When I do the gradient thing, I do exactly as is told, but when I click Difference Clouds, it just inverts the gradient. I don't see any cloud effect. Please help! Thanks.
You need to double click on BACKGROUND and when the pop-up window comes click enter to turn it into a LAYER. Only if your BACKGROUND becomes a LAYER can you move layers around (over or under each other). When your BACKGROUND is a BACKGROUND, it's basically locked in terms of layer movement. Hope this makes sense. English isn't my first language.
Good tutorial. However, certain things in Photoshop suck like shit and the lens flare and difference cloud tools are two of them. When I press CTRL + F in order to keep getting different cloud results, I never get anything close to a lightning look. And there's sadly no finer control options for the difference clouds effect. Photoshop is a great program, however, as a constant user of the program I feel there is always room for more improvement.
@cawimmer430 Use an image ratio of 1:5 (width 1 : length 5) to get a more straighter lightning, and then use a new image to combine a few of those together to a lightning strike like in this turorial. Else, take a look at my tutorial, maybe it can help you.
Hi, I figured that out about a minute after posting my response here. Kind of sucks that I had to resize the image I was working on to get the effect I wanted. Thanks for the info, though.
Tip: use adjustment layers to make the light and keep them at the top in the layer bar and you dont need to fic the colours everytime you make a new lightning
@BlackFunnyjunk You'll have to change the colours at the bottom left (I don't know what you call them) to black and white. This will then let the cloud appear as black and white. :)
wow dude ok 1st of all instead of going to the image panel u could have used the shortcuts... and secondly u can just grab any brush with eraser and set the hardness to zero.... if you really wanna know how to make lightning ill show you... but other than that good tut...
Question. I have PS CS5 and when I put the gradient straight across and then goto difference clouds it just reverses my gradient to where white is on the left and black on the right. Whats wrong with my PS?
When i press ´´Render´´--> ´´Different clouds´´ I get something that don´t really looks like a lightning :S and i´ve done it all right :/ please help me..
@ShawnPaw100 Click select -> color range, click on the black part of the image with lightning, click ok, click edit -> cut, and just drag the lightning to the other picture. Hope it helped!
I am so very new to CS5, and I am following your video to do this lightning effects. After I chose different clouds, and go to image - adjustment- then suppose to be INVERT...but why the INVERT is grey out? Can you tell me what happen to it.
in time 0:43 what did you press??,,, i cant read it... and in my photoshop its, when i press that word(i dont think if the one i press is the exact word)its not working... what is that word???... =))
@brandonjamesbarnes No your the one your statement earlier was stupid. " No one buys photoshop" Obviously you have no idea how big the industry for that product is so please come with facts instead of spitting off your mouth.

You should have used to burn tool instead of using the eraser to erase the parts of the lightning you didn't want.

this is aswome but i have a question. the background of this is black............but what do u do it you want to put lightning in a pic???
ShawnPaw100 1 year ago
@ShawnPaw100 You would merge the layers and put the blend mode on screen. My fireworks tutorial uses the same process if you are confused.
RiverCityGraphix 1 year ago 9
@RiverCityGraphix Or without any background;
Create your lightning without colorizing it, make the next sparkle etc.. all without colorizing.
When you have the shape you want, select all the layers (right bottom) and right click->merge.
When that's done, go to channels, select the red channel, duplicate it. Go back to the layers tab and highlight the layer.
Go to select, load selection and chose red copy from the drop down box
Go to select, invert selection and press cmd+x or ctrl+x
