  • 11 people have squared-off craniums.

  • oh that's who weird al was parodying

  • Old School Devo Is The Best.

  • Great!

  • 90-degree angle.... flat top.....

  • I first heard this when Poison Idea covered it - and loved it. The original is just amazing!

  • they have a great message for everyone... the apartment dweller... the romantic... the future leaders who have a duty now for the future.. and the jocks who need to back the f*** up

  • I wish the ending chorus would have last 20 bloody minutes

  • Devo was a Punk band until they mutated into New Wave by the 80's.

    Either way, they are EPIC!!

  • Devo! Rocks!=D

  • Indeed it is: 11/8 verse. 4/4 chorus.

  • DEVO FOREVER

  • God, I remember just worshipping Devo back in the day... Saw them at the Univeristy of Maryland (1980?) All my relatives made fun of them, me, etc. But anyone who appreciates music must admit that they were unique; Maybe not in terms of musical form (There are/were more experimental bands like King Crimson, Yes, etc.) - but they were dedicated artists who stuck to their vision/style!!

  • so intense

  • Pure, adrenaline-fuelled, peerless punk rock music. Devo are Gods.

  • new album guy's,look for 'Fresh',good stuff

  • First time I saw these guys on SNL in '78 I was blown away!

  • it always feels like im watching them in fast motion, overflow energy

  • Crazy timing. Very cool song.

  • whoa, i think i want my tail back too!

  • this song kicks ass, rips, takes no prisoners. made of awesome.

  • fuckin A

  • De-evol-u-tion...baby!!! Primal realism and great concept! Have loved them forever. They lost me after the first 3 albums, though. Got to meet Mr. Motherbaugh at a Fullerton art gallery displaying his work in the mid-1980s...very shy to meet him and the other DEVO members that were there. In my book they are close to Gods. Such an inspiration!!! One day I will get that yellow plastic suit and wear it with pride!!!

  • This IS the best performance of BLOCKHEAD I have ever seen.Thank you for posting.

  • This is the ONLY performance I've seen! And I've been following them since day one...

  • I have never seen this!!! What is the source of this video? Amazing footage from their classic era --- thanks for posting!!!!!!! :)

  • Devo is truly amazing, all kids listen too today is jonas brothers and shit like that. I'm 13 and I hate todays modern stuff I listen to classics and GOOD stuff.

  • @conn0412 TRY POLYSICS

  • this is great!

  • This is the best performance of this song I have ever seen or heard-- simply riveting! My 2-year-old demands that I show him this video at least once a day.

  • That guitar solo is so demented.

  • It's everything a guitar solo should be, and then some.

  • Terrible, terrible bands these days, try to mock Devo's minimalist new wave sound, but nobody can hold a candle to them.

  • Presence, performance, passion, and what about that time signature??!

  • yeah what is it?

  • Verses are in 11/8 time, choruses are 4/4.

  • @DeviousMofo yay! haha sorry i was scrolling down to an old comment where i asked what the time signature was then i just counted it out :)

  • @gumonthepants i think the verse is 11/8

  • @fuckamericanidiot Yes, subdivided into 4/3/4, great groove.

  • teh DoVe RulezROR!

  • 100% Punk Rock!!! Love DEVO!!

  • yes devo rules. born in 65 I was around 18 when we listen to devo unforgettably

  • i want to see more footage of them live in the Duty Now era

  • I like to get high and listen to devo while i do my calculus 101 homework

  • and even though im keeping my mind active, i like to think that i am still DEVOLVING

  • stop motion; ----- Inspiration Wakker -------

  • I love those cranky, hyperactive movements and dances. It looks like this movie is made with stop/motion. Uncomparable!

  • this is my fav song off duty now for the future....BLOCKHEAD.

  • Still a powerful sound after all these years! I hope someone somewhere has a cleaner video copy to upload.

  • dont let any band putting out records in the last ten years see this... How embarrassing for them!

    DEVO rules

  • its never straight up and down dobbs heads!

  • what tv show is this from??????

  • Don Kirchner's Rock Concert

  • YES ! it was at Don Kirchners Rock concert, and Thanks for not being too pink to forget that....

  • weird, what era is that, they arent wearin yellow suits or kneepads. I guess its a uniform that didnt make it to a record cover?

  • those were the Duty Now For The Future uniforms. They were sold by the fan club as the DEVO Leisure Suit

  • This is I/O . Assembly Langauge. Even before BASIC.

  • OK Spuds --its called You Tube Downloader, its free and you can save/steal all you like to your hard drive or flash drive ------please do it before Warner Music Group makes it go away for good ;(

  • Oh....my apartment neighbors HATED this song at 2:00 AM back in 1980.

  • Please, this song is the jam!! Punk Rock!

  • @dkraft1 I was listen too Freedom of Choice in 1980...

  • excelent solo at 1:35, ingenious.

  • Comment removed

  • Geniuses.

"Oh Dad.... We're ALL DEVO !"

  • you should check out this song in the 07 video on youtube. Sound so damn good for a song that is over 20 years old.

  • i love the leisure suits and visors, they actually look cool, but not too cool.

  • thesesails, thank you so much for posting this video. I truly wish I had a secure copy of this video for myself. I love watching it.

Any chance I could get it from you?

  • use the youtube downloader. u can google it

  • hard to figure this thing out.

  • Strangely I have a picture of the crowd watching DEVO when they were touring Europe with Motorhead among other bands,, in the picture you can see Lemmy in the front row smiling.

  • That is awesome ^^

  • any chance of posting it somwhere on the net? sounds like something i would like to see. cool

  • Lemmy was in a hard rock artsy fartsy pre punk with rock/metal band which incorporated synthesizers and they strangely sounded like the precursor to what Devo would do 3 years later

  • @dantony09 whoaaaa what was the band?

  • truer words have never been spoken!

  • Mark was truly an artist as a musician, an that of course helped. This song could pretty easily be covered by any band today .... and be considered cutting edge.

Motorhead ..... couldn't play this. Not live anyway.

  • ....There are no good groups any more. whta happened to the fun and irony, and well....ummm FUN? Boring artists today. Totally cliche and unoriginal...sigh.

  • should read Adam Ant was my 2nd concert...

  • LOVE DEVO. WAS my 1st concert ever! I was 11 They played at a college in Philadelphi in 1979. The concert was in a gymansium . I had to beg,cry ,plead, and starve to go. If it had been at a huge venue I would not havebeen allowed to go but since it was in a school gym my fther finally broke down and took me. SO MUCH FUN!! Adam and was my next concert 2 years later, and then missing persons at Jones beach Theatre.

  • grow up you fucks

  • Oh my! such naughty language Rand, you must be a metal head--maybe you like Primus,Motorhead,Ozzy--maybe still in diapers when Country Joe and the Fish were around ?

  • No need for sweeping generalizations, spud - This guy sounds like a douche, but many METALHEADS (i.e. me) are huge DEVO fans too!

  • Hey I bought Motorhead albums and went to pre Ozzy concerts( Black Sabbath)-the difference was that mainstream radio was into D I S C O not D E V O and as a proud supporter of the oldest broadcasting FM listener funded radio station(WMNF) we played D E V O not disco

  • Consumers without ethics are nothing more than fattened pigs-they just gobble up anything you throw at them ;(

  • Your going from Panheads to Blockheads without allowing us SHOVELHEADS to shovel the cr-p out of the way for a new start ;) and if you listen to a current pop rock station ,you are doomed ;(

  • nice, i like the sad wink cos i've always found that a funny idea, a person winking with a sad face

  • I've watched this video 93,644 times.

    yur the other person

  • I have a rottweiller mi that I call Blockhead.

  • Such a great performance. So much more rockin' than the studio version, yet just as tight and perfect.

  • Greatest. Song. Ever.

  • devo sange about D and A back in the 70s.

  • cube top squared off eight corners 90 degree angles flat top stares straight ahead stock parts block head..........

  • One of the best bands EVER.....probably the number 1 most band underrated too..noone knew that Whip It was nothing more than just a fun little song...kind of sucks that people didn't understand what Devo were all about. But it's awesome that they're still out there rockin!

  • I don't care what genre people classify this as, I know it is good regardless.

  • And some people say DEVO wasn't punk. Witness that solo at 1:25!!! That is stripped down, fuck you, fuck all, ain't gonna play your way spud P-U-N-K. "New Wave" my ass! If anything they were punker than punk.

  • the way I said "out there rockin'" was kind of fruity yeah...thanks for agreeing though

  • making commercials for motorcycles is punk?

  • it doesnt get much more punk then that!

  • lol i love that sarcacism..you are being sarcastic rite?

  • punks like money too.

  • Seriously, I never understood what was wrong with selling your songs. They're yours. You have the right to sell them to the goddamned Nazis if you want. The song's still good.

  • well it is a problem if you claim to exist with the punk ethos of going against corperations and then at the same time supply consumerism. apologies for any mis spelt words

  • I TOTALLY AGREE!! DEVO is total PUNK ROCK!! PERIOD!

  • @carlodave9 FUCK YEAH!

  • @carlodave9 they are so not punk their awesome yes thats right you go into a cd shop and looks under awesome devo is their

  • @carlodave9 Yeah, next you're gonna suggest Flock of Seagulls were grunge.

  • @smartlamppost early DEVO is more prototype than anything, with heavy punk influence but with a stronger, more elloquently worded message with a MUCH MUCH higher concept than Nihilism and "Piss on ye Mum! Piss on ye Dad! Piss on the WURLD-OYE!"

  • Devo rules!

  • Can remember somewhere in 1978 1979 I heard this great sound in an old concert hall in my hometown. Spectacular angled music. More sparkling than punk played with discipline and left me astonished. Some people in that hall were singing one or two songs along and were completely into it. Didn't want to disturb them in that rush. Afterwards asked them what the name of the band was: DEVO. I was sold and bought the record the next morning. Being an unusual morningbird that day. I was overwhelmed.

  • This is a great footage, thanks for posting! I saw them recently and they played A LOT of these older songs and had lost none of their energy - they were, and still are awesome live.

  • 1st 2 DEVO albums were probably the best rock albums ever made.

  • Blockhead and Mongoloid should get together and go out for a drink sometime.

  • 1st two albums by DEVO were milstones I remember the older generation hating these guys. One of the last youth movements in music when being young meant new ideas. Now the corporations tell the young how to think. SAD.

  • I second that. Also, the first two records had traditional rock element 'hooks' in most every song. More driven than gimmicky. Fun/clever stuff.

  • I agree, no new IDEAS today other than covering songs these corporations already own so the puppet "artist" really doesn't even own their music and know they are in the limelight courtesy of their masters, I mean label. The New World Order is growing stronger, and stupid sheeple cant even say why they voted for our new pres other than "change" yet we see the cabinet is retreads from the Carter and Clinton cabinets. Blockheads one, Blockheads all. I guess going from frying pan 2 fire is a change!

  • It sounds like something from Late of the Pier...possibly Heartbeat. Wow, DEVO were way inspirational.

  • sounds like the pixies might have listened to this once or twice

  • This Must have been the Don Kirschner Show version!

  • Long live DEVO and Punk Rock!!! EMO sucks and is fake!!!

  • Never heard this before! I really like the driving rhythm they got going and there look on this song. I think this just bumped Through being cool, for me. :)

  • wot a track

  • Great track! Great era....completely original. Unlike uncontolable urge which sounds like Misty Mountain hop by Led Zeppelin.

  • Oh Geeze I so remember this.

  • fuckin' great.... thank you so much for this...

  • Best. Band. Ever.

  • I am a full on fan! Can't tell you how many times I've seen these guys live. Does anyone have "Pink Pussycat"? Please post for those of us DEVOted spuds. Thanks for posting Blockhead!

  • uh, praise DOBBS! "2B1ASK1"

  • oh god thanks! this somehow got shown on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, which is where I first saw it. still as life changingly cool now as it was then. just saw them in Boston, screamed along with this song!

  • i just saw devo and they kicked soooooooooooooOOOoooooo much ass

  • HEY joydiv76 iwas there and and beleive you,me you did miss out on a lot and yes it was a sad day when devo disbanded but at least you can enjoy them now

  • watching this video makes me regret being born in 1993 lol id rather be around in those years than these.

it sucks that i missed this

  • yeah but you have britney spears?

devo predated sequencers and played all that great rythm without the benefit of computers

they were really something. I wrote all their lyrics on my schoolbooks when i was 16

  • You know what that makes you, those who will save the past... Unfortunatly your words fall on "stupid" ears. These days no one cares about REAL music or REAL anything. Devo was REAL and if what you said was real then god bless you. You just might know what i am talking about. Media has degraded to a less than educated form of brain wash. Unfortunatly so has our past. Look up devo 2.0... Sorry to break it to you this way. but hey, enjoy my website. I try to keep your past alive!

  • ME THE SAME!!!!!!!

  • id swap with you any bloody day

  • REALLL.

  • watching this video makes me regret being born in 1993 lol id rather be around in those years than these.

it sucks that i missed this

  • Devo was and is a amazing, ground breaking group!

  • Brilliant composition- I knew Devo was into complex meters but this piece grooves hard in an 11 beat meter at times. Sheer raw excitement and genius. And that guitar solo- dag! 8)

  • fukin brill, kids these days dont know what they missed, glad to be my age?

  • Wicked song!!! I love DeVo

  • OH MY GOD. They were just amazing.

  • Squared off, 90 degree angle...blockheads!

look at our homes??? any connection?

    way to go! DEVO!

  • Mothersborough's voice is like a blunt dentist's drill

  • at 2:44, it gets epic, with all the instruments playing in unison, a chorus of the spuds, and the camera cycling faster...

duty now for the future spuds.

  • You're SO right. Those last 16 bars should be among Devo's greatest moments.

  • excellent. great performance by a visionary band whose wusic rocks louder today than ever. Duty now folks, we are all devo.

  • so r u

  • The effect is due to Devo's "musical laxative for a constipated world".

  • Bob 1 is zapping the crowd with devolved aural positive mutations in his solo.

  • i like the way the verses are in 11/8 time!!

  • i dont think they knew at the time haha

  • Heh oh yes they did. wierd time stamps are the name of devo's game.

  • jocko homo is proof.

  • Wow, that was waaay tight on stage. Duty Now was the best album and I would have given chillstem's left nut to see it live.

Thanks for posting it Spud Boy!

  • Saw them on Duty Now for the Future tour at Santa Monica Civic, and on Freedom of Choice tour and on New Traditionalists tour, and Oh No!, It's Devo! The best was Duty Now!!! We couldn't hear for days afterward!

  • They were the best live band I ever seen. They sounded better than the records. Awesome live show. I saw them at UCSB in '79 . They tore the roof off that place, and looked like robots doing it. Great band, one of the great ones.

  • They played several songs from Duty Now on the Q&A tour. Q&A and Duty Now were my favorite shows. Freedom and later were in bigger venues. They were still fun, but I liked the clubs, standing right next to the stage, better.

  • this song is awesome...Devo always sounds better live

  • pecker 360 is a bigger devo stem fan. hey wike debo, huh i b drolling , anybody out wike a overheated stem...pecker 360 say he wike debo.i weally dink they bee a bwunch of tards myself

  • wtf?!

  • i wike debo they happy banduh

  • love the guitar....it's not in the studio version.

  • I agree with the last comment, even though they did have success, they were mostly dismissed as a joke at the time, but the music has stood up much better than people thought it would and influenced many bands.

they were ahead of their time.

  • BEYOND AWESOME! DEVO Rules!

DEVO is the most underated PROGRESSIVE ROCK band in the history of comercial pop music.

    EM~

  • Dude..., you rule for posting this track! Thanks. WhiplashJoe

  • This version is SICK! Sounds better than album version. A little faster and more guitar.

  • stayed up late to catch this one live.

    better 2nd time around

  • hairs on my neck electified..... close your eyes..can you smell it?

    1978

Genious...thank you thank you for posting

    PEACE

  • actualy this may be mor elike 77 before they signed to Virgin

  • no, wrong, it was 79

  • Cult status!!

    Wish i was born earlier

  • I know eh? I wish I was born when these guys were big

  • Mark Mothersbah said in an interview that they dreaded having their equipment repaired because the tech. would always want to put it back to it's orginal state, and that would screw up their sound= They WANTED it to be tweaked the Devo way. They were equipment Hotrodders!

  • ok!!!

  • Waaayyyy ahead of their time, excellent!

  • very beefheart ish
