@soadbreadontoast1 There are three kinds of educated. There are the uneducated, the educated, and the diseducated. I'd rather be uneduated southern dumbass myself as the educated up north lie while their diseducated children don't know enough to pull their pants up. Blame a lot of the present diseducated on the pretentiousness of Toni Morrison. By the way, if Toni Morrison was a white woman, her work would be considered trivial and work to be read by junior high school children.
@MisterNifty I'm a white international student studying Beloved in my English Literature class. Stop being one of those "diseducated" people who puts people into groups. YOU THINK THERE ARE 3 TYPES OF EDUCATED, i would like to hear your definition of education or educate. You Fool!
@DnBDoctor And what's she doin' bro? Is she singin' up dah' blues? Is she down wit' jazz? If there ain't no philosophy, then she ain't' nuttin' but sophistication blowing in the wind. Is she chopping up chiffarobes? Is she ankle deep in the world of meaning? Yep. In the end, Toni Morrison couldn't wash Samuel Clemen's dishes even if she were using her own tears as soap. Now, how is that for writing!
Beloved is a very strange and rich book, unlike anyhing I have ever read before, really. It's very deep and eerily beautiful. I don't understand what is with all the hate in the comments below. Toni Morrison is probably the greatest living American writer. Of course, that's only my opinion.
Yes! same here I was 12 when the film came out and I remeber sitting in the theatre really feeling scared and on edge watching it. Looking back I realize its because the film unapologetically displays the horrors of slavery. I was fascinated by the film and it Haunted me so much I wanted to read the book in high school. The book is a masterpiece by Pulitzer standards and the film is a beautiful work of art. OPRAH SHOULD HAVE GOT AN OSCAR FOR THAT ONE!
@caliking100 You should have seen how horrible things had been for African Americans back when they were still under bondage in Africa. Their AAfrican masters would line twelve African po po's (African slaves) and then sell them for a single horse. Before getting on the ship, the twelve had to draw straws to see which man or woman was the one who got sold for the horse's butt.
It is an epic, beloved...must say...got my bible , finally! and to looser down here who couldnt read it or understand...well sharpen ur brains than cocks buddy!
@gazzaladda Yes, you are "absolutely right" about that. By the way, what was your motivation for reading it? For me, it was a school assignment and I can honestly tell you that it turned my world upside down. I am very thankful to my college professor for assigning this book. In my humble opinion, it is not just another book about slavery written by a black woman, it is a book that brings to light the big enslaver, the author and the beneficiary of the slavery in the U.S.
@1adrian1969 I take it your being sarcastic, I was given this book to read for my english coursework and personally think that "to kill a mockingbird" is a far better book-so much simpler, yet so much more fulfilling to read as it is through the eyes of a child. whereas in "beloved" the constant jumping around from the past to future, and change in POV makes it insanely hard to understand-the fact Morrison refers so vaguely to the relation of the characters didn't help either. A laborious read.
@gazzaladda Okay, as I am a typical white man from the deep south, allow me to shine some insight into this pretentious woman. She isn't a great writer, my friend. Trust me. Thing is, there isn't a critic in the world who will dare call her out for the awful writer she truly is for fear of being accused of being racist. Why other African Americans don't write nonsense is beyond me. It would seem like an easy way for them to make a living. Anyway, trust me on this. Tony Morrison sucks.
@HeyLookItsLou I accidently spelt a "y" instead of an "i." Or should I say, "I accedently spelled a "y" instead of an "i"? Whatever the case, Toni Morrison didn't advance philosophy. She didn't create a new genre. She does indeed suck. There I said it. I guess I suffer from the racist gene because I don't like a black author. Indeed, I am prejudice. Someone notify mother Puritan up north and tell on me.
@MisterNifty Toni Morrison's writings speak to a specific audience, if you are not one of the people who her works speak to it does not mean that her work is invaluable and devoid of philosophy. She looks at this from a psychological context. But again not every other id for everyone, but that is by no means a reason to discount her writing at all.
@liljeada I think you're afraid to truly comprehend the garbage she is feeding you for fear of being called a racist. The point of paying for higher education is to advance beyond to figure out how the author is fooling you into putting down your guard. First off, no one is ever trained into the condition of slavery. Such unfortunate people fall into that condition over a long period of time. This is mother Puritan nonsense at her worst. In the end, Toni Morrison is a simpleton.
@gazzaladda Wow, an honest person. See, you are catching on, but you aren't quite there yet. This woman isn't a great writer. See, she is an African American (a person of color) and a woman. Being who she is, she could write any kind of nonsense under the sun and, just as long as it is about prejudice, she will be praised and honored by the pretentious up in the northeast and over in Europe. I think she sucks. I also think her writing sucks. I expressed this opinion in my English class.
@MisterNifty Just saying she sucks is not enough. Anybody could say that. Just because you don't like her, everyone else who does likes her only likes her because she is black and a woman and writes about race relations? That's just stupid. You need to get out of your trailer park in the south and realize Morrison is read all over the world, not just in the northeast or Europe. And I have a suspicion that you prefer a dumb-down type of writing. I guess you would hate Faulkner too.
Excuse me? I have already posted above how this woman's writing is totally devoid of any philosophy. Back her up with some philosophy. How has she advanced the social contract theory? She doesn't take any position as she has stated she is neither patriarchial or matriarchial. In other words, she is a typical Sophist. What is a sophist? Well, it is an eloquent someone devoid of anything philosophical.

@1adrian1969 Bul! SH#T. Please, get yourself an education. Trying reading the book instead of feeling it. Look, would you rather be treated like an animal or piece of crap? In America, the slaves (Slavs, Slavics) were taken in as family members in many cases. Back in Africa, they were worth 1/12th of a horse as the master class in Africa sold a dozen souls for a single horse.
A very difficult book to read.
