  • After the stress of the 1930's depression and WWII people I think people liked the mental/emotional "release" coming from Spike's tune presentation and antics!

Have you heard the line, "The Danube isn't blue, it's green!' & belch"' in one of Spikes tunes. Had it on a 45 rpm until it carelessly got broken by a childhood friend in the 1950s. The flip side may have been, "You Always Hurt The One You Love."

Am wondering if another version of the Danube River tune was made at some point?

  • Spike said he got his inspiration from the Hoosier Hotshots. Skiffle music was a more direct decendent than "firehouse." Firehouse 5+2 was the second or third Trad Jazz band after Lu Waters Original Band on the west coast.

  • When Spike Jones was a little boy his father worked for SP Railroad and he and his family lived in Niland, California, which is now the location of Salvation Mountain. I not sure what that means but I'm sure it means something!

  • FUNNY!

  • what a treat! I have a Spike Jones Anthology, and this is on it... but I don't have a turn table, thanks for posting this.

BTW... did you know that Spike Jones and the City Slickers were mentioned in a program on National Public Radio, I think it was 'Shikele's Mix'...anyway the doctor said that Spike and the Slickers invented the genre of music, known as 'firehouse jazz'

my appologies to Dr Shikele, for messing up his name.

  • no i didn't know about spikes mention on national public radio, but he gets mentioned quite a bit on BBC radio 2 and other music stations have you ever heard "the Mitch Ben music show"?
