Lance Guest was really good in this movie and had quite a good career in the 80's but seems to have disappeared such a shame many good actors from this time can't get work these days because of this new breed of actors who quite frankly can't hold a candle to these actors,i guarantee you won't be talking about the Twilight Saga and other modern crap in 30 years time the way people talk about the 80's movies nowadays
This movie was the shit back in the 80's! Hell, it's still the shit! I agree with everyone who said that they don't make em like they used to. Current trends seem to be jaded, with everything being dark and gritty or crazy fluffy color assaults. As god as my witness, if I ever get a successful film company running, I will bring these types of films back.
I never knew the name of the guy who made the theme. And I always felt a rather similarity between this theme and Remo Williams The Adventures Continues. Craig Safan a hidden gem of the 80s.
Ahh, this brings back alot of memories for me, I was 5 when this was released in 1984 and I loved it! A lot of people here are right, they don't make them like this anymore unfortunately. :(
@NitroTab1 there is no shame in crying. I was born in 1980 so my childhood was the 80's. The movies back then rocked and your right they don't make them like this anymore, today is 99% CGI, and hardly any story.
I think the last movie to even attempt the fun of the 80's style was Zathura. I wish more studios did it. Movies like this one The Explorers, Flight of the Navigator, Wargames.. etc that sparked your imagination.. Fantasy and magic movies nowadays are fine and all but astronauts don't dream about being harry potter.
This is one of those movie ideas that had a 50/50 chance to succeed or fail. Fortunately for us all it all came perfectly together. Not only is it full fun thrills, but the pure joy of adventure for the sake of it. Dan O'Herlihy as Grig, and Lance Guest as Alex struck just the right tone in their performances, and that's not forgetting the monumental Robert Preston as Centauri. The score is amazing. 1:16 creates a perfect sense of anticipation.
Anyone looking to get this theme song nowdays cannot go past Erich Kunzel & Cincinnati Pops version on Fantastic Journey CD. Better sounding due to a superior recording and mixing than the original release. you wont be dissapointed.
Yeah , that's a fantastic cd. Good recomendation there buddy. In fact the version on the cd may have a little more punch than even the actaul official soundtrack.
Hey there bud; you wouldn't know where I could find a HQ copy of this would ya? This was one of the movies that inspired my character as a child. Thanks either way.
Dear sir Thank you soooo much for posting this on YouTube! I have been looking for this soundtrack for this movie forever! I never could find it because it is very rare! your awsome!!!!
I think there is still money in this franchise. They need to make a game of it. The freaking graphics would be even better than the original and in real-time no less.
They are real big geeks, they made a downloadable copy of the game for windows which is very close to the real thing. They also made the ACTUAL Starfighter Arcade machine (cabinet) 100% working lol.
I've actually downloaded that once, and let me tell it was excellent in every sense. The detail and layout was awsome even the sounds including the Robert Preston dialouge which was the icing on the cake. I got exited when i scored 900,000 and the game said "Good Show Starfighter!"
I totally agree about the thought of making a modern version of the game. If they ever make a PC version they ought to sell it as a bundle with a joystick console thats set up to look like the gunstar weapons controls including the "death blossom" panel.
If ever there was a movie theme to get your chest swelling and your blood pumping, this is it! Man, this is one of the best movies of all time, right up there with Star Wars and Indiana Jones. I saw it as a kid and it, along with other sci-fi films, inspired me to start a career in engineering so I could build the Gunstar for real.
I grew up watching this movie. I absolutly love it. Made me pursue a career as a Marine Aviator. If you build one, please build another for me. I got ur six my friend.
HeY!!! Aint that the truth! Bring back the feel good and innocense of the late 70's to mid 80's! We have lost something in cinema and It makes me sad... we just got too cool....but it don't wash with me. Bring it back....bring it all back!
I totally agree. It is sad to think that filmakers today care more about realism and quick bucks than actually entertaining the audience. Thats why i'm so particular when it comes to the movies i buy. If i can, i see them in the theater that way if they suck i'm just pinched in the pocketbook once and i'm not stuck with a horrible film on my DVD shelf. Hollywood has lost the magic touch and we need it back now more than ever.
Hey wolfman :o) Im really to make a difference and my mothers been backin me for the last decade.. have a lok at the trailers to low budget film on my home page I play lead in them all... it was difficult to find the roles but hey... I managed it... Feel good film is my life :o)
I checked out some of your trailers, and i must say they were really excellent for being low budget. Awsome work ! Although the "GOT" one kinda caught me by surprise cause at the end i was like "What the f***!" LOL. Nice twist though.
Absolutely love this film, especially the soundtrack. Thank you so much posting this. It's such a hard soundtrack to come by. If any movie begs to have a sequel, this would be it.
By the way, if anyone hasn't tried RogueSynapes' version of the Starfighter arcade game, get it. Its an exact replica of the game and totally worth playing too.
It's a shame more movies like this arren't made. There was some kind of Magic in filmmaking in the 80's that seems to have been lost. Stories like The Last Starfighter are almost non-existent today. I have been hoping for a sequel, and will definitely be in line if one comes!!
I love this movie, when I was kid, it made me feel good that I could be and do anything, I hope Hollywood does not try to pull a remake of this movie. They always seem to ruin good 80's movies by re-doing them.

Greetings, Starfighter! You have been recruited by the Star League to defend the Frontier against Xur and the Ko-Dan Armada. Get ready! Prepare for blast-off!
A music theory aside... When the synth/glockenspiel arpeggiation comes in over what sounds like the 2nd scale degree (2m7 chord), the apparent result is a 2m9 with a sharp'd 7 which gives that delicious dissonant tension (almost a noir-ish sound). I think it coincided with a startunnel graphic in the film, but it looks like genius in counterpoint analysis (at least to me).
Craig Safan is the man... He gets a smidge of the Korngold feel while keeping it futuristic - exactly what the story needs. The brass portion of this arrangement is really beautiful, especially during the rounds (trumpets, then horns, then trombones). Nice man, nice... Where have you gone, Mr. Safan?
