Keep your onion in the fridge for an hour or so before you slice it. Also, when you cut off the ends, run them under the cold water tap before you slice the rest of it. That definitely helps with the tearing up thing. It also helps if you wear contact lenses, like I do. :-) They protect your eyes.
My husband keeps protective goggles (like you would find in a bio or chem lab, or maybe a wood shop) in our kitchen. He wears them when he chops onions. It works! (I married a nerd. Yay for me!)

I thought fish were pretty awful for a while, but they grew on me. Try salmon to start.
