The reel has been ruined . too fast and lacking in it's own inherent nuances of colour and melody..a reel to be listened to carefully t a slow tempo....Sean Potts , Martin Hayes or Paddy Carty would never do this to the tune......
Tradition is humble, is governed by respect for itself, it unifies all it's diversities under one principle. Innovation is natural to he who is less interested in preservation, and consciously allows himself to mix all of his influences. They are both necessary, and have always coexisted. But tradition carries on and it's features remain more or less unchanged, whereas innovation has little space to be remembered, because it finds refuge in innovators alone. It is spontaneous by nature.
It was a nice piece of music/dance but i can see where Tony MacMahon is coming from with the sense of tradition drifting away from the source. Anyway that reel she's playing is called Julia Delaney's
Lovely piece on its own (a bit too lacking in focus for me though).
In any context of "innovation" though,I don't understand where or why it would fit. It's not so much that it's not irish (which I wouldn't really know) but that it's not "traditionnal" in the sense that all the european traditional arts are participatory (or at the least have a social meaning, such as sean nos singing, music for weddings, etc), and that's how they survive. What can be taken from this "innovation"?
Great Mike, this was a great video. It showed many forms of dancing, both traditional and modern, some even embodied parts of the Asian martial arts, with the opening stance of the crane though of course that is a sacred bird in many cultures, it was brilliant, I used to be a dancer, the fluidity of movement makes ones heart soar, thank you for sharing.
That must be the clip Tony McMahon was talking about. They innovated the traditional music right out of it, sure there is a familiar 'air' to it, but its not trad..
Its really not even that nice to listen to! The last time I saw Ivers play, people were calling it something like afrocelt. or something crazy like that. As for the dancing....
