i take japanese at my high school and the spelling thing is wrong but its an easy misconception the character used in the name is "ri" which isnt a true R sound it is kind of a L and R combined thats why theres that joke "do you want fried lice" the japanese have trouble doing R's in the english language

no the original japanese spelling is "Malik"

"Marik" is the english dub spelling.

it's because L and R are interchangable in the Japanese language.

R sounds better in MaRik (when spoken in the english language), so they used it instead of Malik.

Same way in Dragonball Z.

They use "Krillin" instead of "Kuririn", and "Picollo" instead of "Piccorro".
