Not, only is this sung superbly but with a perfection of enunciation...and thus graspable and understandable! - a real achievement for someone singing Handel!
I was eleven years old in 1941, but I recall those wartime years and on Sunday afternoons, there were recitals on the BBC- classical. Having heard this recording,
there is a familiarity of Isobel Baillie's voice and I am almost certainI last heard her, those many years ago. What a wonderful voice, such purity and expression which one does not hear these days. My apologies if am biased.. 22231143 Basil

Ravishing voice with superb attack, full-blooded orchestration, stately pace - this has never been bettered. A statement of defiance while Britain was being bombed. I can almost hear the bombers over London.
As a young man I loved Isobel with this lovely rendition. I first heard it live with the great Joan Sutherland in 1968 at the Albert Hall in London. This was another gorgeous experience.
@HM0880 No matter one's faith, or whether one believes in God or not, one cannot help but be moved by Isobel Baillie's sincere and beautiful rendition. The same was said about Jenny Lind's performance of this piece. How Lind sounded we will never know, but Baillie's voice fortunately is recorded for all to hear, and it is a heavenly sound indeed. Thanks for sharing, HM, and thanks to roy13820 for posting!
This was always my favorite part of the Messiah

I'll bet the angels and saints gathered 'round when this lady sang.

Sublime. This is such a moving recording of Messiah. One of the best. I have it on LP as a box set.
Recorded smack bang in the middle of the war, it must have brought some much needed hope and inspiration at a very low time.
