Honestly, I don't want to denigrate MJ's writing partnerships, but 50% of the song was MJ's moves, so the song on it's own without any production falls a little flat for.

Offcourse he did. And MJ didn't co-write the lyrics, he wrote the lyrics. Cornells different interpretation means the Quincy Jones and Jackson didn't get the money for producing it.
Jackson also owned the rights to the song, so that was extra income for him. Not sure whether it's on a cumulative base though.
Covers are almost never done with the permission of the original artist, and by extension rarely does any extra income come from it. I doubt Chris Cornell's version of this song was any different.
There is always permission from the people holding the copyrights. If not, then there will be copyright lawsuits up the ass. Check the 'you are not alone'-case (Belgian writers whom R Kelly stole the song from and sold it to MJ).
I know there are some, but they're usually high-profile cases like that, or when the original artist is/are dick(s). Most musicians, if they're the real deal, don't care too much if people cover their music. Many, such as Chris Cornell with the American Idol guy, actually if anything consider it to be an honor.

They don't do it because few people are actually stupid enough to cover something and publish it without paying for the rights. If that Idols-guy commercially brought that CC-version out, then he paid CC also, like he should. And MJ got a part of it too. Like he should.

Audioslave covering "Seven Nation Army," Breaking Benjamin covering "Bulls on Parade," Nickelback covering Rage Against the Machine's "The Ghost of Tom Joad" which in turn was a popular cover of Bruce Bringsteen's original. (Somewhat akin to Chris Cornell's cover here, in fact.) Queens of the Stone Age covered a famous drum segment done by Black Flag. Johnny Cash did a cover of Soundgarden's "Rusty Cage." And more. If anything the attitude is prominent within rock music.

Offcourse he did. And MJ didn't co-write the lyrics, he wrote the lyrics. Cornells different interpretation means the Quincy Jones and Jackson didn't get the money for producing it.
Jackson also owned the rights to the song, so that was extra income for him. Not sure whether it's on a cumulative base though.

Covers are almost never done with the permission of the original artist, and by extension rarely does any extra income come from it. I doubt Chris Cornell's version of this song was any different.

There is always permission from the people holding the copyrights. If not, then there will be copyright lawsuits up the ass. Check the 'you are not alone'-case (Belgian writers whom R Kelly stole the song from and sold it to MJ).

I know there are some, but they're usually high-profile cases like that, or when the original artist is/are dick(s). Most musicians, if they're the real deal, don't care too much if people cover their music. Many, such as Chris Cornell with the American Idol guy, actually if anything consider it to be an honor.
As such, while they most likely do have a legal claim to copyright and such, most do not opt to do so. That's what I was getting at.

They don't do it because few people are actually stupid enough to cover something and publish it without paying for the rights. If that Idols-guy commercially brought that CC-version out, then he paid CC also, like he should. And MJ got a part of it too. Like he should.
In early 2000s there was a song 'Addictive' by Truth Hurts, for which producer DJ Quick indeed tried to steal a sample from a Hindi song, resulting in a $ 500 Million lawsuit.

Over-publicized exceptions are still exceptions, not the rule. Cornell didn't get a cent out of Dave Cook singing his song on American Idol. He didn't even know about it until a few weeks later when his forums started kicking up about it.

So the Dave Cook-version wasn't even a hit? I mean, if it was, then CC would've heart about it sooner, right? But I guess he still got his money afterwards, and/or DC had to stop his version. But if not, then still, cases like cook's are the exception.

Oh God, they gushed over it to the point of incredible annoyance, especially since he got credit apparently for the "originality" of the song. It was a big hit within American Idol and played a big role in him winning. But if you don't follow the show very much you wouldn't have heard of it (I follow it sporadically at best and didn't find out until afterwards as well), and I know many if not most rock musicians and rock music fans follow Idol even less than I do. I figure Cornell is the same.

Hmm, well about Idols, I don't follow it. Not the Dutch version, let alone the versions from other countries. But I didn't say that covers aren't done. But I can't imagine that producingteams of acts like Nickelback, Audioslave or Johnny Cash never paid the right amounts of money to the rightful owners of the songs.
From what I've read Cook only unfairly got praised for his 'original' interpretation of MJ's song by the Idols jury, who apparently didn't know about Chris Cornells version.

I can think of several. Audioslave covering "Seven Nation Army," Breaking Benjamin covering "Bulls on Parade," Nickelback covering Rage Against the Machine's "The Ghost of Tom Joad" which in turn was a popular cover of Bruce Bringsteen's original. (Somewhat akin to Chris Cornell's cover here, in fact.) Queens of the Stone Age covered a famous drum segment done by Black Flag. Johnny Cash did a cover of Soundgarden's "Rusty Cage." And more. If anything the attitude is prominent within rock music.

FIRST of all people arguing which or whoever is greatest in ur ears..shud know about the ARTISTRY of one's work..YOU cannot do comparison to anything becoz they are not the same GENRE but to cook a new kind of GENRE out of an old one with respect is a VERY NEAT thing to do to an ARTIST and from the ARTIST.they both get attention of the audience ears anyways.

Who is talkiing about who is the greatest? When Chris was with Soundgarden he made a bunch of awful and hurtful comments about MJ. Then years later he comes back out sayig he wants to make an MJ song "unique" and bring "soul" to it. MJ is the writer of the song. How can you disrespect the artist and then cover their song? And then to pretend as if Billie Jean wasn't ALREADY immensly popular and acclaimed before Chris Cornell ever came across it.

MJ didnt write the majority of his songs you tool. After Cobain, Cornell is arguably the most renown musician from the grunge era, along with Vedder and Layne Staley. Cornell writes all of his material, only when its obviously a cover. Black Hole Sun is one of the most prominent rock songs of the 90's. get your head out of your ass.

How can you say such an ignorant thing? It is on the liner notes and MJ himself said he didn't write them. He wrote 4 songs on Thriller- Billie Jean, Beat it, Wanna Be Startin Somethin, and The Girls is Mine.
He wrote ALL but two songs on Bad- the ones he did not write are Man in the Mirror and Just Good Friends. He wrote everything else.

first off, this cover was made years ago. Long before MJ died. Second, listen to the song all the way through, its pretty good for adding his own twist to the song. its not some song at a bar that someone decides to cover. its totally different and im sure MJ had no problem with it since it was an original "cover".

anyone can play a song and try to make it the same thing or close to the song. but he changed it obviously by ALOT slowed it down alot. and just made it the way he liked to cover the song. i still prefer mj's version by far, just saying. i prefer chris's vocals on superunknown with soundgarden and songs like show me how to live and like a stone or cochise. he's still kick ass, but i think his new cd is him slowing down and calming his singing down.

it was chris cornell who made the first arrangement of Billie Jean. David Cook just adapted his version. This only proves that we could make versions of MJ songs which in fact is hard to do. Be grateful that someone does a great version for the late MJ.
