I'll bet you dollars to doughnuts Richard Thompson smiled in approval when he heard this. Takes balls to cover this song and this my first exposure to Christy Moore....it wont be my last i assure you,,,, i like !
@400OTD correct my friend very difficult song to take on and as always christy delivers in his own original way, if u like christy listen to a song written by willie Mc carthy about the legend Jack Doyle u will enjoy i gaurantee!!!!
Anybody that says christy moore has ever sang a song without feeling it, has never really listened to his music, in his own words every song he sings brings him someplace different in his mind, Thompson is a legend and the words to this are just amazing "maybe thats the price u pay for the chains that u refuse " Enjoy both versions !!!
christy takes songs like this and changes some words and puts his own spin on them. and to say that there is no feeling put into it is nonsense. this man has nothing but passion for the music he does
omg, this has ruined a beautifully perfect song. the only good bit is the chorus. i much prefer richard thomson and listen to his every day while in the car.
;) my opinion.
he has a weird accent and isnt nearly as good at the guitar.
@Madeline365 I myself think you are idiotic and stupid and have no respect for music and musicians. Educate yourself, and show some respect for a great musician.
@mrkeetz if your going to call something idiotic stupid or even retarded dont be surprised that your going to get replys and before you once again say that you think that its an ok song stop contridicting yourself
There is a version that should be heard by a man called Jez Lutton which is the original and best pity it cant be found on this site!!! Christy even gets the words WRONG
I much prefer this cover to thompson's, don't get me wrong i know thompson wrote this, and deserves the credit, but that said i think there's a lot more emotion in this version, and christies voice is perfect for the song.
Not for me I'm afraid. This version is too sing-songy but no soul (or emotion) like you get in RT's version. Very good diction though and great guitar on this.
whao 20Norton goaway and calm ur box!!! id love to see u sing that song and see how many responses u get back thats if u can get the words out of ur mouth thats full of shit. its not who sings. its about the song.
How pleasant to get into a reasoned discussion with someone with such an eloquent command of the English language.
Of course it's about the song, and Moore destroys every element of beauty and feeling in it. As someone has commented, he makes it sound like Val Doonican.
Now: if you want to argue, fine, but don't bother if all you're going to say is "shit" and such-like. It really isn't necessary, dear.
@20Norton. thats your opinion....and talking about things bein necessary, is it necessary write negative comments?....why dont u just not listen to this version if you dont like it?..... just a suggestion.
If you're saying that we shouldn't criticise things we don't like, then I can't disagree more.
Christy Moore is a Great Singer. No question.
He demolishes this great song. My
opinion.
And no-one on here, yet, has told me why I should think differently, other than by telling me to "shut up", in so many words, which is really constructive, isn't it?
As to the suggestion about not listening to this track. I do just that, via the skip button. The rest of the album is brilliant.
I'm sorry. I love (most of) Christy's music, but he absolutely murders this song, loses all its sadness, wistfulness and poignancy and turns it into schmaltzy rubbish.
a real unique song .... great imagery , great passion , Christy Moore complements it also even if the richard thompson veersion is also beatiful .... a real true christy fan is what i am , have always been , his music connects with the real irish people. Maybe this is his greatest achievment of all. Forever your Christy
Nice alternative guitar style. However, RT's almost tudor guitar style, coupled with his punchy vocals is more earthy. I prefer RT's almost peudo-Geordie folk accent for this song (I know he's a Londoner!).
Christy Moore....that voice....makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck. I absolutely love his version of RT's song....pure poetry brought to life. I wish he could do more live dates.....I wish I could just turn up to a pub and find him singing away in the corner....such a rare and beautiful talent....lovely wee man.
Paulo Nutini sang this in Dermot O'Leary's show on Saturday. It's the most beautiful version of this song I have ever heard. It's still avalable to listen to on BBC i Player!!!!!! Listen to it and you will be moved.
I heard it too and have been searching ever since for a copy of it! didn't know the song before. His version is so beautiful...why the hell didn't he put ti on his new album?!
christys voice and thompsons guitar would be the ultimate for this song. i no christy isn't trying ta steal thompsons credit but rather let more people enjoy his work.
Nowhere near as much emotion in this version as in thompsons. Moore's version is not as intricate and lose's lots of the original intention of the loss expressed in RT's original.
i think this song is beautiful both songs have their own personality both unique both brilliant "you might be lord of half the world yil not own me aswell!!!!!!!!!!!" explains it perfectly
Ah come on you don't have to say which you prefer people!!!! Both versions are obviously heartfelt and capture the imagination and spirit behind the song, which is sometimes a hard thing to do when you haven't written a song yourself!
He has a pleasant enough voice, but I have to agree with those who say that this version is too "bouncy" and lacks the haunting quality of the original (Richard Thompson wrote this song, for those who don't know). Also, RT is by far the better guitarist, the arrangement on his version is amazing.
He's amazing but I can't stand not watching them play. I am guessing he's playing with Declan Sinnot, since they've been touring together for a few years. RT is the best songwriter and this cover is gorgeous.
What a completely twattish thing to say. There are people who have only heard Christie's version, is this your attempt at persuading people to listen to Richard Thomson's version? I like both versions but prefer Richard's but yours is the comment of an opinionated arse! Music is not a competition.
While I love Christy Moore's voice, this version is too bouncy for my taste. The beat just isn't right. It seems to lose that haunting quality that comes through beautifully with Richard Thompson's way of singing it.
