  • i love this album with all my heart

  • I looked up this album because of a Rolling Stones list of the best albums of all time - they rated it #2 (of 500.) Prior to downloading Pet Sounds, I only thought of Surfin USA when considering the Beach Boys. Needless to say it's rare to discover that a group you thought of as "no big deal" is actually responsible for a true musical masterpiece.

  • why argue? the beatles and the beach boys loved eachothers music! cant we do the same?? ROCK ON BRITTS AND AMERICANS!!

  • Wait a minute, is someone here actually DEFENDING rolling stone magazine, If you were a true music fan, you would not be too serious about anything written in that rag. The best lp's pf the 1960's are as follows: 1. PET SOUNDS 2. REVOLVER 3. BEGGARS BANQUET 4. WE2RE ONLY IN IT FOR THE MONEY 5. RUBBER SOUL. That's my opinion, but my opinion is all that matters, right?

  • best album of the 60`s? easy.."forever changes" by LOVE!

  • Brian Wilson was singularly the most influential composer/arranger of his time. While Lennon/McCartney with George Martin were outstanding, No one person could approach Wilson.

  • @westentrance phil specktor

  • @szumwalt001 Yes, you're right. While not Wilson's equal, Soector was an outstanding producer (pretty wierd guy though).

  • Pet Sounds+Peppers Are Great,But Forever Changes By Love is Better than both of em!

  • Sgt peppers was influenced by this album , but pet sounds was influenced by Rubber Soul. sgt peppers is better anyway

  • Got a point there! BEATLES OWN!

  • Este album es lo mejor de los beach boys

  • No. He's stupid.

  • This album is on more number album of all time lists than any other, not just with music critics but with performers such as The Beatles, Eric Clapton, Elton John and Bob Dylan. Really silly to argue with that.

  • What if I don't really like The Beatles, Eric Clapton, Elton John and Bob Dylan.

  • It doesn't mean you're stupid, you just have bad taste that's all.

  • you can barely consider this a rock and roll album, sgt peppers was an attempt to infuse the new sound that both the BB and the beatles were trying to achieve and a rock and roll sound. Sgt peppers was a better album because of the fact that it was more influential. Pet sounds is an amazing album but its very hard to compare the two. I personally think that Sgt Peppers is better.

  • Your opinion is not widely shared among musical historians, critics or fans. So either they are all wrong, or....

  • u asked them all ?? i personally like sgt peppers but pet sounds is a close second, take a fuckin seat

  • your reading skills are as poor as your knowledge of music.

  • wow, keep draging it on , settle down

  • you are an idiot. pet sounds shows up as number one on all but the Rolling Stones list, and on Rolling Stones it was number two. Even Paul McCartney says its the best and most influential of all rock albums. You think you know more about rock than Paul? Do your research before making stupid ass remarks.

  • wow, its my fucking opinion , shut up already u queer

  • I saw the video Forte, a waste of time actually and quite ignorant. How can you not be aware that Pet Sounds influenced Sgt Peppers? Even though its well documented and that The Beatles and Brian Wilson were friendly competitors. When George Martin said that "without Pet Sounds, Sgt Pepper wouldnt have happened" what do you think he meant?

I like Pepper but Rubber Soul is my favorite.

  • If SMiLE had come out-the Beatles would have been finished...Track down some of the acetates from the lp, It blows away ANYTHING the Beatles could have hoped to achieve in 1966, ANYTHING. Brian Wilson is the BEST thing that ever happened to popular music in any decade. Listen to McCartneys last laughable lp, that listen to Lucky Old Sun, Wilson's latest release. There's no comparison.

  • but what about "Tomorrow never knows" or their use of the Leslie speaker on Revolver.

  • @bunnyhead71

Yo. Thank you. Spoken like a true fan. SMiLE blows away any pop band's best album out of about that whole century.

  • This album was the inspiration (with the Kellog's Corn Flakes) for Good Morning Good Morning, and the Sgt. Pepper's........?

    Well, it's sounds good

  • de la puta madre!!!!!!!!! adoro el pet soundssssssssss

  • anyone who doesnt own pet sounds, abbey road(beatles)and who`s next(the who) should,by law have there ears sliced off with a broken cream cracker, still each to their own, free country, live and let live etc etc.

  • you forgot Electric Ladyland

  • lets be honest here, whos next is not at that level

  • Over time two of my favorite tracks from Pet Sounds have become the two instrumental pieces. When I heard them live with Brians band at the Hard Rock in Vegas in 1999 my thoughts were Sheila E eat your heart out. Brian was invoking Jazz Classical Pop Rock and Fusion all together at this time of his life, It is a pity his muse left him and has never returned, even to another, however she has quite a list, Mozart, Bach, Bethoven and Brian Wilson.

  • I used to have a distaste for such simple pop music because it seemed so easy to write a catchy, non complex song, but it is an art in its own right. I thought of the Beach Boys as writing really these simple. I was right, however, Pet Sounds ALSO happened.

I would really listen to the album and think of it almost separate in cannon. Their old stuff is well written, but nowhere near the same level. You would be doing yourself a favor.

  • The early BB music was pretty basic, but the seeds of Pet Sounds were growing several years before it was recorded. The simplicity of some songs from the 1964-65 era is deceptive; listening to the vocal and backing tracks separately can be revealing.

Some of BW's pre-Pet Sounds work is more overtly complex (Let Him Run Wild, the intro to California Girls, etc.). Pet Sounds was the next step in a musical evolution that was already in progress.

  • Personally, I would rather listen to great wet squelching farts than the beach boys, and this only confirms my feelings on their "music".

  • See, I used to feel that way (and I thought of myself as pretty eclectic musically) and knew a lot of people who felt that way.

And then I realized that when I was younger, there was a lot of music that I hated that I swore I would never like and then eventually came around to years later when I ran out of everything else I listened to.

And then one day I listened to this entire album twice on a road trip in a row and the second time through something just clicked. Ridiculous stuff.

  • ok dip shits THIS is the album that inspired SGT PEPPER......PAUL`S bass playing changed drastictly after he heard this ,,,,...... even though brian was inspired by RUBBER SOUL

  • my girlfriend doesn't like pet sounds or smile, and I keep saying we got to get stereo because it wasn't made for in built computer speakers the just won't do it justice I'd love to hear this coming off a good turntable, through some ear phones or something, because it really is mindblowing especially 'don't talk'.

  • I bought this record when it was released in 1966 and was absolutely hypnotized by it then. Every one of my friends didnt get it. I hope they do now. If not, its truely their loss. Thanks Brian, Carl, Dennis, Al, Mike. You made my teenage years something special.

  • Thriller may have a few catchy songs and is generally more recognized by the general public, but nothing on it matches the sheer musical ingenuity found within Pet Sounds. It's extremely melodic, deeply introspective, and revolutionary in its production. Perhaps if Thriller could escape from the bounds of its soulless and sterile 80's production it could compete.

And BTW, Off The Wall is way better.

  • im sorry but i find both sgt pepper and magical mystery tour better than the pet sounds album, even if pet sounds was the inspiration, the beatles did it better. but there is no doubt that pet sounds is one of the greatest albums of all time

  • Mystery Tour has nothing on this in terms of songwriting with the exception possibly of strawberry fields.

  • True. Interestingly, Strawberry Fields was recorded for but not included in Sgt Pepper.

  • I've been saying this for years. Pet Sounds is definitely good, but it doesn't compare to The Beatles. I wish it did; god knows I want there to be something as good as The Beatles but there just isn't, plain and simple

  • So Beautiful. ... there is so much about this album ... suggested reading - "The Making of PetSounds" - great book... (Nice selection of songs..."Caroline No" sent chills through me... Inspired Sgt. Pepper... Peace, ~Sharon :D

  • this album is from the heart

  • one of the 5 greatest albums of all time, no doubt.

  • The best pop album

  • Actually, one of the greatest mind bending montages ever! Peace my love....peace.

  • The greatest and most beautiful song ever written. BRIAN WILSON IS A GENIUS!
