I think the tenor was Joseph Calleja if this is from 2006
I had the pleasure of singing in the chorus with Ms. Futral as Violetta at the lyric in baltimore, and I've loved her voice ever since. I would agree with Vairguy09 that the recording doesn't do her justic
Wonderful voice! I will see her at the San Diego Civic Theatre on Sunday, April 25th, and I'm more than happy that you posted this video. It's a confirmation of a great performance!
Some o' them there a-shock-a-turas sound like a yelpin' Pekinese gettin' sired. I thought it was ok, it's my least favorite scene in the opera, but truthfully she's not musically mature enough to sing this stuff. It's the hardest role Verdi ever wrote, harder than Lady M, Abigaille, etc. You have to be a Tiger Woods to sing this well, and that's the truth.
A terrific clip. I've seen her a few times here in NYC..a Met Lucia in Central Park + Baby Doe, Semele and Strauss' Daphne @ NYCity Opera. She's always captivating. She should be more famous than she is and surely should sing @ the Met more. Plus I have a soft spot for a soprano with the guts to go for the top Eb in this aria. Go Liz! Thanks for posting.
Annoying that there is a dnatural hum throughout the whole clip. Was someone vacuuming the carpet? It's a lovely sound but she is absolutely knackered by the end - who can blame her!
Ii went to see this today 09/27/09 at the brown theater in Louisville -full house :)
.it was aaaaamazing!!! Elizabeth Futral was stunning. :) She is a diva worthy of the name. :) Sebastien Gueze --was good but ..I don't know.. his voice wasn't as strong or full as hers so they didn't match up as well as one could have wished. but it was still a realy good performance . :)
Terrific and terrifying mean the opposite, just as awesome and awful mean the opposite (as if you didn't know that, haha). In my half century of Violettas, I can't think of one that I have liked better. I'll see her next week...I hope she still looks like THAT!!!
Do you know if they intend to use live orchestra at the KY Opera production and not recorded music? I would like to go, but I would want it with the Louisville Orchestra and not recording...
The Louisville Orchestra is in the pit for all Kentucky Opera productions. As much as I like Futral, my purpose in going all the way from PA is to see the American debut of the young French tenor, Sebastien Gueze. He was a sensation in Boheme in Athens, which you can sample here on the tube. He will be doing this role for Austin Lyric Opera in November.
How did you find our lovely opera company? Saw the show today and was stunned by Miss Futral and it was a great pleasure to see Donnie Ray Albert and Sebastien Gueze. If you have the time as well, we'd love to have you join us for Floyd's Of Mice and Men. I'll be in the chorus for that. :)
"lovely opera company"...Indeed it is! I have certainly seen more sumptuously mounted Traviatas, but never one that thrilled me half as much. However, I don't see myself traveling to Louisville again, unless, of course, Sebastien Gueze is the tenor.
She's terrific!! Gorgeous, young, sexy, and her singing is beautiful and expressive! I hope to get to Kentucky Opera (9/25&27/09) to see her in this role!
I like the beginning, but toward the end, she was screaming her high notes. Ouch! Overall the performance does not have that effortless quality that brings you back to listen again and again.
Futral is great as Violetta...I've heard her sing live at the LA Opera and she has quite the range too..Baroque and lyric opera roles..she can do Marguerite in Faust, Cleopatra in Giulio Cesare and Lucia Di Lammermoor...a beautiful, healthy vibrant voice...and she's lovely...great to see her in this vid as Violetta...love the gown
All negative comments come from a reason. No one needs to say more than good or bad. If you can't take the comments, the please don't post videos with "requirements". Thank you!
Well I'm going to have to disagree. As the poster of this video I can have guidelines. Even if I remove those, I will still erase whatever I find to be silly. If one can't defend there stance than there is no point in hearing it.
Elizabeth and I were students at Indiana University together, when she was just beginning her Bachelor degree with Zeani and I my Doctorate with Nicola Rossi-Lemeni. She was always beautiful, and the voice developed wonderfully. Live recordings do not do the voice justice. And, sometimes, the conductor makes choices that do not show off the voices to their best, cut measures, and write cadenze. We can't always blame the singers. Brava, Elizabeth.
@Vairguy09 Elizabeth actually got her Bachelor degree at Samford University with Elenor Ousley. She got her Masters at IU. Simply stunning, nonetheless!!
Her voice is a little strident for me and her high register starts to sound really tight in the second half of the aria. She needs more of that nice lofty soft pallete space that singers with larger voices tend to have naturally. She jumps off the high notes so quickly that it leads me to believe this was not a comfortable sing for her. At the end her lower register is almost impossible to hear becuase she's not singing smartly.
Love her voice! Just saw her yesterday as Lucia with Fort Worth Opera. Her Mad Scene was out of this world. I agree, however, with those who say that her upper notes (Eb and D) sound a little bit out of control(focus). Her E natural was amazing though! Plus she is so pretty! Brava Liz!
There is no E-natural in this opera. And she hits the E-flat perfectly in the end. Lucia also has an E-flat (not originally, but traditionally done) in her mad scene.
She's terrific here. She would be one of my picks to win the Sempre Libera contest. I saw here 3 or 4 years ago singing Lucia with the Met in Pelham Bay Park in the Bronx (unfortunately, rained out for the last half). She was evern better in person. I also saw Hei Kyung Hong sing this in Central Park 2 years ago and she was also terrific.
Very interesting. I have to give her a 5 for characterization. While I don't agree with many of the choices, hers was a very complete and consistent interpretation. The only place where she dropped out of characterization was just before the second verse, where she repeats the follie follie. Singing was 3. I've heard her do better...
Felicitations! Elisabeth ! Like I told you in person your performance stands between Calas and Sumi Jo! Thank You For a Great Dame aux Camelias! Marie
Ms Futral was absolutely amazing in Chicago's La Traviata! OMG amazing...I couldn't believe she was singing right in front of me. Joseph Calleja was quite amazing too. The 3 hours went by too quick. The only thing I wished I could have done was gone to the stage door and personally told Ms Futral of her wonderful performance. Brava!
To me she seems more like a lyric soprano with a higher extension, not so much as a coloratura. When I saw her at the Met, I thought her acting was better than it is here in this video.
She had to focus so much on singing the high note, she couldn't concentrate at all on acting. And the high note was bad so she just should have left it out. Sometimes she seemed a tad bit sharp, or maybe it is just me.
Lol. You had SO many comments I had to delete. You could have covered all the problems with these two posts. I personally thinking that her acting is great. And I do know that the high note wasn't the best, but her high notes are very, VERY good on a general basis. This was a rare occurence.
If I had thought you were right...I would have left your posts. I'm fair! I actually let people comment with negative feedback as well, as long as I don't feel like they are bashing.
I can't wait to hear more from Futral! I agree with Mr Guizots comments below...and for all you whiney harsh eflat critics...go listen to your perfect eflat recordings over and over again and miss out on Live opera & Life!
Why was it so horrid? Please, I really wish to hear an explanation. Also, what reasoning do you have for saying that neither her technique nor her dramatic abilities aren't "good enough?"
Pace, pace all--this is a live perf. The high e-flats were not even written by Verdi. They are not essential or even in some sense desirable. As for la bella Futral I loved her as Handel's sexy love kitten Cleopatra and she's irresistible here. Appearance on stage matters!
Her timing right at the end of the aria was somewhat off and she sounded winded by shortening the final note. But she really is a youthful and sensual violetta with a gorgeous lyric voice. I also wish that the audience (esp at LAOpera I've noticed) would hold off the applause after E strano because it disrupts the musical and emotional flow of the entire scene. I missed her performance and hope to see another one day.
I don't think this is the LA production of La Traviata, and the tenor is certainly not Joseph Calleja. The production they were in had a roaring 20's theme. I believe the tenor is David Miller (now a member of il Divo). Just thought I'd share.

What a great Version of Violetta, I would prefer a little bit more time on the E's but still very nice just a preference of mine. The voice is very strong and full which is what it needs be not overbearingly loud just because it's Verdi. Yay you!
i just saw 'the first emperor' on pbs ... my god -- was she amazing! and i love her in this role too ... violetta has to be one of the most beautiful soprano roles ever written, imo! and ms. futral does a wonderful job portraying this lovely character. brava!
I think she sounds good. I am working on this aria myself right now, so I know what it takes for it to sit comfortably in the voice. She's got a gorgeous voice, though she's a bit out of pitch sometimes. Not that I care, noone is perfect, but she should not have sung the high note in the end... It is uncontrolled. Everything else was quite good! Her dramatic skills are far better than many other singers I've seen and heard in the same part.
My god, how can you say she is good ? Her technique is bad and the high E's at the end is AWFUL. Listen to Dame Joan Sutherland, who is very impressive and who can sing the high E's !!
Ah, my first basher. So, what about her technique is bad? And why on earth would she be cast at the Met and other famous opera houses if she was SO awful. Look, we don't have anyone in Dame Joan's class anymore, but that doesn't mean you speak badly about a great Violetta. Just because she isn't Joan Sutherland vocally (a: Who is?! and b: she kicks the pants off of Joan dramatically), does not mean you should dismiss her. The next comment this rude will be deleted.
Umm, if Futral isn't a coloratura, someone should tell her to stop singing the rep since she sings Cleopatra, Lakme, Lucia, and others. She is amazing, with that needle-like precision of Dessay with just a bit more depth to the sound. Positively ravishing!
She is opening of the Lyric Opera of Chicago season and is rotating the role with Renee Fleming as Violetta in La Traviata. I dont think Renee Fleming hits these notes so I am seeing the one with Futral. visit lyricopera (.org )for more information or call 312-332-2244.
Just so you know, Fleming is not a coloratura but she does have an upper extension and will often sing high E's. I don't think she recorded it with the E but that is because it's not in the score and looked down on by purists now days.
Ten jillion times better than most singing the role. I am newly in love with her and think she patterns herself after Sills. Netrebko please take note.
see, i'm not a huge Sills fan, but my favorite would be anna moffo. Elizabeth Futral is a future big name though...i believe she just performed otello at the met?
Actually she did Tan Dun's opera "The First Emporer" at the met just barely. She was wonderful in that also. She might have just done Otello, which would be wonderful. And on the Sills comment, I prefer Futral vocally, but Sills is such a believable Violetta.
I know that there are better Violetta's. I agree with that as I've never seen a better Violetta than Beverly Sills. She has an incredible voice though and her acting is equal to her singing in my opinion.
She has a beautiful voice.GREAT!but i think that a great violetta has to be very fragil, very melancolic, romantic, and suffer even in the first act. Here, I can't hear this fellings in her voice. But she's quite good.I like her voice(maybe not for a Violetta, but maybe for a Tosca).:D
I only have this unfortunately. I used to have Addio del Passato as well...but...it disappeared I guess because I can't find it. I'll be posting Da Tempeste from Giulio Cesare some time tomorrow.
I think the tenor was Joseph Calleja if this is from 2006

Everything else was quite good! Her dramatic skills are far better than many other singers I've seen and heard in the same part.

My god, how can you say she is good ? Her technique is bad and the high E's at the end is AWFUL. Listen to Dame Joan Sutherland, who is very impressive and who can sing the high E's !!

What's bad about her technique. Please, enlighten me. I guess I just don't see it as you do.

The next comment this rude will be deleted.

she is absolutely amazing! i hope i get to see her in La Traviata this fall also.

She's amazing...she is absolutely my favorite!

Umm, if Futral isn't a coloratura, someone should tell her to stop singing the rep since she sings Cleopatra, Lakme, Lucia, and others. She is amazing, with that needle-like precision of Dessay with just a bit more depth to the sound. Positively ravishing!

How anyone could say that she wasn't a coloratura is absolutely beyond me. You are absolutely correct in your evaluation.

I cant wait to see her at Lyric Opera this fall doing Violetta!
Lflennoy 4 years ago
Where/when is she doing that? I want to see if I can get tickets!
Iareto 4 years ago
She is opening of the Lyric Opera of Chicago season and is rotating the role with Renee Fleming as Violetta in La Traviata. I dont think Renee Fleming hits these notes so I am seeing the one with Futral. visit lyricopera (.org )for more information or call 312-332-2244.

Just so you know, Fleming is not a coloratura but she does have an upper extension and will often sing high E's. I don't think she recorded it with the E but that is because it's not in the score and looked down on by purists now days.

Thank you so much for posting! (time ago I saw this clip here, but it disappeared and I missed so much)
I am looking forward to meeting/listening to her as Susanna in Le nozze in Vienna in August!

Ten jillion times better than most singing the role. I am newly in love with her and think she patterns herself after Sills. Netrebko please take note.

see, i'm not a huge Sills fan, but my favorite would be anna moffo. Elizabeth Futral is a future big name though...i believe she just performed otello at the met?
tenormcgee 4 years ago
Actually she did Tan Dun's opera "The First Emporer" at the met just barely. She was wonderful in that also. She might have just done Otello, which would be wonderful. And on the Sills comment, I prefer Futral vocally, but Sills is such a believable Violetta.

i have seen better and,as i Said, she doesn't have that fellings in her voice, but she can make up this fact with her acting.CONGRATULATIONS!

I know that there are better Violetta's. I agree with that as I've never seen a better Violetta than Beverly Sills. She has an incredible voice though and her acting is equal to her singing in my opinion.
Iareto 4 years ago
She has a beautiful voice.GREAT!but i think that a great violetta has to be very fragil, very melancolic, romantic, and suffer even in the first act. Here, I can't hear this fellings in her voice. But she's quite good.I like her voice(maybe not for a Violetta, but maybe for a Tosca).:D

I only have this unfortunately. I used to have Addio del Passato as well...but...it disappeared I guess because I can't find it. I'll be posting Da Tempeste from Giulio Cesare some time tomorrow.
