  • I live where I can see a bunch of hills from the road in front of my house. Whenever I was least expecting it as a kid, i looked out to the hills and ran inside as fast as I could, because I didn't want Abiyoyo coming after me.

  • I was terrified ... mortified of this story! lmao

  • I'm 20 and this is really silly because this was read to us in 1st grade (i.e. when I was 5 or 6) this STILL scares the shit out of me I just hopefully wont have any nightmares tonight

  • Omg I've been looking for this for like ever! Ima 18 and a freshman in college and I remember this frm wayyyyyyy back in the day like pre-k or kindergarten. And watchin this took me back. THANKS!! :D

  • I used to have this book. The song just popped into my head today.

  • This totally scared me as a kid! I couldn't sleep especially when he ate the people. It wasn't scary until I heard the narrorator over a casette read it.

  • Ahhh, memories. im 14 but I can somehow remember the 90's fondly. It was an era of color and and are made for children.I used to wanna have Levar Burton for an uncle or something. Ited be kinda imposable, because im white, but ited still be amazing.

  • Wow. We sang the song in kindergarten, and I still remember it. 0__0 This brings back memories.

  • "ZOOOP! Problem, townsfolk?"

  • This was my favorite book when I was younger. My mom had to read it 4 times a day lol

  • One of my favorite Reading Rainbow episodes

  • The scariest part is when he was looking at them when they woke up!

  • That image of Abiyoyo, appearing in the green pastures, used to give me nightmares, when I was 6.

  • As a mother of a son who is 2 years old, I can imagine this story scaring the crap out of him.

  • i remember the book. I once had a dream Britney spears sang it

  • I find it amusing how Pete Seeger refers to lullabies as "propaganda" yet Abiyoyo is totally Anti-Giant propaganda ; ) And that father and his wand was a pre-Internet proto-troll zapping people's chairs away: "ZOOP! NO CHAIR" *trollface*

  • I remember this from like 1st grade!!

  • I remember this from like 1st grade!!!

  • i always thought the lady in blue was asian when i was in 1st grade

  • @NostalgiaAttack She is indeed Asian. The illustrator created a very multicultural town for the story to take place in, with all different skins, features, and modes of dress shown, from traditional African to modern American. It drives home the point that the magician and his son were driven away not for any racially charged reasons, but because they were obnoxious!

  • my teacher used to read this to us and i was scared outta my mind. i loved & hated this all at the same time.

  • I actually had a nightmare based off of this because I watched it. That's why I looked it up. My friend and I were talking about nightmares and this is what caused one of the few childhood nightmares I actually remember.

  • he had stinkin feet cuz he didnt wash em

  • scared me to death when i was little haha

  • I love this book!!!

  • I've missed this. Scared me, too, just like a lot of other kids, looks like. Heheh, interestingly enough, Pete Seger never really did answer that "propaganda" question. ;)

  • *Seeger

  • I was really afraid of aliens when I was little and I saw an episode of this where in a story, a spaceship lands in a woman's front yard. I turned the TV off and never watched this show again, lol X D

  • I would never forget the time my 1st grade teacher read this to us and I was completely terrified. Years later I tried to remember the name of the giant so I can look it up and FINALLY I got it.

  • Gotta admit, to this day, the shadowy figure of Abiyoyo blotting out the sun, and eating the sheep I find really ominous.
