I have to admit, Mario Lanza is better, but Andrea is the the third greatest singer who ever lived, the second is enrico Caruso, and the fourth is Franco Corelli
Esta aria exala espiritualidade, e o Andrea conseguiu dar a esta aria a aparente tranquilidade que oculta o sofrimento do fundo da alma do personagem, perfeito como nunca antes.
This is an utter piece of shit! Notice how it's a lament! Where is the passion and anger it's all dolce bullshit this guy is a joke to all classical music and opera
@Buzaglod excuse me, with all do respect, what he is doing without he help of his eyes but his voice...he is opening the doors of opera to the regular public, that it self is a great feat, let alone sing infront of thousands. If however, you do sing better and to more people then i and everyone else here and there would at least expect a bit of humbleness.
At age 40, Boceilli was still singing in piano bars because he was blind. Had he had the chance to develop his voice in opera houses, no telling how great he could have become. As it is, this is a marvelous voice; full of color, a marvelous pianissimo, and yes, in need of some depth. But he brought more people to opera than anyone, anywhere, and I love his voice, heart and emotion. Bravo, Andrea: just keep singing.
Do people realise that this is over 10 years ago (1997) and that Bocelli<s voice has become so much more powerful as he got older, so stop telling him to stop singing opera based on this, he has done it 10 years more and he still sells more then any other!
one word : EMOTION!!! ya he doesnt' have The Lryic Voice, but hear this emotion... it's so incredible... noone can sing this aria like that with crystal voice without forcing....so it's not important your professional comments llike 'here he doesn't use his mouth...." blabla... so what??? stop boring with this!!
Personaly this is my fav version cause Bocelli's voices touches ur heard so him singing it makes is even more beautiful and emotional when he sings it comes derectly from his soul!
most pastors say that the more they preach the harder becomes for them to really listen and enjoy the preaching of other pastors, why? simple, as the pastor preaches they are thinking more of how they would say things and how so it sounds better rather then pay real atention and recieve the message being told. knowledge can sometimes blind us making us not able to enjoy what was meant to be a bless and to be enjoyed.. :P
i've heard this aria by bjorling, corelli, pavarotti, mario del monaco, di stefano, and m any other of the really experience opera and best voices of all times.
but i've never been so moved as much as this rendition i must admit. althogh bocelli doesnt have such a powerful voice, he sure makes it sound like a lament! why? cuz hes got an angelical voice, who cares about the technique when you hear something that feeds your soul?
Anybody has heard Mario Lanza singing this aria?. It is a very dramatic Aria. Cilea (his author) dreamed in that way. It is not a matter to be angry by that. It is only the true.
Yeah, Lanza's is pretty incredible, even though it's a studio recording. Although it's a dramatic aria, the opera is actually a very light operetta-ish piece. Most dramatic/spinto singers do it just as a concert piece, but would never be cast in the actual role. Apparently it's supposed to be sung by a leggero. I think Bocelli sings it well for a pop piece. Kinda croony, but hell that's what he does and he does it great!!
I saw Bocelli in concert, very close to the stage. He was wonderful, his voice is like silk, it's food for the soul. His expression touches the heart.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
No note is higher? There are numerous works in which a tenor must work above a C5; 'I Puritani', for example, has F5's.
Bocelli doesn't have a strong voice. He is a novelty, much the same as potts. He swallows tone, doesn't possess even the most rudimentary knowledge of sound production, and relies on piano passages.
By the way, he obviously possesses little musicality as he not only disregards the triplet rhythm of the verse and all but ignores dynamic quality. A poor singer.
All I know is that I love listenning to his voice like millions of others. And that is all that matters to me and to them!
you may thing ,Bocelli is bad or is similer to Potts, which is so not true. Any person who compers Potts to Bocelli doesn't know anything about opera, I mean can potts hit a Hight note, has he preformed with as amazing people, has he sold as many albums.
not all tenors have a strong voice, why are you concerned about the microphone aid? swallows tone eh? he's recognized specially for his clear intonation, clearly you're not making any sense. sound production- do you mean this by a technical point of view or the musical side?
I merely state that he doesn't allow his voice to carry all the way to his sounding board. Take :45 for example he opens his mouth while singing the first note of "E S'addor mi" - this is a fault. He uses his jaw to form vowels and consonants - he should use his tongue on most.
These faults among others aside, he has a marvellous voice. I do feel that he is singing material that is not in his fach however. He should stay away from the heavier roles such as Canio in Pagliacci, which he murdered.
that explains more details. well, there are songs/arias that aren't so suitable to one's voice, no matter how great they may be, as vocal color plays a very crucial role as to what songs one's voice will be well-suitable with.
I've watched him live last may 2004, his singing and technique is very different from here, i can say he was at his prime that year, whereas now he ventured more into the pop side more.
What? Pavarotti is a real opera tenor. Bocelli is a pop singer trying to sing opera arias. He's not a real opera singer. Please, listen to Corelli, Björling, Domingo, Carreras, Pavarotti, Di Stefano, and many more...
I can't stand to listen to Carreras. He strains and shouts and was over shown by the three tenors. Bocelli sings from the heart and there is plenty of room for him. When and where ever he wants to sing...I'll be there. We can enjoy them all, but if you BOO him, you are a jerk, plain and simple
what a techinique to sing this song! others sing with power, bocelli really knows how to make it sound like a lament. the way he goes up and hi so softly and with such breath control!
yeah thats what i meant.. i was replaying to francocerri who was saying bocelli doesnt have volume or power to sing opera.... i've never heard a version more peaceful then this one.. what a performance
I never said Bocelli isn't a good singer, I like is musicality and heart. I'm just talking about his instrument. He hasn't got a voice to sing traditional opera in traditional theatres. Listen to Marcello Alvarez version or Pavarotti one. People loves Bocelli's way of singing without know opera world. In Italy when he sings in a theatre people say: "boooooooo"
Carolina, I was in Bologna and Milano when he sang Werther and Trovatore. People was disgusting about him, all say "booooo" at the end. Pavarotti is another world. Read articles about his performance in theatre.. Bocelli is just a commercial product. Ecxaly the same of paul pott.. another shit..
Trovatore doesn't suit Bocelli's lyric voice, I would like to hear him singing Boheme.
Yes, Pavarotti is another thing, but you can not say Bocelli is shit, 'cause he is not, he is in fact good at opera (not monster like Pav, Domingo, Gigli, etc) and the best of pop.
Yes, i've heard it, several times, also O soave fanciulla, but I meant I would like to listen to him on his stage opera in 1996. I think it was in Rome. I would really like to see it on dvd, or perhaps his Madame butterfly on Torre del Lago.
what in the world are you talking out? if ppl just say "booo" to him.. why do they keep asking him to sing? it doesnt make sence.. ok its true bocellis voice is too thin for most of the roles in opera, but he sings it perfectly! with a mocrophone ofcourse:) (like this performance) he sounds amazing
You have my middle name...I agree! I've listened to Bocelli singing this and have been enchanted by his perfect rendition. Those who criticize him must have tin ears.
lol well guess what? this song was made for a voice like his! you dont need any power at all for this song! you find the beauty on this song on the low registries and boceeli does it so good!
You are so right, luixander19! Andrea Bocelli has the perfect voice for a lament - so much feeling, the exquisite way he softens his voice for the saddest parts. You can just feel the despair, the pain by the way he phrases the song. Bravo!
I can't think of any other singer that can hold an open-air concert with an audience of thousands of people in pin-drop silence. He weaves his Magic, hypnotizing the audience. Going from a sweet delicacy of feeling, disbelief, and deep sorrow, to amazing power! All in the space of a single song! I love this man! Bocelli is wonderful!
Right on! There is lots of snobbery in opera and especially amongst the Italians. Bocelli has made us love his music by pure heart felt singing. Back in the days of the colliseum, perhaps a powerful voice would be important, but not today. I listen to Bocelli and all of the rest, but Andrea Bocelli moves souls.
Hi smartsteve, I am in complete agreement with you! And probably a few tens or hundreds of millions of other people around the World! :) Andrea Bocelli is a phenomenon. There is no other man that sings like him.

Can you tell me, please, the name of the DVD? I keep playing this again and again. I may as well just buy it. Everytime I listen, I am amazed at the range of emotions in this aria. He goes from great power or anger to softness, tenderness and tears... Wow!!!!
no me cabe la menor duda, que Federico se lamente, pero por la interpretación de Bocelli, ufff

I am not suprised to hear that he is not celebrated in Italy. He is a mere commercial product much like Sarah Brightman or Paul Potts.
I am in no way denegrating his musicality or voice; he just shouldn't sing Opera, operetta or anything that hints at a classical background.
