Les always carries a multi tool, like a gerber one. I wonder if one had to make a choice between a big knife....a Multitool....a Swiss army knife which is optimal and why?
Hi guys, I was wondering why it has to be TARRED bankline? I was sending Dave a message, but didn't get a message so far - so I hope somebody here knows! Thanks and take care
@pumile0812 It is impervious to water, won't rot or weaken nearly as fast when wet. But both are pretty good to have, if I remember what Dave said correctly. It's been quite a while! Get the heavy stuff it's stranded and can be broken down into the separate strands the same as paracord or doubled for strength.
I did a mini pouch and I know it does not compare to a large carry by any means I hope you take it as a compliment that I went by your guidelines you are one of the guys I look to for knowledge and learning but I created a small pouch just for going out scouting with your 10 c's in mind. I will add it as a video response
@randomgamerz360 ...Well I don't know what to tell you about the plane scenario, but I do know for a fact that if you happen to be on an Italian cruise ship, you won't need any of this shit as long as you stay close to the captain and are able to haul ass and jump in a life boat along with him....OHHHHHH, HEY TONY, FUGGEDDABOUTIT!!!!!!!!!
My plastic bottles flex enough to freeze full and not leak after they thaw, my metal bottles always blow the bottom out or crack if they freeze full, just saying.
Excellent video. Concise and informative. I'm planning on coming up to the pathfinder school sooner or later and have no doubt with instructors like you it will be well worthit.

Dave, thanks fore the videos. Great info. I think a lot of people could benefit from the 5 Cs of Survivability. It is a simple approach. It is easy to over complicate it.
Great videos. I'm in the great wilderness of the NYC area. However, we get out into the country as often as we can. Your videos are great learning tools that serve as a guide for performing possible activities safely. Thanks!
lol I haven't watched this in a month, lol i'm going to try and recall the 5 C's as a test. Cutting tool, container (tins are best so you can boil water. if you need), covering fabric, a flint thingy, oh yeah, combustion tool, lol cant remember the other one... lets see how I did; lol Metal is the best containment, and I forgot Cords, not too bad I think I'm going to do it next month maby
I remember back when you made the first of these videos and how this in essence your trade secret so I know how much this means to you. THANK YOU for sharing these, really well presented!
Dear Dave, im sorry for my bad english but thats becouse im from Finland. I love all the information you have given me. I have admired your work for long time now. I have lived in a ranch for my hole life and i started scouting these woods when i was a toddler. I know these woods better then my home and i hunt a lot with my dad. I hunt small game but a month ago my dad came back from afghanistan and we got me bear traps as a present for my 17 birtday. Keep up the good work. Good hunting.
I wish Dual survival would have a few episodes on you just using these items in a survival situation. That would be awesome.
Or maybe you could do a survival scenario trip with just this stuff in? Anyway, great stuff Dave, really appreciate you not letting the fame go to your head and continuing to make vids for your subscribers!
Dave, great vids. One question. What is the brand and type of overshirt you wear in most of the dual survival shows? Recently saw it in the Hippo Island show. The khaki colored shirt?
@wildernessoutfitters Many thanks Dave. Just ordered one. Going to try it out (along with some other gear) on my first overnight out in about 10 years. Headed for Smokey Mountain area. Keep up the great work.
I have that same blanket and love it, in fact over memorial day weekend i took it up to the Adirondacks with me and found out exactly how flame resistant it was when my friend over did it with fire lol
Mr. Canterbury I'm watching your videos for over a year now and you have a uniqe style to teach survival skills. You deserve your own tv show! Thank you for your spirit to go out and do all that stuff and try it out with honest reports if things don't work out or are a good success. I hope you'll go on just like this!
I first started following you on youtube and discovery channel you are the best instructor I have run across as a Vet I have had many Army Instructors you are among those elite. You will be credited with saving many lives, if they follow your instructions!
****Hey Dave, if Discovery wants you to start making additional videos for them, tell them to buy you a "pop stoper", or buy you a camera that will block out the wind. LOL Just saying brother =D****
@caleb4utube bank line is less bulky and still breaks down into 3 smaller lines...you could always stuff 30ft of paracord down the bank line tube inner,,weighs grams but increases your capability...
@caleb4utube Bank line is thinner and easier to do stuff with than paracord just take both its better also bankline you can carry more than paracord :/
dave man,in your book do you have plants that can be useful for medication,to eat and what plants that are dangerous, when i use to go moral hunting in sw wisconsin i use to eat honeysuckles,i always brought canteen filled with spring water, granola bars, hiking stick.
Great primer material for folks who are new to wilderness survival. I'm certain many people never considered such things until they came across shows like Dual Survival, Survivorman, etc.
Dave, I know your not going to upload old vids but do you think you could remake them? P.S. I'v been fan for a long time and think your vids are some of the best out there!
Dave...I know that discovery will probably offer you a series by yourself after dual survival...but no matter how famous you get, please still post videos for us,for people like me it gives me something to look foward to.
@MrJmunn well cody and dave are so different in many ways that it makes it interesting for them to show what it takes to survive so i dont think that would happen.
Great info you've got on this vid, but so far I've only got just one which is a good knife I've got plenty of those, but I can't even seem to find anywhere that has an Italian army wool blanket.
I'm really glad that you started this video's again. I really enjoyed all the old videos but then discovery made you stop and I was a bit pissed. Thanks for all the good info.
You say the bank line in the video is 165lbs, but on your site there are only two types - 340lbs and 106lbs. Also, you say in the video it has 3 fibers but that is nowhere mentioned on your site. Can you please clarify because I want to buy it. Good job on the video, btw.

@wildernessoutfitters I've been searching online for a military surplus Italian blanket, especially one like you show in this video that is so large (66" x 90"). Unfortunately, a lot of on-line suppliers seem to be out of stock right now. Any suggestions?
@wildernessoutfitters Dave, I've been searching online for a military surplus Italian blanket, especially like the one you have in this video that is so large (66" x 90"). Unfortunately, a lot of on-line suppliers seem to be out of stock right now. Any suggestions?
Agree with you a thousand percent Dave and I've used the 5 C's as the foundation for all my kits. I also have the same Guyout Design bottle and if I'm not mistaken it's a 38oz not a 32oz. bottle. I prefer this one over the 32oz one because I can nest it in a cup very easily.
i really wish we had the army surplus stores like we used to- most of them are just regular stores and not army surplus and you have to get all the practical stuff online unless you live near a military base that has a good army navy store
love it man love the show your making survival into all most a fad for those not survival orientated very well could save a lot of lives just off that factor alone keep up the great work!!!
Man!! just had to buy a wool blanket after watching your review. thanks for the informative reviews of the 5'c.I would take a bigger blade with me like a Kukri or Chris Cain Survial tool, small blade is harder work in the bush. However love the new series of DS and keep doing what you love doing bro....
@wildernessoutfitters Did you noticed, that when you talk to us (long time subscriber prior discovery) you talk slower, you're calm and it feels like you speaking with your friends. And when talk to facebook you are the tough guy from that tv show. Or just I feel that way?
Anyway love the show big time, but in the same time I miss your daily videos from your personal place.
I've been looking for a good metal water storage container with a big lid like you use. I can't seem to find one like it. They all have a small opening on them at academy sports and places like that. Hopefully I'll find one soon. Take care buddy.
I have a friend that always says he doesn't approve of shows like Dual Survival because it makes people afraid to go out and do stuff in the wilderness. I, however, find I learn something new all the time. I frequently go out for long distance hiking trips, so I like hearing your ideas of the basics and they make me a little less afraid (I will admit to getting scared when I am running low on food or water). You don't need a panic button device, though! Thanks for all the hard work.
One of the best videos I've seen on the basics, you must have had to say all that quickly in under 5 minutes for the Discovery Channel. I always love time honored wool blanket.
@wildernessoutfitters if needed to have a smaller line couldn't you use 1 of the 7 strands from the para-cord?? each strand is 35lb. test and the sheath is 300lb. test. i understand that its really all personal preference, i was mainly just throwing it out there and making sure my thought process wasn't to off track.
Dave, as usual, another outstanding vid. Looking forward to the second part. Thank you again for sharing with all of us. Your travel kit and 10 piece emergency kit vids are such a valuable reference too.
I love your videos Dave, your an extremely interesting and entertaining person to sit and watch and learn from. I could listen to you talk for hours. You have a way of explaining things in a way for me that is so easy to understand. Please keep the videos coming brother. I wish you & your family the best.
This is some good stuff. The one that really hit home with me was the combustion device. I always have a flint and steel with me, but I can attest that it would take a significant amount more work than that would. I don't mind, I just do it for fun anyways but I may need to look in to getting one of those.
hey dave love ur show and vids, i love how u keep the show entertaining and edjucational, im only 13 but u r my idol, do u have any advice for me, my goal in life is to own a succsesful survival school, and youtube channel, my youtube channel now is THElasvegasHUNTER, this one is my reptile channel. so if u have any advice it would be ver helpful. my about me is a mini survival guide too. have fun and be safe Skye
Lovin' these videos, dude! I like how you talk not only about WHAT to carry, but the philosophy and ideas behind WHY.

Take care Bro!

LivingHistorySchool 8 months ago
@wildernessoutfitters if needed to have a smaller line couldn't you use 1 of the 7 strands from the para-cord?? each strand is 35lb. test and the sheath is 300lb. test. i understand that its really all personal preference, i was mainly just throwing it out there and making sure my thought process wasn't to off track.
