They show lord nataraj the avatar of lord shiva as maa kali :O,Maa kali is the mother goddess who runs the universe but not someone who listens to some evil magician, she's a compassionate mother she destroys only the evil forces ,she's not destructive to everyone she's so misunderstood by ppl of other cultures :(
Awesome scene.. but one little mistake... the form of the swords in the two different shots dont match( kali shot and sword shot)... take a closer look... anyway one of my alltime favourites
@TheBratzBirne Wow I've watched this scene probably more than a hundred times and I've never noticed the swords being different very good observation! One of all time favorite characters from Harryhausen there's something very surreal about seeing a statue come to life! thanks!
2 more swords than Grevious, and it uses all of them. I liked the Grevious scene, but it felt like they couldn't wait to disarm him and make the fight easier to choreograph.
Clay and stop-motion are the best special effects for statues brought to life! You've got the jerky motion (which is to be expected from a living and moving piece of stone) and you've got the actual material clay material to imitate the stone.
I just can't get over how natural he managed to make the statue's movements look! That would have been almost impossible already if she had only two arms!
Despite the fact its laughable for 1 man to even attempt to battle a statue with 6 arms wheelding 6 swords this is still better than any of the CGI/remake hollywood crap made today. Love you Harryhausen. Wish they brought stop motion back.
HA!! the bad guy who summons Kali is Tom Baker!!! AKA Doctor Who in the late 70s and early 80s!! I thought i recognised his voice at 0:58, then his big teeth when he smiles at 1:21
Motion blur in stop-motion was possible back in the 50's, but it was too time consuming and expensive. We have smooth CGI today, not because the FX are better, but because people like Lucas and Jackson can afford to have 200 people working on them. Harryhausen did all this by himself. I'd like to see one person create all the animation for LORD OF THE RINGS, or even JURASSIC PARK.
@Friendofkong So? I'm not knocking on Hausen by saying that, he worked wonders with what he had at the time, but if you try to convince people that Kali looks more realistic than a Mumakil, you either have a serious case of nostalgia goggles or are 15 and trying to sound sophisticated.
You dont seem to have read my post. I didn't say that fx doesn't look smoother today, just that the real reason it's better, is because people like Jackson can afford to spend tens of millions of dollars on them, and employ hundreds of technicians to do the work. No single fx artist from LORD OF THE RINGS could outdo Ray, unless he had 199 of his friends to help him.
this really makes cgi stand for; cunt, gaping, ideas.

I did love Sinbad movies! Funny tho ... they refer to that as Kali, but the statue was Nataraj - dancing Shiva. :) None-the-less entertaining.

Harryhausen is the undisputed master of any period in special effects. How can CGI realistically compare with this?
eddiefuzz 1 year ago 18
@eddiefuzz Because CGI makes it more realistic like the Dinosaurs in Jurassic Park back then giant monster
like King Kong was Stop Motion aka Clay Mation.
MrParkFan 6 months ago
@eddiefuzz By moving smoothly.

This incredible scene pisses over the swordfights in the Star Wars prequels AND stars Tom Baker as an evil Arab Wizard. What more do you need?
