There was a mama duck who frequented my backyard for the fresh water kiddie pool a few years back, many years back actually, and I let my puppy out one day, not realizing she was there at that time, all I heard was a "YIP!" and my pup running right back inside. The gull took this encounter too lightly. Under most conditions, a duck would not thwart a gull if the gull makes a more steath approach.  The gull is only breidly harrassed by the duck, and could easily make another and another pass.

yeah, momma ducks aren't afraid to go after other birds. I've seen it at millcreek too. Seagulls are my favorite animals so it does hurt and bother me to see them being beat up but that's mother nature working. :)

This was some incredible footage, caught on video. I've been in the avian field, for nearly 25yrs now, and this doesn't surprise me in the least. She viewed the Gull as a threat to her ducklings, and rightfully so. A gull would NOT hesistate, to gobble up one or two of her young, in a heartbeat...!!! Valiant effort, by the mamma duck, which looks to be either a black or mallard species. She caught the Gull "off guard", because it was clearly interested in the bread being thrown, not her chicks.

Feeding bread or other processed human food can kill ducks and ducklings. The bread can choke the ducks, especially the ducklings due to impacted crop. Also yeast is the worse for birds in general.

this was a set up, since both the duck and gull will accept food presented to them from humans. It's hard to say whether the duck is protecting it's young, or protecting the food source so the young can feed. There is laughing in the video, but to the gull and duck, this is serious business.
