Saying she is part time lord is like saying "My mother has a Ph.D therefore I am half-Doctor." LOL! Now wouldn't that be stupid?
Sadly Moffat and Russel are basing a lot of their stuff on what they saw as a child. And clearly they didn't understand a lot of what they saw or heard on the show back then. I know some people don't consider these books cannon but I think they are a heck of a lot more cannon then a lot of the newer books. They were meant to be a companion to the tv story.
cont :The members of each Chapter were bound together by a complex web of family and political alliances, and by one over-riding purpose-to compete with all rival Chapters. And of all the different Chapters, the Prydonians were the most aristocratic, the most powerful, and the most ruthless.
I of course enlarged the bit about how few Gallifreyans were actually Time Lords. So any nonsense that some very silly people have been saying about River being Part time lord is pure BS! lol
I also found in the book 'The Deadly Assassin' where it the following is mentioned :Spandrell smiled ruefully. There was more then a little truth in the old Co-oridinator's jibe. The Time Lords were themselves a kind of aristocracy. Relatively FEW INHABITANTS OF GALLIFREY WERE OF TIME LORD RANK. And this elite group was itself sub-divided into a number of societies or chapters, Prydonians, Arcalians, Patrexes, and so forth.
You know, if you count Dimensions in Time (1993), Sophie Aldred had the longest tenure as the current companion (whereas Janet Fielding and Liz Sladen was it for three years). 1987-1993... Or 1996, if you go by when they introduced a new companion.
Mel really never seemed to fit into the Doctor's life that well. She just seemed... annoying. I consider her really a transitional companion between Peri, who had a great relationship with 6, and Ace, who had an adorable father-daughter relationship with 7.
The only consolation is that future writers can do away with this childish rubbish that moffats been doing. People can like it all they want but there will always be writers who don't like something the previous writers did and figure out some way to change it. Such is the nature of Dr Who. @sallyjosie while i do not neceisarrily agree with your assessment of Moffat i do comend you sir for your even handed attitude which wuite frankly is soarly lacking in this fandom
@227060 LOL! That's madame. But never mind, some clever fella pointed out something rather interesting about the whole parking brake debate. at the beginning of one of the episodes with Martha Jones the 10th Doctor ran down a list of things that needed to be done before they took off and releasing of the parking brake was one of them. And it still made that whooshing noise so Moffat needs to study not just the classic Who but the Who that he was a staff member of. lol
@sallyjosie Apparently it was Andrew Cartmel's idea, but John Nathan Turner flat out rejected it. It's one of the few decisions of his I actually agree with.
And the new series at least does it with a wink and a nob, usually. I find that's the best way to do that kind of stuff. Now "Torchwood" on the other hand...
@JamesOhGoodie LOL yes, and while I know I am a goody goody at least Torchwood is geared towards adults. Doctor Who whether a children's show or a family show, the fact is that there are 8 yr olds watching and hearing really gross inappropriate stuff that has no place on a family show. River is the grossest most inappropriate character ever. It's like Moffat can't make up his mind. But now he has pretty much locked her in a sociopathic villain. probably a female version of Glitz.
Acutally I've heard recently a rather interesting theory as to River Song is. someone is speculating that she is in fact a manifestation of the Tardis. So she and the Doctor aren't really married. In 'The Two Doctors' it was revealed that all Time lords had a symbiotic relatioship with their Tardis. And the 9th Dr did say once that the only one he was "married" to was the Tardis. Of course that was just a figure of speech and lets hope moffat is smart enough not to take it any further then that.
@JamesOhGoodie His first 2 years sucked. Stupid stories and bad acting. But his last year was fantastic. Curse of Fenrick and Survival really stood out plus they started developing Ace's character a lot. I also liked Ghost Light when he took Ace back to Perivale in the past to face her fear.
@JamesOhGoodie yeah uits true. smae goes for Colin baker. thankfully the big finish stuff shows us the both of them can be incredible when given the right material
There's a little something for everyone in this scene - for those who, for whatever reason, like the stick-thin persuasion, as well as those of us who greatly prefer the more, um, *realistic* proportions... ^_^
Having listened to the audio adventures, it's pretty obvious that the Sixth Doctor and Mel sucked on TV because the production team was incompetent. People criticize JNT a lot, but from I've read Eric Saward (the script editor for some of the Davison era and all of Colin Baker's era) was a vindictive douchebag.
IMHO, one of the all-time greatest scenes in Doctor Who history. "The homelees traveller in his Police Box. His days like crazy paving." Brilliant. The Doctor being so self-reflective while at the same time trying to suppress the emotions of say good-bye. Much like the 4th Doctor's farewell to Sarah. And what a beginning for Ace and the Doctor, again IMHO, the greatest Doctor/Companion team ever. Though I do think the 11th Doctor and Amy are pretty good. :-)
Wish we could find out what happened to Ace after 1988's Survival , cos she wasint in the TV Movie with the 7th Doctor . I have looked her up on Wikipedia , and it says that she either died , left him after falling out with him , ended up on Galliffrey etc etc .
Maybe we will never know Ace's true fate . . . . just hope it was a happy one : )
@doctorwhoone The reason Ace wasn't in the movie was because of the way they wrote the script and I believe Sophie Aldred being unavailable to participate. I know they wanted to do a tie in from Survival to the movie.
There's several dimensions of sorts in regard to what happened to Ace - my guess though is the Dorothy they mention in the most recent "SJA" was in reference to Ace and not Dorthea "Dodo" Chaplet, so if that's true, she left on good terms.
@GrayGhost2020 Its good to read that someone else also sees that scene when SJ mentions Ace - because there is a similar Dorthea - which is Dodo in the original series from Hartnell's era.
@DanDruffification When Ace first encounters The 7th Dr. and Mel on Iceworld, she apparently assumes The Dr. is some sort of teacher or scholar by the way he is dressed. When The Dr. suggests that he came to Iceworld to explore the legend of a Dragon in the Ice Tunnels, Ace asks if she can come too. THE DR.: "Won't you get in trouble with your boss?" ACE: "Nah, I'm fed up with being a waitress. Oh, go on, Professor, let me come too." She starts there and carries on, despite The Dr.'s protests.
Bonnie Langford was not popular because her hair style makes her look unattractive. When she has any other hair style though, she's quite bangable. I would probably bang her even with the ugly hair.
its a shame we never got to see what happened to ace, she went off travelling with the doctor on the last episode when it got cancelled and then she wasnt there in the tv movie, maybe she got killed along with the tardis.
If I'm not mistaken, then the music that starts at 0:15 is another arrangement of the music that plays during the Doctor's final speech in Survival. That's a nice bit of continuity! Anyway, this is a lovely scene.
From this point on, I remember becoming a bit of a DrWho fan as a child. McCoy and Sophie Aldred were simply a brilliant double act, whereas now they can't come up with anything better than the "female assistant wanting to jump in bed with the Doctor" routine.
Saying that, I do wished Peri and the 6th Doctor had got together and had little Time Lords and Ladies! ^_^
@SamusDrake I agree save that Donna didn't want to jump into bed with the Doctor. It's one reason I really like that Rory is also on board with Amy and the Doctor - it tempers that constant rehash of storyline in the current run.
@jadewarlock Unfortunately the writers might be trying to make the Doctor hook up River Song which would be extremely gross. If she turns out to be his mother now THAT WOULD BE COOL! but who knows? Some writers have terrible taste in women and think that complete dogs are lookers. hopefully the writers will limit the amount of time that horrible character shows up next season. oh and some can't figure out how River could be his mother because she looks different from that other woman seen at
Well you can't be Romana because The Doctor has met Romana before.
As to his mother, the books established that Leela was the biological mother of The Other, who was re-incarnated as The Doctor. It's still very easy to reconcile that history with the chick from The End of Time being his mom though. She could have just been his foster mother. People on Galifrey are born out of a big soup. Perhaps she was assigned to raise the soup baby Doctor and is his mother in that way.
@CaptainAntlers uh, did you mean she can't be Romana? Well, given that she is a time lord or time lady yeah, she could theorectically be River Song except I give the character Romaan waaaaaay better taste then to regenerate into a revolting drag queen! And if by some weird stretch of the imagination those morons try to make her Rose my question to those half-wits is WHY? What did Billie Piper or any other former Actress do to deserve being treated in such a shabby manner? They all deserve better
@jadewarlock the end of 'End of Time' I'm certain most fans have figured out that she being a time lord could easily regenerate and then use one of those watches to become human. And I'm glad that Rory and Amy ended up married. Now if they would only answer the question of River being the Dr's mother. And I would be outraged if they dare make her Romana or The Rani. That would be unacceptable! Both characters deserve better treatment then that. Let's hope the writers have gotten the message. :-)
@SamusDrake It's even worse now. With that mega creep river song. She is so obnoxious I just want to reach into the tv set and strangle that b*tch. She needs to go and quickly. She is not interesting. She is irritating. And as for that moron moffat he just stole the idea from that boring book The Time Travelers Wife'. His storylines are so stupid. I know its a chidlrens show but making it into a "fairy tale" was an awful idea. He needs to go back to comedy and leave dr who alone.
Yeah, River Song was okay for the first time she showed up, but she becomes a bit annoying with her "Cat bugler" routine.
I find Moffat's episodes far better than Davis' who's tactic was "If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, then baffle them with bullshit!". Plus the "Cardiff'n'Gay" routine was really annoying...
I think the latest series was the best so far, but still has too much stupidity in it - none more so than the final episode where they act like idiots.
@SamusDrake your right. I guess I get so angry that I forget to be fair. Yes, Moffat does have some talent. I don't care about awards, but that 10 minute 2007 Childrens In Need Special was really good. I actually got a little teary-eyed at the end. So why can't he write like that? And yes, she was good in silence in the Library but the whole "I'm going to be the most important woman in your life" bit is nauseating to say the least. Several stories could have been good if he had left out about..
@sallyjosie 2 or 3 things from each episode. He should NOT be the head writer. Maybe he should step down and just be part of the staff and let someone else step in as the head writer. But alas with his wife as one of the Producers of Dr Who and his over-sized ego that's not likely to happen anytime soon. If he did I think the show would improve immensely. Oh, and river songs smugness makes me want to slap her. And Moffat has referred to anyone on the internet who disagrees with him as "bonkers".
I think giving too much away - especially verbally - is a bad thing for a serial. I reckon River Song would do better as a Time Lord herself, and keeping her cards to herself. "Friend or foe" sort of thing, perhaps with a reference to "The Time Meddler"...
Also, oh god, I couldn't stand that character in the last series - "I'm the Queen I am!". Nice actress, but given some dumb dialogue. It really sounds stupid...
@SamusDrake I think River song's storyline should be wrapped up as soon as possible. And then we never hear or see her again. However if she is not the wife or if she's married to a clone of the Doctor like rose presumably is then I can maybe learn to like her. But only if she stops with all the annoying "spoilers" crap. It is so stupid. I can think of 2 or 3 ways to alter her storyline so that she is a little more likeable. Right now, according to one poll 52% cant' stand her.
@SamusDrake I agree. And some guy over on Live Journal wrote an essay outlining things I had missed. Like how she tells the 10th Doctor that he's not really the dr yet?! And the thing about the Dr leaving his brakes on. If that was true, then why did The Master's and The Rani's Tardis' make the same noise. I don't see either one of them making such a mistake. And he points out other things. I have heard others say they like her on other TV shows so I'm guessing the problem IS with the writing.
I've hardly watched any of the latest DW series. Should really catch up on iPlayer...
Alex is a great actress, and does give 100% to DW, but they aren't putting her to good use. At the moment, as far as I can tell, shes just a replacement for, John Barrowman. Christ, if Russell Davis was still in charge, those two would have ended up married! o_O
@SamusDrake Tom Baker is my first. I started watching because my older brother got me interested. I just read that RTD made ret Capt Mike Yates gay in either a book. What a load of crap! I mean there would be nothing wrong with that except that Mike Yates was always flirting with Jo Grant! That idiot just wants to make all the characters gay. If he wants to have a gay character, then make one up ala Jack Harkness. There's no reason to change the old ones.
I have to say, although he bought DW back to our screens, I'm glad he's no longer running the show.
I remember episodes of the Peter Davison and Colin Baker years when I was little(born in '79), but Sylvester was my first Doctor as I was old enough to understand the show. LOL, Terror of the Vervoids scared the crap out of me when I first saw it back in...'86? Then the Doctor just changed into a new man! OMG!
@SamusDrake I didn't like too many of the stories of the 7th Dr but I did like Sylvester as the Dr. I thought he added a new dimension to the character. But the stories like 'The Happiness Patrol' were just too silly. It was like the writers were trying to get out of their contracts with the show. I did like 'Delta and the Bannermen'. That one was pretty good, in spite of the silly FBI agents. I thought the way the Manager came to Mel's defense was not only brave but unusual for a non-regular...
@sallyjosie They probably didn't make a mistake; they chose to leave the brakes on. Also, perhaps they like the sound the TARDIS makes when it materializes (a lot of Doctor Who fans do).
Also, because the Doctor's TARDIS takes six people to operate normally but the Doctor is only one person doing the job of six people. It appears that the Master's and the Rani's TARDIS also takes the same number of people, so they are doing the job of 6 people and therefore must not do some things.
@mitmfan sorry not buying the bs that either RTD or Moffat made up because its so stupid. All these Time Lords traveling alone in a Tardis and there was never any mention of six people being needed to fly it. Plus the older Tardis console was much smaller so six people would have been bumping into each other. I like RTD better then Moffat, but sometimes he came up with a few stinker ideas too. And the whole brake thing is dumb. Its a spaceship not a car. There is no "parking brake". dumb idea.
good old Sly! He gets alot of stick but that's because he had alot of bad stories in his era, but I think he's portrayal was excellent. He's definitely one of my favourite doctors.
Wonder if Moffat got the idea for the out of sequence meetings with River Song from the Mel idea. Just took it a step further or a couple of steps technically,
In some ways, this man hasn't changed a bit... allways trying to avoid that "departure-situation" and struggling with how to tell her all the stuff he probably wanted to...
Something about Mel's voice sounds surprisingly cute in this
"Ace!!!" Ace is my favorite classic companion! My favorite new series companion well, I like all of em out of Rose,Martha,Donna and Amy I like all of them but Donna's funny
I really liked Mel. She had to best exit, maybe cos she wasn't afforded an entrance. I heard JNT was gonna do her 1st after 'Trial Of A Timelord' but when Colin Baker wasn't allowed an entire season following on from 'Trial' and didn't wanna stay locked in a contract for a few months for just one serial then they decided to recast the Doctor and Mel's 1st story was dropped.
If you wanna know how her 1st story could have been, find a copy of the PDA 'Business Unusual' by Gary Russel. It's tops!
Bollocks!!!! You cut out my favourtie scene of all 'Dragonfire' where Stellar goes to walk into the TARDIS before her Mum comes and gets her. The music that plays as She reaches up her hand to the Police Box door handle is brilliant. Oh well, have to wait for the DVD release....
Great Scene. Although it's a shame that they cut out the Scene afterwards where Fenric's Shadow (The Little Girl) Smiles as Ace has stays with the Dr. Then a Close watch, a Game of Chess or 2 in Lady Painfort's Study, Oh.. & funny how the Daleks found out about the Hand of Omega!! Hmmm... !! It was all part of Fenrics Plot. He still lives now. The game goes on. Evil against Evil. As long as Evil lives, so does Fenric. AKA Fenris - The Wolf in Chains, that was bound for his rapid growth.
This was a lovely scene. Bonnie Langford had confided in Sophie Aldred that she was leaving and the scene was hastily re-written by Bonnie and Sylvester McCoy on a napkin in the BBC canteen and handed to the producer just before the cameras rolled. Just shows how much emotion can be conveyed in a little bit of spontaneity
My mistake- just checked to be sure and it was indeed Andrew Cartmell together with Ian Briggs. Would have been quite romantic if Sylvester and Bonnie had written it themselves though.
I think the New Adventures novel "Set Piece" by Kate Orman, which I understand wrote Ace out of the novel series had such a scene. And I think Ace returned for Paul Cornell's "Human Nature" novel which was the final story for the 7th Doctor, as far as the NA was concerned.
Aww, this was such an enjoyable scene! Thx for uploading =]
I liked Mel & Ace the same: Ace's spunk & energy was great, and Mel could always pull a smile out of me; I'd want her for a best friend--she always tried to help strangers before helping herself.
It wasn't so much the character people didn't like; but a case of Bonnie being miscast. John Nathan Turner himself confessed that he only cast her because he was looking for a redhead and she was the only person he could think of.
According to Mel's character biog, she is a computer programmer- yet none of this technical ability comes across in Langford's portrayal. OK, she could only do so much with the scripts given, but the character was pretty much nothing more than a screaming cipher.
@sunnytyler001 IMHO a lot of it was Bonnie's voice and the fact the scripts made her scream a lot. She wasn't happy with that at all, and I think she pretty much requested that for the Big Finish Audios she didn't have Mel scream a lot.
I have to say - that request has greatly improved Mel for the audios. Mel is by far one of my favorite companions in the audio series. On TV, I have to admit that I liked her better with the Sixth, but she was not nearly as bad a companion as say Adric was.
@sunnytyler001 I agree - I love Langford as Mel, though I do think she'd been better with Colin's Doctor than Sylvester's (Though she's not bad with the latter). She was just given horrible scripts and had to scream instead of developing her character. I think that was the reason she left, and has mentioned she only will do the audios so long as she doesn't have to scream.
I missed Mel!! i was yoing when she was the companion, i never had the sarah janes or the leelas to love....but i had Mel and she was excitable and MY companion!! she has improved so much in the audios! its a shame some sad dr who fans cant get over their disgust for Bonnie and Mel!! i love them both!! and Ace too hehe x
The one thing I hope they learnt was never to throw a companion in without an introductory story. It meant Langford didn't have a starting place, the audience found it hard to sympathise with her and reduced the companion role to a perfunctionary level that worked against her, McCoy and the show.
In the Virgin New Adventures it was revealed that the Doctor actually influenced Mel's decision to leave him so that he could fulfil his seventh incarnation's 'destiny' as "Time's Champion" without her 'tedious moralising'
I actually liked Mel, but felt she was better paired up with Colin Baker in the TV series. A lot of her problems character wise IMHO was the dodgy scripts and HOW they had Bonnie Langford act. If you listen to the audios, she's improved quite a bit, as has Sophie Aldred and Sylvester McCoy IMHO (ANd I like all three characters ;) )
sigh...I had such a crush on Ace...

Also, someone needs to put up a video of just the 5 seconds of Ace going "ACE!"

Bonnie Langford was not popular because her hair style makes her look unattractive. When she has any other hair style though, she's quite bangable. I would probably bang her even with the ugly hair.

SamusDrake 1 year ago
@SamusDrake I agree save that Donna didn't want to jump into bed with the Doctor. It's one reason I really like that Rory is also on board with Amy and the Doctor - it tempers that constant rehash of storyline in the current run.
jadewarlock 1 year ago
@jadewarlock Unfortunately the writers might be trying to make the Doctor hook up River Song which would be extremely gross. If she turns out to be his mother now THAT WOULD BE COOL! but who knows? Some writers have terrible taste in women and think that complete dogs are lookers. hopefully the writers will limit the amount of time that horrible character shows up next season. oh and some can't figure out how River could be his mother because she looks different from that other woman seen at
sallyjosie 1 year ago
@sallyjosie
CaptainAntlers 1 year ago
@CaptainAntlers uh, did you mean she can't be Romana? Well, given that she is a time lord or time lady yeah, she could theorectically be River Song except I give the character Romaan waaaaaay better taste then to regenerate into a revolting drag queen! And if by some weird stretch of the imagination those morons try to make her Rose my question to those half-wits is WHY? What did Billie Piper or any other former Actress do to deserve being treated in such a shabby manner? They all deserve better
sallyjosie 1 year ago
@jadewarlock the end of 'End of Time' I'm certain most fans have figured out that she being a time lord could easily regenerate and then use one of those watches to become human. And I'm glad that Rory and Amy ended up married. Now if they would only answer the question of River being the Dr's mother. And I would be outraged if they dare make her Romana or The Rani. That would be unacceptable! Both characters deserve better treatment then that. Let's hope the writers have gotten the message. :-)
sallyjosie 1 year ago
@SamusDrake It's even worse now. With that mega creep river song. She is so obnoxious I just want to reach into the tv set and strangle that b*tch. She needs to go and quickly. She is not interesting. She is irritating. And as for that moron moffat he just stole the idea from that boring book The Time Travelers Wife'. His storylines are so stupid. I know its a chidlrens show but making it into a "fairy tale" was an awful idea. He needs to go back to comedy and leave dr who alone.
sallyjosie 1 year ago
@sallyjosie
SamusDrake 1 year ago
@SamusDrake your right. I guess I get so angry that I forget to be fair. Yes, Moffat does have some talent. I don't care about awards, but that 10 minute 2007 Childrens In Need Special was really good. I actually got a little teary-eyed at the end. So why can't he write like that? And yes, she was good in silence in the Library but the whole "I'm going to be the most important woman in your life" bit is nauseating to say the least. Several stories could have been good if he had left out about..
sallyjosie 1 year ago
@sallyjosie 2 or 3 things from each episode. He should NOT be the head writer. Maybe he should step down and just be part of the staff and let someone else step in as the head writer. But alas with his wife as one of the Producers of Dr Who and his over-sized ego that's not likely to happen anytime soon. If he did I think the show would improve immensely. Oh, and river songs smugness makes me want to slap her. And Moffat has referred to anyone on the internet who disagrees with him as "bonkers".
sallyjosie 1 year ago
@sallyjosie
SamusDrake 1 year ago
@SamusDrake I think River song's storyline should be wrapped up as soon as possible. And then we never hear or see her again. However if she is not the wife or if she's married to a clone of the Doctor like rose presumably is then I can maybe learn to like her. But only if she stops with all the annoying "spoilers" crap. It is so stupid. I can think of 2 or 3 ways to alter her storyline so that she is a little more likeable. Right now, according to one poll 52% cant' stand her.
sallyjosie 1 year ago
@SamusDrake I agree. And some guy over on Live Journal wrote an essay outlining things I had missed. Like how she tells the 10th Doctor that he's not really the dr yet?! And the thing about the Dr leaving his brakes on. If that was true, then why did The Master's and The Rani's Tardis' make the same noise. I don't see either one of them making such a mistake. And he points out other things. I have heard others say they like her on other TV shows so I'm guessing the problem IS with the writing.
sallyjosie 9 months ago
@sallyjosie
I've hardly watched any of the latest DW series. Should really catch up on iPlayer...
Alex is a great actress, and does give 100% to DW, but they aren't putting her to good use. At the moment, as far as I can tell, shes just a replacement for, John Barrowman. Christ, if Russell Davis was still in charge, those two would have ended up married! o_O
So Sally, who was your first Doctor? ^_^
SamusDrake 9 months ago
@SamusDrake Tom Baker is my first. I started watching because my older brother got me interested. I just read that RTD made ret Capt Mike Yates gay in either a book. What a load of crap! I mean there would be nothing wrong with that except that Mike Yates was always flirting with Jo Grant! That idiot just wants to make all the characters gay. If he wants to have a gay character, then make one up ala Jack Harkness. There's no reason to change the old ones.
sallyjosie 9 months ago
@sallyjosie
OMG!
SamusDrake 9 months ago
@SamusDrake I didn't like too many of the stories of the 7th Dr but I did like Sylvester as the Dr. I thought he added a new dimension to the character. But the stories like 'The Happiness Patrol' were just too silly. It was like the writers were trying to get out of their contracts with the show. I did like 'Delta and the Bannermen'. That one was pretty good, in spite of the silly FBI agents. I thought the way the Manager came to Mel's defense was not only brave but unusual for a non-regular...
sallyjosie 9 months ago
@sallyjosie
Was that the one with Ken Dodd and that green alien baby? That was a good laugh that one.
Happiness Patrol was very cheesy, but I loved the Candy Man. He scared the crap out of me when I was little! O_O
SamusDrake 9 months ago
@sallyjosie They probably didn't make a mistake; they chose to leave the brakes on. Also, perhaps they like the sound the TARDIS makes when it materializes (a lot of Doctor Who fans do).
Also, because the Doctor's TARDIS takes six people to operate normally but the Doctor is only one person doing the job of six people. It appears that the Master's and the Rani's TARDIS also takes the same number of people, so they are doing the job of 6 people and therefore must not do some things.
mitmfan 5 months ago
@mitmfan sorry not buying the bs that either RTD or Moffat made up because its so stupid. All these Time Lords traveling alone in a Tardis and there was never any mention of six people being needed to fly it. Plus the older Tardis console was much smaller so six people would have been bumping into each other. I like RTD better then Moffat, but sometimes he came up with a few stinker ideas too. And the whole brake thing is dumb. Its a spaceship not a car. There is no "parking brake". dumb idea.

It's tops!

Yeah I know what you mean; I liked that bit too. Don't you think it was interesting the air of mystery Stellar had- why was she there?

I think the New Adventures novel "Set Piece" by Kate Orman, which I understand wrote Ace out of the novel series had such a scene. And I think Ace returned for Paul Cornell's "Human Nature" novel which was the final story for the 7th Doctor, as far as the NA was concerned.

sunnytyler001 2 years ago 28
It wasn't so much the character people didn't like; but a case of Bonnie being miscast. John Nathan Turner himself confessed that he only cast her because he was looking for a redhead and she was the only person he could think of.
According to Mel's character biog, she is a computer programmer- yet none of this technical ability comes across in Langford's portrayal. OK, she could only do so much with the scripts given, but the character was pretty much nothing more than a screaming cipher.
pufferfishish 2 years ago 15
@sunnytyler001 IMHO a lot of it was Bonnie's voice and the fact the scripts made her scream a lot. She wasn't happy with that at all, and I think she pretty much requested that for the Big Finish Audios she didn't have Mel scream a lot.
I have to say - that request has greatly improved Mel for the audios. Mel is by far one of my favorite companions in the audio series. On TV, I have to admit that I liked her better with the Sixth, but she was not nearly as bad a companion as say Adric was.
jadewarlock 1 year ago 2
@sunnytyler001 She's just a bit 2D. Coulda been much better with some more backstory... Still knocks the socks of Rose.xD
TheOnComingStorm121 1 year ago
@sunnytyler001 I agree - I love Langford as Mel, though I do think she'd been better with Colin's Doctor than Sylvester's (Though she's not bad with the latter). She was just given horrible scripts and had to scream instead of developing her character. I think that was the reason she left, and has mentioned she only will do the audios so long as she doesn't have to scream.

Is it just me or did the ending of this clip seem really pervy, it seems the doctor wanted "something" from Ace, if you know what I mean haha
lukeosborne 2 years ago
