It was originally recorden by the Top Notes. The Isley brothers then covered it, and THEN the Beatles covered it. After that the Mamas & the Papas, Brian Poole & the Tremeloes and Chaka Demus & Pliers covered it. I think the Who also covered it.
Anyone who knows me knows Im a huge Beatles fan, but I got to say Ive always prefered The Isley Brothers version. They rocked the shit out of it when they sang Twist and Shout, and it lost some of its edge when the Beatles did it.
Here's the deal: when a white group covered a black artist's sound when the record was new, that was an immoral way of keeping the black artist's recording off of the charts.
But the Beatles recorded Twist & Shout long after it was a hit for the Isley Brothers. The Isley Brothers did not record the first version of the song - it was originally recorded by the TopNotes (and produced by Phil Spector.)
No point arguing over Lennon or Isley - they're both great versions.
Message to zoetmb yeah! the beatles said ''lets do twist n shout''. ''i don't think blacks should have a hit record''. Im sure they put that much thought into it! There is you dumb deal moron!! Why has EVERYTHING have to do with black and white?!?!?!?!
You completely missed my point, which makes you the moron. I was stating that the Beatles version was legitimate because the purpose of it was NOT to push the Isleys off of the charts, since it was recorded much later AND because the Isley's version was not even the first version of the record.
And if you knew ANYTHING about the history of rock and roll or the history of music radio, you'd know that a lot of it (not all of it) was about black vs. white.
true true.... people don't realize that all music originates from a different sound. Country originated from Bluegrass, Bluegrass originated from Gospel. or at least I think.... But back in the day of 50's 60's rock is now soft rock....and ACDC and Led Zepplin, and all the other groups, is considered Rock. very much agree with ya..
steal.....hmmm....so now days when a writer takes another song and adds his own lil tweaks and peaks to that particular song....is that stealing? actually no. the only way it would actually be called stealing, is if they took that song and sang as his own, and not give the credit to originater. but you know their are laws against that stuff. even back in the day of the Beatles.

well if that is the case, cincinatti being a city, then Liverpool was a "hood" of sorts...

Holy shit, John Lennons play list? this is such a piece of evidence for a social inquiry not into his mind--but truly a reflection of what beatles fans love without even knowing it!
no it didn't. A)charles manson was already crazy, *he* thought helter skelter was about race wars and crap so its not the songs problem (helter skelter was about a slide anyway). B) John and hateable do not belong in the same sentencehe was loveable and beyond that just because you don't like someone doesn't give you the right to call them hateable and why would you hate John at all? C) you're a sad person.
haha such ignorant fools!! Ain't it about time you step out your cerebral prison!! Funny how you enjoy the type of music that opposed your total way of thinking.
No way!! Ronald Isley is far better singer than John Lennon could ever dream of being!! Far more range. John does his best to copy Isley's gospel drenched vocals. Ronald has more soul in his toenail than Lennon had in his entire body. John okay with pop, but soul was way out of his range.
Isley Brother's Twist and Shout reminds me of being at the River Park Marina in 1962, after we moved here, and went to dances and movie nights. Love it!
Even though I was born in 91', I still think listening to anything from Nas and Jay-Z, to Jesse McCartney and Lifehouse is nothing compared to this. My grandmother told me about the good old days in the 50's and I wish I had a chance to experience it!
Yes! finally someone has some sense. Have any of you listened to top 40 radio in the past oh I don't know, 6 to 7 years? The question of discussion should be is, why can't T&S be made today (and to a larger extent, any Isley Brothers or Beatles songs from this time period)when dance songs with lyrics like "my hoes say I'm amazing but I don't listen to a lady" or "shawty wanna lick me like a lollipop" are the standard not "now shake it up baby, twist and shout...and let me know that you're mine".
Man sometimes those white people (no offence) talk not in needed?! What are you on man! I'm black and you think calling me black offends me? You have no idea!! The best music is by black people (no offence!!!!!!!!!).
I feel what the Beatgles did is hard to pull off. Merging rock/pop/progressive elements with their melodic sense has been proven hard to duplicate. The Beatles basically invented many forms of Modern Music just with "Tomorrow Never Knows". I mean even Public Enemy copied that song or paid tribute to that songs.
Please don't compare Elvis to the Beatles. The Beatles wrote their music and they have been covered by numerous black musicians
repeated syncopated percussion has long been a major component of Black music dating back to Africa. Max Roach was doing this while Ringo was in diapers. Pierre Schaffer and Pierre Henri were the 1st to do sampling and looping of taped music. The Beatles popularized these approaches with the mainstream. Musically Elvis not in category of Beatles or Isleys. I was speaking in terms of mainstream acceptance.
I easily agree with you the Beatles were influenced by black musicians. I never said the Beatles invented sampling and looping. The Beatles combined sampling, looping, repeated syncopated beat, drone, processed vocals and backward music on "Tomorrow Never Knows". It influenced hordes of musicians.
Also "Strawberry Fields Forever" has drum loops. These innovations for pop music done by the Beatles first not James Brown.
I am just annoyed the Beatles are being lumped with Elvis.
I am a musician I certainly respect what Black Musicians have done influencing the Beatles. Rubber Soul many people think it was just a folk rock album but the title was making fun of how plastic they thought on how British Blues artists take on the blues.
I am only commenting because the Beatles are being lumped with Elvis. If you ever heard the Beatles Revolver or Sgt Pepper it's more of a fusion of Indian Music and Avant Music that it is blues.
man the isleys are legends they influenced the beatles. many of the british rock from thoes days were spinoff from the blues. nobody was sounding like frank sinatra in the early 60's they were sounding like howlin wolf, james brown, and muddy waters, ect. and many of there singles were covered by white artist so it can sell outside the black community..also many black artist weren't even allowed to have there picture on the cover of their own album so it can sell to whites.
of course they covered the isley style..cause the isleys made the song a hit...but it dosent mean they stole it...artist been covering other artist songs for years. was it an attempt to crossover having a white band to cover a song sung by a black group?...yup! but I not like the beatles had to asked the lsleys for permission to cover the song. plus the isleys are making more than enough residuals off of hip hop and others covering their music.
it wasn't a different song...it wasn't sang with the gospel intentions as the isley brothers...the same song writers are listed in the credits of the song. my question is everyone saying that the beatles stole the song from the isley brothers, but the isleys weren't the original singers of the song..they covered it too.
yes and the vocal by lennon is so much better, it has so much soul and the hardest sound he achieved in the early days, there's so much passion in the vocals and the song is really hard rock for his time while the isleys just made an average song that was nothin' special, and the greatest differnece is that when the beatles do something everyone tries to do this but the isleys never had that much of an influence.
Only thing Lennon does is try in vain to recreate Ronald's gospel sound, something he could never do. Lennon is nowhere near in the same class as Ronald vocally. Beatles good pop singers, very mediocre soul/r&b singers. The Isleys have been relevant since 1959 when they released "Shout". And have charted new music as recently as 06. Very few have been as diverse as Isleys with their sound and even fewer as successful in their diversity. If they were white they would get props they deserve.
don't come with the old black argument, hendrix is regarded the best guitar player, chuck berry and little richard on one level with elvis in the ivention of rock, don't let us talk about the best blues guitar players like bb king, today it makes no difference, to be black don't mean anything today when it goes about respect from the critics and fans.
ok what year did the topnotes sing this song?...and what year did the isley brothers sing this song?....if the topnotes sang this song first then everyone is wasting their time arguing over this...im not sure but the topnotes weren't black.
no man the beatles made the song sooo much better, the isley brothers version is just to slow and unrock, the beatles made the song to one of the hardest rockers in the time of it's release.
be real, man the beatles are the greatest music since bach and mozart and the isleys where just a good band but without them we would probably have some covers of their songs not in exisetence but without what the beatles did we would have absolutely nothing what we have today.
Please, since Mozart and Bach? Do you know anything about Duke Ellington, Art Tatum, Charles Mingus, Theolonius Monk, Horace Silver, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, etc.!? I acknowledge Beatles were exceptional songwriters, but very average musicians and singers.
Because they were such average singers and musicians, I only came to appreciate their music through covers by others, Let It Be - Aretha Franklin, Hey Jude - Wilson Pickett accompanied by Duane Allman, Eleanor Rigby - Kim Weston, And I love her - Bobby Womack.
Ernie Isley was the only one who played instrument on their albums and not one Beatle had his ability on the guitar. Isleys had huge part in the birth of soul and funk. Beatles played no part in creating new genre of music.
your isley guy never had the influence the lead guitar parts by george harrison had, and i like millions of others think he's better than ernie.
the beatles did created new genres and they pioneered every one of them, psychedelia, hard rock, tin pan alley in 60s music, concept albums.and i don't think that you will find someone who knows a shit about music who will tell you that the isleys were more influential, better songwriters or better artists than the beatles.
As I said mediocre musicians. As I said when it came to songwriting Beatles were exceptional, but for singing and live performance Isleys would wipe the floor with them.
the article about the quarrymen is as long as the one about the isley and the beatles have so much more in their article and i don't think you will find an artist that is not inspired by the beatles nowadays, even if he's inspired by a man who was inspired by them he's inspired by the beatles, and the isleys never achieved in almost 60 years of recording what the beatles achieved in only 8.
Beatles as was Elvis, a huge revolution for whites. There were many blacks who admired their music, but they did not have impact in black world like they did in white world. Because they shook up whites so much, it is assumed that everyone felt that way about them, not so. In a just world Isleys would be recognized for their many accomplishments.
and on instrument the beatles created the 60s sound with paul making the bass more prominent on records than before and showing how much power it has over the music, ringo making the drummer accepted as a full part of the band and george lead guitar on songs like day tripper or the solos he wrote for while my guitar gently weeps.
People (mostly white) tend to forget that Motown had become an independent powerhouse before Beatles and continued to do so long after they split. Another musical innovator who came of age in the sixties was James Brown. Listen to Brown's pre Poppa Got a Brand New bag stuff - "Think", Night Train, no band tighter than Famous Flames. At Motown James Jamerson had already revolutionized bass playing & Benny Benjamin did same with drums. And in jazz drummers had long been accepted as vital cog.
man the beatles are the most celeberated band of the century and the isley made some good stuff, but when looking what they did for music then the beatles win by miles from the earth to jupiter.
The Isley Bros, Cover of this song is Way Better than the Beatles Version, I still have it on Wand Records when it first came out,Flip Side Instrumental version "Spanish Twist. Great!
Disgraceful, such racist comments. The Beatles were clearly under the direction of their fantastic manager, the late, great, Brian Epstein, who also managed Cilla Black. Bacharach described Cilla as a white singer who sounded as though she was black, and who could convey that black sound. Cilla had the British No. 1 with 'Anyone Who Had A Heart' and Bacharach gave her 'Alfie' as well as other songs to record. Still there is jealousy with some arguing between Cilla and Warwick.

heronest1985, beatles didnt steal it,they COVERED it.
and actually this song is NOT even written or created by The Isley Brothers.this song is written by Bert Russel for a group called The Topnotes, and then The Isley Brothers COVERED it, and then the beatles covered it too.
so both beatles and isley brothers covered this song.
How many times have black artists covered Beatle songs? The Beatles are probably the most covered white artist by black musicians. The list is endless everyone from Ray Charles to Jimi Hendrix have covered Beatles songs. The Beatles covered "Twist and Shout" and made it a rock classic. The two versions are night and day. The Isleys version sounds tame and the Beatles version just pounds hard for it's time. The Beatles made the better version

The Gray Album was Jay Z' Black Album mixed with The White Album. Lastly, The Supremes were known as "The Girl Beatles", The Four Tops as "The Black Beatles" and Billy Preston was their keyboardist was is referred to/considered as the "Fifth" Beatle even more than Stuart Sutcliffe (origional bassist) and Pete Best (origional drummer).
Yeah...thats for all the haters out there. Thanks perljamtec for bringing that point up.
I actually wasn't going to include it in the list of examples because it is a Harrison solo but my point was showing songs black artists covered that were either Beatle songs or Beatle 'related'; in this case George was a Beatle (same thing why I included Imagine).
perljamtec, the difference is that it is acknowledged as a Beatles original or whoever the white artist is, while many times the black creator is often conveniently forgotten.
The Isley Brothers did not write the song. I am the first to admit the Beatles were influenced by the Isley Brothers. You listened to the Beatles version though it much of harder rock sound.
Whats the point in the end everyone took from the Beatles. "Tomorrow Never Knows" electronic music, sampling, backward and forward music and odd drum beats is heard from everything Hip-Hop to techno.
If it weren't for both black *and* white (American) music, there were be no Beatles as they are known today. They were were influenced by both black and white styles and if you actually *listen* to their music instead of always trying to pick at them for whatever, then you would hear it. And the fact that they were really one of the few white bands who respected black music enough to "do" it whether covering or infusing it, says a lot and you have to give them that credit.
I stand by what I said, if not for the rocking polyrhythm blacks brought to American music, there would be no R&R. The music Black musicians were doing in forties to early fifties, Louis Jordan, Roy Brown, Wynonnie Harris, Howling Wolf, Muddy Waters, Arthur "Bigboy" Crudup, Amos Milburn, Hank Ballard, The Clovers, Ruth Brown,
Johnny Guitar Watson, etc., was obviously the predecessor to what became known as R&R.
And I agree with everything you wrote, its true and you are correct. But R&R was not just created by one group and their music, country & western music also helped create and influence the genre as well. Blues and R&B aren't just the only factors that helped create R&R although they are certainly significant. The Clovers are just as important to R&R as Buddy Holly is.
I am big fan of traditional country music myself- Johnny Cash, George Jones, Patsy Cline. What I admire about it- It used other influences, blues, traditional Irish/Scott/English music & gospel, but came up with a sound that was stamped with the unique sound of the southern whites who created it. Same with Beatles, once they came out of their cover period they created an original and unique sound. But these early covers merely mimics of originals.
Max Roach - 1st to pioneer odd time drumming, Pierre Schaffer & Pierre Henry cut & spliced taped music in 40s, also Jamaican djs early example of sampling with dub, John Gage and Sun Ra pioneered electronic music while Beatles in diapers. Beatles first I know of to backmask.

John's vocals are 10 times better though
wwefanx3 3 years ago 2
No way!! Ronald Isley is far better singer than John Lennon could ever dream of being!! Far more range. John does his best to copy Isley's gospel drenched vocals. Ronald has more soul in his toenail than Lennon had in his entire body. John okay with pop, but soul was way out of his range.

Makes me sick how The Beatles covered this song poorly. So stiff and souless. Long live the Isley Brothers.

The Beatles wrote their music and they have been covered by numerous black musicians
perljamtec 3 years ago 3
repeated syncopated percussion has long been a major component of Black music dating back to Africa. Max Roach was doing this while Ringo was in diapers. Pierre Schaffer and Pierre Henri were the 1st to do sampling and looping of taped music. The Beatles popularized these approaches with the mainstream. Musically Elvis not in category of Beatles or Isleys. I was speaking in terms of mainstream acceptance.
luvureally 3 years ago
I easily agree with you the Beatles were influenced by black musicians. I never said the Beatles invented sampling and looping. The Beatles combined sampling, looping, repeated syncopated beat, drone, processed vocals and backward music on "Tomorrow Never Knows". It influenced hordes of musicians.
Also "Strawberry Fields Forever" has drum loops. These innovations for pop music done by the Beatles first not James Brown.
I am just annoyed the Beatles are being lumped with Elvis.
perljamtec 3 years ago
I am a musician I certainly respect what Black Musicians have done influencing the Beatles. Rubber Soul many people think it was just a folk rock album but the title was making fun of how plastic they thought on how British Blues artists take on the blues.
I am only commenting because the Beatles are being lumped with Elvis. If you ever heard the Beatles Revolver or Sgt Pepper it's more of a fusion of Indian Music and Avant Music that it is blues.

man the isleys are legends they influenced the beatles. many of the british rock from thoes days were spinoff from the blues. nobody was sounding like frank sinatra in the early 60's they were sounding like howlin wolf, james brown, and muddy waters, ect. and many of there singles were covered by white artist so it can sell outside the black community..also many black artist weren't even allowed to have there picture on the cover of their own album so it can sell to whites.
kendre3 3 years ago
of course they covered the isley style..cause the isleys made the song a hit...but it dosent mean they stole it...artist been covering other artist songs for years. was it an attempt to crossover having a white band to cover a song sung by a black group?...yup! but I not like the beatles had to asked the lsleys for permission to cover the song. plus the isleys are making more than enough residuals off of hip hop and others covering their music.
kendre3 3 years ago
it wasn't a different song...it wasn't sang with the gospel intentions as the isley brothers...the same song writers are listed in the credits of the song. my question is everyone saying that the beatles stole the song from the isley brothers, but the isleys weren't the original singers of the song..they covered it too.
kendre3 3 years ago 2
but Beatles copies Isley's cover, not original by topnotes.
luvureally 3 years ago
yes and the vocal by lennon is so much better, it has so much soul and the hardest sound he achieved in the early days, there's so much passion in the vocals and the song is really hard rock for his time while the isleys just made an average song that was nothin' special, and the greatest differnece is that when the beatles do something everyone tries to do this but the isleys never had that much of an influence.
OropherThranduil 3 years ago
Only thing Lennon does is try in vain to recreate Ronald's gospel sound, something he could never do. Lennon is nowhere near in the same class as Ronald vocally. Beatles good pop singers, very mediocre soul/r&b singers. The Isleys have been relevant since 1959 when they released "Shout". And have charted new music as recently as 06. Very few have been as diverse as Isleys with their sound and even fewer as successful in their diversity. If they were white they would get props they deserve.
luvureally 3 years ago
don't come with the old black argument, hendrix is regarded the best guitar player, chuck berry and little richard on one level with elvis in the ivention of rock, don't let us talk about the best blues guitar players like bb king, today it makes no difference, to be black don't mean anything today when it goes about respect from the critics and fans.
OropherThranduil 3 years ago
ok what year did the topnotes sing this song?...and what year did the isley brothers sing this song?....if the topnotes sang this song first then everyone is wasting their time arguing over this...im not sure but the topnotes weren't black.

they copied all the whooos and ahhhs the Isleys used. Same arrangement. same tempo. Some of u Beatles fans are in big denial.
luvureally 3 years ago
be real, man the beatles are the greatest music since bach and mozart and the isleys where just a good band but without them we would probably have some covers of their songs not in exisetence but without what the beatles did we would have absolutely nothing what we have today.
OropherThranduil 3 years ago
Please, since Mozart and Bach? Do you know anything about Duke Ellington, Art Tatum, Charles Mingus, Theolonius Monk, Horace Silver, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, etc.!? I acknowledge Beatles were exceptional songwriters, but very average musicians and singers.
luvureally 3 years ago
Because they were such average singers and musicians, I only came to appreciate their music through covers by others, Let It Be - Aretha Franklin, Hey Jude - Wilson Pickett accompanied by Duane Allman, Eleanor Rigby - Kim Weston, And I love her - Bobby Womack.
luvureally 3 years ago
they were by many miles better musicians than the isleys, who could never have such an influence on the modern music scene.
isleys were good but the beatles put the pieces together and made the best music out there.
OropherThranduil 3 years ago
Ernie Isley was the only one who played instrument on their albums and not one Beatle had his ability on the guitar. Isleys had huge part in the birth of soul and funk. Beatles played no part in creating new genre of music.
luvureally 3 years ago
keep on dreamin' man,
your isley guy never had the influence the lead guitar parts by george harrison had, and i like millions of others think he's better than ernie.
the beatles did created new genres and they pioneered every one of them, psychedelia, hard rock, tin pan alley in 60s music, concept albums.and i don't think that you will find someone who knows a shit about music who will tell you that the isleys were more influential, better songwriters or better artists than the beatles.
OropherThranduil 3 years ago
As I said mediocre musicians. As I said when it came to songwriting Beatles were exceptional, but for singing and live performance Isleys would wipe the floor with them.
luvureally 3 years ago
sorry the message should have go on.
the article about the quarrymen is as long as the one about the isley and the beatles have so much more in their article and i don't think you will find an artist that is not inspired by the beatles nowadays, even if he's inspired by a man who was inspired by them he's inspired by the beatles, and the isleys never achieved in almost 60 years of recording what the beatles achieved in only 8.
OropherThranduil 3 years ago
Beatles as was Elvis, a huge revolution for whites. There were many blacks who admired their music, but they did not have impact in black world like they did in white world. Because they shook up whites so much, it is assumed that everyone felt that way about them, not so. In a just world Isleys would be recognized for their many accomplishments.
luvureally 3 years ago
and on instrument the beatles created the 60s sound with paul making the bass more prominent on records than before and showing how much power it has over the music, ringo making the drummer accepted as a full part of the band and george lead guitar on songs like day tripper or the solos he wrote for while my guitar gently weeps.
without the beatles music today would be a shit.
OropherThranduil 3 years ago

Still there is jealousy with some arguing between Cilla and Warwick.

heronest1985, beatles didnt steal it,they COVERED it.
and actually this song is NOT even written or created by The Isley Brothers.this song is written by Bert Russel for a group called The Topnotes, and then The Isley Brothers COVERED it, and then the beatles covered it too.
so both beatles and isley brothers covered this song.
and i like beatles version better anyway

"Tomorrow Never Knows" electronic music, sampling, backward and forward music and odd drum beats is heard from everything Hip-Hop to techno.
perljamtec 3 years ago
point really is if not for black american music, would be no beatles as they are known today. their music would be something very different.
luvureally 3 years ago
Correction:
If it weren't for both black *and* white (American) music, there were be no Beatles as they are known today. They were were influenced by both black and white styles and if you actually *listen* to their music instead of always trying to pick at them for whatever, then you would hear it. And the fact that they were really one of the few white bands who respected black music enough to "do" it whether covering or infusing it, says a lot and you have to give them that credit.
1940semochild 3 years ago
I stand by what I said, if not for the rocking polyrhythm blacks brought to American music, there would be no R&R. The music Black musicians were doing in forties to early fifties, Louis Jordan, Roy Brown, Wynonnie Harris, Howling Wolf, Muddy Waters, Arthur "Bigboy" Crudup, Amos Milburn, Hank Ballard, The Clovers, Ruth Brown,
Johnny Guitar Watson, etc., was obviously the predecessor to what became known as R&R.
luvureally 3 years ago
And I agree with everything you wrote, its true and you are correct. But R&R was not just created by one group and their music, country & western music also helped create and influence the genre as well. Blues and R&B aren't just the only factors that helped create R&R although they are certainly significant. The Clovers are just as important to R&R as Buddy Holly is.
1940semochild 3 years ago
I am big fan of traditional country music myself- Johnny Cash, George Jones, Patsy Cline. What I admire about it- It used other influences, blues, traditional Irish/Scott/English music & gospel, but came up with a sound that was stamped with the unique sound of the southern whites who created it. Same with Beatles, once they came out of their cover period they created an original and unique sound. But these early covers merely mimics of originals.
luvureally 3 years ago
Max Roach - 1st to pioneer odd time drumming, Pierre Schaffer & Pierre Henry cut & spliced taped music in 40s, also Jamaican djs early example of sampling with dub, John Gage and Sun Ra pioneered electronic music while Beatles in diapers. Beatles first I know of to backmask.
