  • Is that Nini from "Moulin Rouge"? :D

  • @Timamalao yes it is - caroline o'connor - having worked with her i can also say she is a star

  • @livelonglovemuch Coool!!! :)

  • Caroline is fantastic in this role. Never saw Peters' portrayal.

  • is this 1995?

  • my god does howard have a diaphram?

  • Boy, Howard McGillin is dull.

  • Love Caroline O'Connor!

  • I looooove this show! I never get tired of hearing the cd... It is real treat to see it performed! Thanks sooo much for posting! I cannot believe it either that I found MAck and Mabel either!!

  • My god the voices! Magnificent...

  • This is one of theaters greatest shows! Thank you Jerry Herman! Genius!

  • I saw him in London and fell in love with this musical

  • He is awesome!! That voice!!

  • @007esq : I agree. Better than Robert Preston, who did the role originally.

  • I love this particular cast, how terrific that this performance was recorded, even if condensed. Thanks for putting this up!

  • I would love to see footage of the original version with Bernadette Peters... Does anyone know if that even exists?

  • Ah lovely memories!

My dad was William Desmond Taylor in this. 1995 was the best year of my childhood because of this show :]

  • movies were movies when i ran the show

  • she's like the real Mabel Normand...check wikipedia!

  • wow!

  • put a sock in it!

  • i'm doing this show at the moment it's brill grate music

  • Really excellent, but I am still haunted by the slightly tougher and certainly lower 'talk sing' voice of the late great Robert Preston. I understand that one one of the original problems in it's transfer to Broadway in the mid seventies was that he was considered 'too old' to play opposite Mabel

  • thrilling. I saw him in "She Loves Me" and "Anything Goes" and he's been my favorite ever since. Thanks for posting.

  • wow i didn't know caroline o'connor did the royal variety, i love her she is awesome and a true performer

  • Yeah. I think they transposed it way up for this guy. "I Won't Send Roses" doesn't go up higher than a D. This guy's holding F sharps.

  • It's weird. This guy is a tenor. Isn't the part of Mack written for a bass? Robert Preston was a bass, I a think...

  • Mack Sennet was a bass in real life but the show character is Baritone.

  • Well, just looking at the sheet music for "I Won't Send Roses," it has low Gs everywhere.

  • Sure, firstly the classical Baritone vocal range is typically A - F with a little flexibility either way. A tone lower would not be enough to class the vocal range as a classical bass. A modern (post 1970) musical theatre Baritone would have a range of Low F/G - G/A or beyond if you're a 'lyrical baritone'. Originally Jerry Hermann wrote and cast the part as a baritone, but of course you may find a Bass or Bass/Baritone with an unusual range.

  • If most of Mack's tessitura is in keeping with "I Won't Send Roses" (original version, of course), then a bass wouldn't have any more trouble with the part than a regular baritone. From a song sample I heard, he goes up to an E-flat in "I wanna make the world laugh," but Robert Preston didn't have a particularly strong higher register.

Also, in many cases in opera, there's some overlap between "baritone" and "bass," particularly in Mozart. Granted, he was just really fond of high notes.

  • Agree - the voice classifications are only useful as a guide and I've never found anyone with a comfortable range that only fits the dictionary defination of Soprano,Alto, Tenor etc... As Mack's part actually goes to F and F# (albeit briefly) I guess the publishers would err on the side of caution and classify it as a Baritone.

  • Where does he go to an F#? He goes up that high in this version, but does he in the original version? I'm aware Robert Preston didn't have the strongest upper register, and from the samples on Amazon, I only heard it go as high as an E-flat in "I Wanna Make the World Laugh."

If he does go that high, then he would be a baritone.

  • "Hundreds of Girls", there's a few F's throughout and the F Sharps come in the last verse (that mack sings solo) after the umteenth key change. As for it being in the original - I don't honestly know as I only have my conductor score of the 1998 Broadway revivial and the current UK conductor's score. The notes could be ommitted through 'heightened speech'

  • There should be a "tag" for the actor playing Mack: he's Howard McGillen, currently the longest running "PHantom" on broadway...

  • I saw this cast in London that year. Very impressive performances.

  • This isn't the London Cast from 2007 - they're about 10 years earlier.

  • Yes, It's about 1995. I saw it while at Uni.

  • george does it better.

  • you know, he looks more like the real Mack Sennet than either George Hearn or Robert Preston. Also, Sennet was born in Canada, and so his early upbringing would have stifled the midwestern accents the the latter two actors gave the charatcre. Even Dan Akroyd had a midwestern accent. I'm sorry to be a perfectionist, but I'm a movie addict...espescially silents.

  • What year was this? I remember watching this when it was broadcasted, but can't for the life of me remember the year! Caroline O'Connor is simply fantastic!!! Thanks a stack for posting this!!! brings back so many memories!

  • I do believe it is 1995!

  • Is the first girl to sing Nini long legs in Moulin Rouge?

(first time viewer, please excuse my ignorance)

  • She features prodaminately in that scene!

I think U R correct anyways a GREAT lady and performer!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Yes Caroline is a FAB Aussie Caberet performer.

  • I saw this show in Washington DC with Bernadette Peters and Robert Preston and have never forgotten it. Thank you so much for posting this. It actually brought tears to my eyes watching it.

  • "I saw this show in Washington DC with Bernadette Peters and Robert Preston..."

    Gee whiz, you're lucky!

  • I saw it in LA also with the original cast. Peters was particularly wonderful and Preston's acting (especially in the ending) was very moving. I also clearly remember Lisa Kirk belting out "Tap Your Troubles Away". Jerry Herman still considers this his favorite score of his shows.

  • I'm SO happy that this fabulous show is getting the recognition that it deserves - at last!

  • is that the girl from moulin rouge?

  • Yes, she is Caroline O'Connor

  • Howard McGillin is amazing!!!! Where have they been hiding him? He doesn't need to send me Roses, just sing.... what a voice!!!!

    Thank you for posting this...

  • Yes, Howard is amazing. They've hardly been hiding him, though. He's been starring as the Phantom on Broadway for years now. (In fact, he's the actor who's performed the role the most times, worldwide.)

  • This is great. Thank you. I wish I had been there live.

  • Thank you, thank you thank you. This is great Thanks again

  • where can i download the soundtrack?

  • I can't believe I'm finding Mack & Mabel things here. My faith in the world has been revived!

  • George Hearn is great in "Jerry Herman's Broadway". He sang "Movies were Movies"

  • It's Howard, as dreamy and delicious as ever. His voice is terrific.

  • Is that Howard McGillin?

  • I was hoping Bernadette would be Mabel. I've never heard of Caroline O'Connor =x She's really good! I'm glad i found this.

  • What a treat.
