You would only have crankshaft problems from engaging first gear at too high an rpm or from for whatever reason, trying to ramp the bike or do wheelies.(dumping the clutch)
The bike is well known however to have carberator problems.
Nice video! I have a 1975 and a 1977. I've owned dozens of motorcycles and these are the cream of the crop. Broken cranks...never heard of such a thing. Could be a result of a broken timing belt and ALL goldwing owners know to change them often.
Owning one of these still gives me nightmares....
I had a 1975 GL ..... all was well, then, with a mere 28,000klms on the clock... I broke a crankshaft..... fixed it.... 2,000klms later... another broken crankshaft!......
I finally sold it in disgust and bought a CB900...
I now wonder how many other GL owners had crank problems.....
It was a pity.... it was a fabulous bike to cruise on
Sorry to here you had so much trouble. I was never a big fan of the GL1000 until I got this bike and started working on it. Since that time I have met many people who have very high mile / klm, over 100,000, 150,000 etc. bikes and have never had any problems with the crankshafts... They just don't seem to be a major issue with these motors. Unfortunately you ended up with an exception. I hope the CB900 worked out better for you.
Yeah.. Sorry to seem so down on these machines..I have yet to hear of this problem from other GL owners.... I must have got the last one off the line on a Friday -LOL
I had the 900 for about 12 years... loved it.. reliable and fast... I wish I still had it.
My wife talked me into selling it... now she's gone as well... I only miss the bike though!
dislikes lol
