what is shocking about this event is the little historical similarity that is taken place here... remember the boston massacre? a few colonist (because they werent technically americans yet) where disgrutled with the occupation of british troops in town, and while drunk the colonist started throwing snowballs at a few guards. I think the only logical point of the whole thing is.....When an officer is in plain clothes he is just another person. If he gets hit by a snowball and does not appreciate it, he needs to contact the police and file a citizen complaint. Pulling out a gun could only exacerbate the situation. In this instance he is a citizen who pulled a gun out on other citizens and should be reprimanded, if not charged, as such.
Actually police officers are obligated and required to carry their gun and walkie when they are off duty, just in case they do need to act in a situation. If someone is acting unlawfully and a police officer is at the scene and does not do anything, then the officer can be reprimanded for not doing anything to stop that person. So, he was technically not a citizen pulling a gun out on another citizen.
These cops understood the situation and that is that. If there was any trial they could be witnesses AGAINST the DETECTIVE. BUT why the DETECTIVE did not undergo alcohol/drug tests? the DETECTIVE acted in a bizzare way.

I am a retired School Psychologist and yes this cop has real issues. Snowballs are NOT deadly weapons. He has already been put on desk duty and the political pressure will remove him from the force. what is shocking about this event is the little historical similarity that is taken place here... remember the boston massacre? a few colonist (because they werent technically americans yet) where disgrutled with the occupation of british troops in town, and while drunk the colonist started throwing snowballs at a few guards. Cop lost his temper and had pulled his gun out (important to remember he didn't point it anyone). Crowd saw an opportunity to see how far they could wind him up.
The last time my car got stuck in the crossfire of a snowball fight it ended up with scratches and nicks all over it from the dirt and ice. Should he have pulled his gun out? Absolutely not. Should they have continued to push him when he did? That's just plain stupid.

If you watch the original video, like someone who actual wants to know what's going on (i.e. ME), then you will see a black teen running up and throwing a snowball in his face, hitting him directly on the cheek with a fast moving snowball.

I think the only logical point of the whole thing is.....When an officer is in plain clothes he is just another person. If he gets hit by a snowball and does not appreciate it, he needs to contact the police and file a citizen complaint. Pulling out a gun could only exacerbate the situation. In this instance he is a citizen who pulled a gun out on other citizens and should be reprimanded, if not charged, as such.

Actually police officers are obligated and required to carry their gun and walkie when they are off duty, just in case they do need to act in a situation. If someone is acting unlawfully and a police officer is at the scene and does not do anything, then the officer can be reprimanded for not doing anything to stop that person. So, he was technically not a citizen pulling a gun out on another citizen.

These cops understood the situation and that is that. If there was any trial they could be witnesses AGAINST the DETECTIVE. BUT why the DETECTIVE did not undergo alcohol/drug tests? the DETECTIVE acted in a bizzare way.

A snowball fight during a snow emergency on a still busy intersection........i think all parties involved should be charged.......why didn't they take the snowball fight to Malcolm x park or cardoza or to an open lot. or on the national mall......not on a busy intersection /snow emergecy route while snow plows and cars try to navigate in the snow..........people have lost their mind....

Clearly the uniformed police were embarrassed by the actions of the gun wielding detective. The Detective should be removed from the force before he kills someone. You can't have mentally unbalanced people waving guns at the public.

The detective will not be removed from the force, instead he will receive a hearing and a probable warning, but nothing more.
People were throwing snowballs, especially at cars and that is endangering people's lives.

I am a retired School Psychologist and yes this cop has real issues. Snowballs are NOT deadly weapons. He has already been put on desk duty and the political pressure will remove him from the force. His days of carrying a gun are numbered. His career is over. Even the uniformed police were embarrassed by this abnormal behavior. I bet he has had incidents in the past.

if wielding and revealing a weapon when becoming threatened of possible assault means losing your job then I feel that every participant of the snowball fight should be arrested due to the fact that passing cars were assaulted by snowballs.
Snowballs may be harmless, but that combined with unsafe driving conditions and weather condition, that can stress drivers even further which I am sure through your experience can lead to unwanted accidents.

Oh I will! He is and will remain on a non-contact status until the investigation is over. However, he will not be terminated because technically he did nothing wrong. Officers are allowed to walk into a situation with their guns drawn, as long as they are not pointing them at anyone.

He was off duty and he pulled a weapon on unarmed civilians. He turned a snowball fight into a 'situation' as you call it by waving the gun and taunting civilians. He did EVERYTHING wrong in this video. I had kids throw snowball at my car and I don't freak out with a gun. The man is unstable and should be removed from the force. He is history and you are naive about political pressure.

question - how did he know it was just a snowball fight? Are cops suppose to be clairvoyant? Use a little logic and common sense.
This was DC, you had 200 people in the streets, cars were being hit by snowballs as they drove by. It could have been a riot, a political protest out of control, or a street fight. The point is the cop didn't know and couldn't have known not being gifted with your 20/20 hindsight and a view from the people involved in the snowball fight.

because he is not clairvoyant and not gifted with hindsight. Try to see things from the other side. You're in your car driving by, snowballs suddenly pelt your car startling you, you look out&see a horde of people milling about and snowballs hitting other cars. You're a cop& when you see large groups of people gathered, it's not always a good thing especially in DC. You don't know who is out there because they are covered up. You exit your vehicle with gun drawn&down till you can assess the sit.

It may not be what you want to hear but it is the truth. The detective's hummer was hit by a snowball and he pulled a gun. Yes he did wave the gun in the air and threatened people. There is no excuse for his actions. If he is so correct then why did they immediately put him on desk duty away from the public?

chairde, nowhere in the video did it show him "waving" the gun. His gun was pointed down the entire time. By the time he directly confronted the crowd, his gun was already put away and he had been hit and taunted.

the problem is over reaction. the cop over reacted, the crowd over reacted, and a lot people on the net over reacted with ridiculous melodramatic conjecture. People like chairde would rather resort to heated emotional sound bites rather than coolheaded reason.
When this gets investigated hopefully cooler heads will look at these videos closely& with an impartial eye. They should note that the main vid starts with the officer already out of vehicle so we don't know if he announce himself or not

A man in civilian clothes jumps out of his hummer and pulls a gun. He tells one of the people, "Go ahead throw another snowball". That is the action of an unstable personality. Only a moron would support him. The fact that he was placed on desk duty indicates that his actions were very wrong.
