 or in some cases 50 dollars....fuck that. I remember even back before the internet was big, I would have to REALLY want the song to go out and spend money to "own" it.

  • what a fucking idiot!

  • I remember reading one of these comments stating, "If Hollywood is losing money, then how come actors have those expensive cars and homes?" What this person and others don't relize is that the entire movie is filmed by hundreds of people that work so they can have a roof over their head and food on the table. The guy that makes the backgrounds or the stunt double don't do work for free...though you people seem to think they do.

  • Pirating is not stealing.

If i put your drawing in the copy machine and give it out for free im not stealing. You still have your drawing. THATS WHY WE HAVE DIFFERENT LAWS FOR PIRATING AND STEALING.

  • @FcK2420 Pirating is stealing, because the people who work so hard so that those movies you sit and watch look realistic won't be able to keep their jobs because no one wants to pay money to see their work.

  • @Jackal312 that's not the same as stealing genius

  • @Jackal312 You need to look up what stealing means.

  • Comment removed

  • everyone is all high and mighty until someone cost them money. then they go from know it all youtubers to crying fucking baby's

  • I thought liberals wanted to spread the wealth. I guess it depends on whose wealth it is.

  • Bill, you didn't lose money on a movie no one wanted to buy. Its sales were going to be shitty because those who downloaded it would otherwise not have bought it anyway. Try making a good movie some time.

  • I fail to see where"Bill Maher gets owned." Agree with some that we have the right to make a copy of content as long as it is not for profit, but also it is not to be for distribution. I thought, and I amy be wrong, that a person has the right to make a copy for themself as a back-up, etc. People end up not buying DVD's because they can get a pirated version online; they don't go to the theater because they can see it online. How can someone argue that a company is not losing money by that?

  • @nrbassplayer I DL'd Ironman. Then I went and saw it in theaters. If someone is going to DL something and not go see it in theaters they wouldn't have gone to see it anyway. 'Projected loss' is not loss. If a quality product actually came out of Hollywood I'd pay first. Shit quality means I'm DLing before I buy.

  • Bill maher has lost all credibility whatever he says now must be second guessed.

  • I love how people post "OWNED" in the title banner, and then you click on it and you realize it's complete bullshit. I agree the bill would drastically damage the availability of information and videos online, but Bill is right, it is basically about people wanting free shit. Like people who watch Bill Maher on YouTube instead of paying 14$ a month for HBO.

  • @marlboroman1985 Why should people have to pay to watch crap?

  • that guys on family guy

  • Like if I wanted his documentary...

  • The problem with reporting piracy as a loss or trying to say that you lost money due to piracy is a red herring. the majority of the people pirating your content weren't your customers to begin with. They were never going to buy your product, so you didn't lose money! Citing 100% of piracy as lost revenue is disingenuous and intellectually irresponsible at best.

Furthermore, if companies are losing money to piracy (MPAA/RIAA), maybe they need to innovate their service & eliminate the need to!

  • @dirtysanchezman You don't understand the numbers then. I know the music industry pretty well. Since 2000 its dropped in size more than 70%. Eminem was number one with 7 million album sales. Now, number one can barely reach 3 million. Piracy is more than a loss of revenue, its taken jobs. I don't support SOPA but piracy is a REAL issue. People lose their jobs every day in the music industry. Its pretty sad actually. Remember, its not Timberlake suffering, its the small guy.

  • @dirtysanchezman this is exactly right! old people who own businesses and run the government don't understand the internet and dont understand what they are trying to legislate. they should leave it to the generation who understands and has built the internet to what it is now.

  • @dirtysanchezman Awesome remark sir. Look at ARMAII as an example of innovation. SOPA will be used outside of its bounds just like the patriot act.

  • All I hear from him is "I haven't actually read the bill, but herpa derpa derpy derp"

  • @Goatmon Neither have you.

  • @themisanthropex And you don't hear me spouting opinions about it, do you?

  • @Goatmon Bill Maher didn't do his homework. I guess internet is not his thing. So stay out of it Bill Maher if you don't understand. Sure, piracy is a problem, but governing internet is not the solution.

  • How can you have the audacity to comment on a topic, express an opinion about it, when you know next to nothing about it? Not to mention the fact that he admits not knowing anything about it. He just sees "piracy," and jumps to a shallow conclusion. He makes himself look like an idiotic ass having so much conviction over it, and making light of the opposition to the issue when he has no idea the detail and depth of the issue at hand.

  • Technically if he thinks stealing is wrong then EVERYONE who made a movie or film when hollywood started should be in Jail. Google Motion Picture Patents Company because stealing to one person is borrowing to another.

  • Maher is losing it. Fuck SOPA! Maher will never have miss a better occasion to shut-up...

  • Comment removed

  • wow bill go fuck yourself.

  • "owned" is not the right word unless you want to water down its meaning. Love Bill Maher, but it was refreshing to see him show a position that is entirely selfish and founded on inaccurate information; the right information in this case being the fact that most piracy occurs in China. Any loss of income from pirating "Religulous", while unfortunate, is dwarfed by the negative effects of SOPA and it is profoundly interesting that Bill Maher, of all people, can't see that.

  • 'i havent read the bill, i dont know'... therefore im gonna comment on it on national tv

  • The poster of this vid is being "owned" for making shit up.

  • I can't stand Bill Maher just because I disagree with him and because he is just as bigoted as he claims everyone else is, but he didn't get owned because he admitted "I don't know". If any "debater" says those words, they are admitting their ignorance on said subject. Thus, making it neutral and not a "win or lose" situation... That being said, this video gets one "like" from me! But, yeah, he totally didn't get OWNED.

  • we are the 99%.
