  • Oooo. Now I want to read this book again. I remember really loving this novel back when it came out.

  • I have brought up the Joy Luck Club on more than one occasion,i have noticed that only the bad cop hareas good people you never hear about a good cop.

  • amy tan is my favorite writer. i enjoy the way she tells her stories, i like the places she writes about and i love her characters. something in her style really clicks with me. the interviews online in various places just confirm how entertaining and imaginative she is.

but this stuff is always subjective. there are people i respect and/or am fond of who like books and authors i can't even stand. it's taste. some people don't like coconut. some people love it. we're all different.

  • This is a very good book, I enjoy reading it. I do realize there are stereotypes, but I like her STYLE of writing, aside from the stereotypes. How she describe things, and everything. I think, this is what makes a book, the style of writing.

  • Her childrens book The Moon Lady and Sagwa are great.I also seen The Joy Luck I don't know how many times.

  • her voice is adorable!!

  • @lemurs366 Right? I love her!

  • i started with "The Hundred Secret Senses", now i couldn't stop reading all her works. she takes me into worlds i could never imagine.

  • i love her voice!

  • It's a great book. Very educational as well. Her writing is very riveting.

  • i slayed amy tan

  • not my usual type of book but the reading turned into pure pleasure .

i have fallen for amy tan

  • kgfn

  • Saving Fish from Drowning is a GREAT book, as all of her books are. Very dark, too.

  • Shes alright. Anyone know things about her culture? or family values? hit me up with a message

  • ive read most of her books and i love her writing.

    she is chinese-american

  • check out her lecture on TED talks. fascinating!

  • amy tan is amazing!

  • I wish I could write like her. I would like to spend a day with her and ask her what inspires her.

  • wow

  • I must agree with you. This lady CANNOT write!

All throughout high school, people thought I was like the daughters in the book since I was ALSO a Chinese.

  • if she was a bad writer, she wouldn't be so famous. you must have bad taste in writing.. Consider it a compliment when people say you're like the daughters in her novels.

  • The people who think she can write DO NOT see the stereotypes embedded in her stories. That is why she is considered a "good writer"

Also, how the FUCK is that a compliment? That's like saying my life is miserable and shitty. The daughters are doormats to help the moms get their stories across. They are pathetic and represent the typical Asian. It's not a compliment at all; I find it offensive. That just goes to show how ignorant people think that ALL Chinese people are similar (stereotyping).

  • How many of Amy Tan's books have you read? -- and all of a sudden you know all the characters right? -- You need to check your sources and RE-THINK. Amy Tan's characters are realistic and strong, and SORRY if you choose to not help your mother during hard times. ---

AND quit putting down stereotyping if you're doing it yourself - "THEY ARE PATHETIC AND REPRESENT THE TYPICAL ASIAN" -- I'm sorry if you see asians this way but I, as an asian myself, disagree.

  • Do NOT assume that I "choose to not help your mother during hard times," because I do. You don't know me.

Also, do you KNOW what a stereotype is? How am I "doing it" myself? I'm sorry, but in no way do I see myself being "pathetic" or "represent the typical Asian." I don't, however, see the need to cap ALL the letters when I quote something.

  • How is "THEY ARE PATHETIC AND REPRESENT THE TYPICAL ASIAN" not a stereotype. o_O" very honestly need help.

and i feel the need to caps my qoutes because it makes everything so much more obvious.

  • Owned.

  • lol..this fight is funny.

  • @Lordoink

You read Twilight...don't you? Clearly you think everyone's life should have mild complications at best and be wrapped up with a pretty little bow.

  • @Stellana What does her criticism have to do with the quality of Amy Tan's worth? Amy Tan is just a Maxime Hong Kingston rip off. I bet you read Oprah book of the month literature.

  • @Torkulguy

What makes you think I care about Oprah's opinions on...anything, let alone books?

  • @Stellana What makes you think Lordoink likes Twilight? Amy Tan is in the same league as Stephanie Myer: In spite of her relatively simplistic writing with shallow themes, she still makes it as an American best seller. You're assumption on Lordoink came from nothing, mine at least had some ground. Tan is just an incredibly diluted Kingston.

  • @Torkulguy

Uh-huh...and how is her writing simplistic? I happen to like the way she tells her stories. I feel like she chooses her wording carefully and knows when and how to leave an emotional impact. As for shallow themes, if you don't like "mother daughter relationships" try reading Saving Fish From Drowning (though it is my least favorite of hers). You seem to really love this Kingston guy though, as you keep bringing him up.

  • @Lordoink I'm no fan of Amy Tan either. I feel her writing is incredibly simplistic and has the same themes throughout; however, at least she makes an attempt. The Asian-American population, to me, is misrepresented in America. Every literature class I've ever taken, not once was an Asian- American, or Asian text observed. This is sad, since the east is rich with culture that would be difficult to turn a blind eye to. Like Charles Bukowski's largely simplistic writing, it's at least a start

  • @Torkulguy But sometimes there can be beauty in simplistic writing.

  • @okaminess Yeah...that's my point.

  • "if she was a bad writer, she wouldn't be so famous. " You do realize that is a logical falliacy right?

  • *fallacy =]

  • Okay, kiddies, calm the fuck down. It's just a book. =]

  • Wow.. it's really not that hard of a read. =\ Go back to watching TV, son.

  • I'm so far behind in the world of literature. As far as I knew, this book had just come out recently. I'm just starting on it, and I love Amy Tan's writing.

  • I love all her books!

  • she's a very talented artist! i didn't know she could be soo corny in person but i like her writings anyways.

  • How in the world was that corny??

  • I am on the 4th book by Amy Tan. It is better not to look at her ,it is better just read her books.

  • Ok, wow, what does that mean?? Her books are amazing, she is amazing - gorgeous, intelligent...what's the probably here? You did happen to catch that she was Chinese-American and no longer in her 20's, right? Not plastic enough for you to approve of or what? ^~^

  • TYPO..."what's the **problem** here" lol, oh, that's like storming out of a room, slamming the door, and then realizing that you walked into a closet by mistake. Crap.

  • LOL - hilarious.

  • LOL

  • I've read this book...

  • wow, this just recorded. I am on my third Amy Tan book and I think I'm in love. :)
