  • You should do this and then use it to watch the displacement of iron shavings! that would be cool!

also, if there is only a north pole, couldn't you use this as a magnetic motor of some sort?

  • I wonder what exposure to super cold temperatures would do to the monopole allen-wrench.

  • See if a magnet is repelled depending on the pole you use.

  • You weakly magnetized the end of the Allen wrench... the results are not surprising.

  • could you re-do this exact example with a compass so you can show if the compass is turning (spinning) around. To eliminate of earth blocking south pole?

  • Way to not line the detector up antiparallel to the north at the back end. The bend in the wrench doesnt magically make the magnet redirect 90 degrees. The south pole should just be at the bend, exactly antiparallel to north, because thats the alignment of the field created by the coil

  • @eoe1177 I have already tried a straight piece of the same metal and I get the same result. It doesn't matter if the rod is bent or not there still is no opposite pole. Besides, your theory doesn't make sense otherwise a horse shoe magnet wouldn't work.

  • How long does it stay like that. Does this make the steel last longer?

  • I once worked a job carbon treating steal parts to make them harder (stronger) I think what happens to make the steal stronger is that all the atoms in the steal becomes aligned & rigged to streighten the metal.. anyway.... cool video...( The outer brunt bluish surface of the metal from the carbon heat treatment probably might be what helps controls the magnet flow ) I don`t know. but it is very interesting to say the least.

  • Can you please try this experiment with a very short piece using same metal composition, about 1/2 inch to 1 inch?

  • @Jamie,

How long will it stay magnetized?

  • @wasuretta I don't know for sure but the Allen wrench in the video stayed magnetized for several months before Marko came over and we cut off the bent end. The heat killed the magnetism so we charged it again and I let Marko take it home with him. Don't know what he did with it after that.

  • i remember when. and i knew at the time it was something amazing. i tell my friends about it now and then. it stuck in my head. would mono pole magnets overcome the problems with magnet motor? hard question i guess. but what a great easy way to make them. peace

  • what are the applications of this?

  • I think this may have to do with the effect a Rodin/Powell coil offers: spiining up a neodynium ball, and after ceasing to energize the coil, the neo remains to be driven, even at 10ft away. Pathway or capacitance, or both?

Time will tell. And the way you invent new meaning to ancient work, your work with the monopole will once be explained also.
