Theres no question with Ben's skills on the bass, the guy can definitely slap the bass, but of course, it's about style, and every musician has there own, i love his rock and roll approach to incubus, which states he ain't gonna change his style just because of the man he's replacing. he's got his own way of playing, and he brings that to new incubus tracks, some might say it's for the better, others might disagree. bottom line is, he is pretty good, and incubus wanted him. TWO THUMBS UP BEN!!!
The reason why he chooses not to slap on any of the newer albums is because its not what he does and he doesn'twant to change his style just to make a few people happy. The whole argument on how Ben isn't funky enough isn't even relavent anymore. Incubus had already stared shifting away from funk metal by Make Yourself. By Morning View it was virtually gone. The closest thing they had to funk was Are You In? and that's not even funk.
why are people freaking out? this is not a hard song that we should be giving ben kenney props for doing, i mean yea it's badass and even respectful that he would play dirks slap part, but it's not hard to do, the thing is can he make his OWN cool slap and pop lines?? HOWEVER, i like the guy and either way ben kenney is a great musician. I'm not a hater
@prouck YESS!! THANK YOU a mind that works, yea he's slapping but it ain't shit. this is not a song to give someone "mad slapping props" on. you know whats up, you a bass player?
Hrm prs?? Does this mean they might go back to harder incubus? I love all their music but I would love to see them go back in the late 90's direction. Yes Ben can slap but you still cant say much because Ben didn't write those original slap parts, dirk did. Judge him when you hear him doing slap bass in a brand new incubus track and take it from there.
@Deftoneskid1 actually mike either wrote or helped write all of derks bass lines, one of the reasons he isnt in the band, yeah he could play but he wasnt creative enough for the band. and i got that info from an interview with mike
@fredodp i don't mean to but in or be rude, but are you sure mike helped with dirks bass lines?? cuz thats not what i know, dirk definately made all the famous and really tight bass lines up himself, i'm just not sure that mike deserves credit for all of it.
let's just stop the "battle" over who you prefer the most, just enjoy their fucking music, besides, ain't no comparisson between Ben and Alex, they've different styles, so uh, anyway, just enjoy the music, there's nothing y'all can say to bring back Dirk or "fire" Ben...
@mattdcs15CORK wait... who's alex? and no ben can't really slap a bass, i mean i'm sure he can do some cool shit, he's a great musician, but mimicking DIRKS slap part in redefine is not hard to do and it does not mean he can slap. and ben is certainly not "better" than dirk... assuming thats who you mean when you say alex
@Cgeorge311 Alex, as in Alex Katunich, his actual name, not the nickname he was given by the lads! Emmm sorry, can't? So whats he doing in that video? He's slapping! I've seen him play live and do a bass solo which involved about a minute of VERY fast slapping! Alex didn't write most of the bass while in Incubus, Mike did, now Ben does, and an excellent job he does too! Ben, in my opinion, is a more talented than Alex ever will be, not only at bass, but at guitar, drums AND piano!
@Cgeorge311 He can slap, you twat. He might not be as great as Dirk, but the very thing that he's doing in this video is slapping a bass guitar. If you were to have wrote that he can't slap as well as Dirk, that would be fine because it's a matter of opinion and opinions are SUBJECTIVE. But if you were to deny a proven fact, then I would suggest that you get your bloody head checked.
P.S. Redefine's bass line isn't 'easy'. I mean, it's not all THAT hard, I can pull it off, but it's not 'easy'.
Yeah and he's also using his old PRS guitars out, omg. I saw some interview here on youtube where Brandon said that they've been rehearsing and playing their old songs and having a blast at the same time. Can't wait for the new album!
Capacity for the Echoplex is 580. How many were let in? I think 500. If you were at the bridge or further back, chances are, you weren't going to get in anyway.
same here. i was gonna cry when they opened with three SCIENCE songs. that show has topped tmv, nin, brand new, and portugal the man this year in my book.
alex katunich is the best!

@lightgrenades11 Ben definetaly does a better job not to mention the fact that he's a genius when you consider how brilliant he is as a musician.
Ben views the bass as a sort of bodyguard. He's there and makes his presence known but usually holds back unless it really calls for action.

Not only is he slapping but he's also playing a 5-string.... you can tell from the headstock it's either a Lakland 55-94 or a 55-02. Go Ben!
