they have a great message for everyone... the apartment dweller... the romantic... the future leaders who have a duty now for the future.. and the jocks who need to back the f*** up
God, I remember just worshipping Devo back in the day... Saw them at the Univeristy of Maryland (1980?) All my relatives made fun of them, me, etc. But anyone who appreciates music must admit that they were unique; Maybe not in terms of musical form (There are/were more experimental bands like King Crimson, Yes, etc.) - but they were dedicated artists who stuck to their vision/style!!
De-evol-u-tion...baby!!! Primal realism and great concept! Have loved them forever. They lost me after the first 3 albums, though. Got to meet Mr. Motherbaugh at a Fullerton art gallery displaying his work in the mid-1980s...very shy to meet him and the other DEVO members that were there. In my book they are close to Gods. Such an inspiration!!! One day I will get that yellow plastic suit and wear it with pride!!!
Devo is truly amazing, all kids listen too today is jonas brothers and shit like that. I'm 13 and I hate todays modern stuff I listen to classics and GOOD stuff.
This is the best performance of this song I have ever seen or heard-- simply riveting! My 2-year-old demands that I show him this video at least once a day.

Strangely I have a picture of the crowd watching DEVO when they were touring Europe with Motorhead among other bands,, in the picture you can see Lemmy in the front row smiling.
Lemmy was in a hard rock artsy fartsy pre punk with rock/metal band which incorporated synthesizers and they strangely sounded like the precursor to what Devo would do 3 years later
Mark was truly an artist as a musician, an that of course helped. This song could pretty easily be covered by any band today .... and be considered cutting edge.
Motorhead ..... couldn't play this. Not live anyway.
....There are no good groups any more. whta happened to the fun and irony, and well....ummm FUN? Boring artists today. Totally cliche and unoriginal...sigh.
LOVE DEVO. WAS my 1st concert ever! I was 11 They played at a college in Philadelphi in 1979. The concert was in a gymansium . I had to beg,cry ,plead, and starve to go. If it had been at a huge venue I would not havebeen allowed to go but since it was in a school gym my fther finally broke down and took me. SO MUCH FUN!! Adam and was my next concert 2 years later, and then missing persons at Jones beach Theatre.
Oh my! such naughty language Rand, you must be a metal head--maybe you like Primus,Motorhead,Ozzy--maybe still in diapers when Country Joe and the Fish were around ?
Hey I bought Motorhead albums and went to pre Ozzy concerts( Black Sabbath)-the difference was that mainstream radio was into D I S C O not D E V O and as a proud supporter of the oldest broadcasting FM listener funded radio station(WMNF) we played D E V O not disco
Your going from Panheads to Blockheads without allowing us SHOVELHEADS to shovel the cr-p out of the way for a new start ;) and if you listen to a current pop rock station ,you are doomed ;(
One of the best bands EVER.....probably the number 1 most band underrated too..noone knew that Whip It was nothing more than just a fun little song...kind of sucks that people didn't understand what Devo were all about. But it's awesome that they're still out there rockin!
And some people say DEVO wasn't punk. Witness that solo at 1:25!!! That is stripped down, fuck you, fuck all, ain't gonna play your way spud P-U-N-K. "New Wave" my ass! If anything they were punker than punk.
Seriously, I never understood what was wrong with selling your songs. They're yours. You have the right to sell them to the goddamned Nazis if you want. The song's still good.
well it is a problem if you claim to exist with the punk ethos of going against corperations and then at the same time supply consumerism. apologies for any mis spelt words
@smartlamppost early DEVO is more prototype than anything, with heavy punk influence but with a stronger, more elloquently worded message with a MUCH MUCH higher concept than Nihilism and "Piss on ye Mum! Piss on ye Dad! Piss on the WURLD-OYE!"
Can remember somewhere in 1978 1979 I heard this great sound in an old concert hall in my hometown. Spectacular angled music. More sparkling than punk played with discipline and left me astonished. Some people in that hall were singing one or two songs along and were completely into it. Didn't want to disturb them in that rush. Afterwards asked them what the name of the band was: DEVO. I was sold and bought the record the next morning. Being an unusual morningbird that day. I was overwhelmed.
This is a great footage, thanks for posting! I saw them recently and they played A LOT of these older songs and had lost none of their energy - they were, and still are awesome live.
1st two albums by DEVO were milstones I remember the older generation hating these guys. One of the last youth movements in music when being young meant new ideas. Now the corporations tell the young how to think. SAD.
I agree, no new IDEAS today other than covering songs these corporations already own so the puppet "artist" really doesn't even own their music and know they are in the limelight courtesy of their masters, I mean label. The New World Order is growing stronger, and stupid sheeple cant even say why they voted for our new pres other than "change" yet we see the cabinet is retreads from the Carter and Clinton cabinets. Blockheads one, Blockheads all. I guess going from frying pan 2 fire is a change!
Never heard this before! I really like the driving rhythm they got going and there look on this song. I think this just bumped Through being cool, for me. :)
I am a full on fan! Can't tell you how many times I've seen these guys live. Does anyone have "Pink Pussycat"? Please post for those of us DEVOted spuds. Thanks for posting Blockhead!

HEY joydiv76 iwas there and and beleive you,me you did miss out on a lot and yes it was a sad day when devo disbanded but at least you can enjoy them now
You know what that makes you, those who will save the past... Unfortunatly your words fall on "stupid" ears. These days no one cares about REAL music or REAL anything. Devo was REAL and if what you said was real then god bless you. You just might know what i am talking about. Media has degraded to a less than educated form of brain wash. Brilliant composition- I knew Devo was into complex meters but this piece grooves hard in an 11 beat meter at times. Sheer raw excitement and genius. And that guitar solo- dag! 8)
Saw them on Duty Now for the Future tour at Santa Monica Civic, and on Freedom of Choice tour and on New Traditionalists tour, and Oh No!, It's Devo! The best was Duty Now!!! We couldn't hear for days afterward!

I agree with the last comment, even though they did have success, they were mostly dismissed as a joke at the time, but the music has stood up much better than people thought it would and influenced many bands.
Mark Mothersbah said in an interview that they dreaded having their equipment repaired because the tech. would always want to put it back to it's orginal state, and that would screw up their sound= They WANTED it to be tweaked the Devo way. They were equipment Hotrodders!

I agree with the last comment, even though they did have success, they were mostly dismissed as a joke at the time, but the music has stood up much better than people thought it would and influenced many bands.
they were ahead of their time.

Mark Mothersbah said in an interview that they dreaded having their equipment repaired because the tech. would always want to put it back to it's orginal state, and that would screw up their sound= They WANTED it to be tweaked the Devo way. They were equipment Hotrodders!
