this IS when wrestling was best! what makes me wonder is why we bought into them soo easy? they looked old enough to be our parents then.. love them tho! they should all still be around even tho taker is barely
I can't believe they turned Jake heel with this.. it would of been interesting fued.. him and the Undertaker! Oh well.. WWE went crappy with this story line if you ask me!
@Greg4fun I think it would've been a great feud between Jake and Warrior. These vignettes were really well thought out and executed. Warrior ended up getting fired, ruining any chances of this feud coming to full fruition. That's why they ended up putting Jake with Savage.
This happened before the Ultimate Warrior was going to fight The Undertaker in a body bag match that wasn't on TV. Jake tried the help the Warrior find a way the defeat the darkness. But in my opinion the darkness of evil took control of Jake, mind, body and soul. That's why he turn heel. But that's just my opinion.
Take it to the limit and you don't want a piece of the pie, you want it all? Aren't those either lines or parts of songs from Scarface? Kinda funny a crackhead made a reference to a movie about cocaine.
Jake does a great job as usual, but I think Warrior made it believable. The idea of a fearless warrior finding a weak spot was what sold me. Warrior became a realer character after this set of promos. Some call old WWF childish, but it's pretty deep once I look back on it. This deals will real issues - fear of death, conquering inner demons, etc. Warrior's Shango and Taker/Snake angles had me halfway believing wrestling. The nWo was the only thing I really fell for after that.
@Hexed4Life You're selling Warrior way short. He made these promos with the amount of raw emotion he put into them. Without him Jake's cunning intelligence wouldn't be nearly effective.
ohhh ohhh the ultimate warrior... this is when jake the snake and the wwf was at it's best... now it's all about cena the pena peanut butter fruitty pebble yab ababababba doo doo.
@crazieone3 Yeah I hate it when people call early 90s wrestling cartoon or for kids, but It was just costumes and hairspray covering far more realistic storylines than they have now. Real as in they apply to real life, not "I wan't to beat you and take your title!" This is one of the darker angles of the early 90s, and one of the best as well. 90s wrestlers looked like adults with real managers. Today it looks like a bunch of frat boys fighting over stolen titles and trophy bimbos (divas).
@JohnACorp782, I would have to agree. He was super weak. True, he was a tough customer to the average person, but against Taker he was helpless. His ego did him in, too.
@Genojames Didn't realize how corny it was either back then. Man those were the days. It was cheesy but had intense characters. Today WWE storylines are redundant and dragged on.
The storyline became so silly when Jake was "supposedly" training Warrior for a "battle" against Taker. Warrior just did not seem he would ever be strong enough to challenge the younger, taller, and infinitely more powerful challenger.
I disagree,Jake was involved in the darkness character & the black hearted psychoanalysist wrestler before Kevin Sullivan came w/the whole Dungeon of Doom in 1995,this was back in 1992/93.
Holy crap that was an awesome job on his part and hes missed in the wresting world. It would be good to see him doing SOMETHING in the wrestiling world again.
I can remember buying into this whole thing as a 10 year old. Looking at it now, I don't see why. Warrior suffocating in the coffin the first time still has some dramatic effect, but this follow-up is ludicrously over produced. The one with the room full of snakes is even sillier.
I laughed out loud at the sudden zoom and Psycho music cue, when Jake opened the coffin.
@russelltriggerJake had turned heel at this point because this was supposed to be the start of a feud between the two of them, but the Warrior got fired shortly thereafter for holding Vince McMahon ransom.
Jake was a great heel! He was also very deadly with that DDT! I would like to have seen him defeat both Taker and Warrior with that move! I cannot believe he was never the WWF Champ!
Fuck! Why can't we have GOOD segments like this anymore? Yeah it was cheesy and over the top, but damnit, it was ENTERTAINING!!! Vince, are you listening?
It was downhill for the Warrior when he was "consulting" Jake for help on how to fight Undertaker, who was a billion times too strong for him, anyway. That much was so laugh-able. I just never bought it. Jake simply had never pinned the Taker. Therefore, what qualified him to give any advice to the Warrior on how to beat this bigger and stronger foe? Again, it made me laugh.
Maybe Vince was just squeezing out the Warrior with such silly storylines? He turned him into the Ultimate Idiot.
True. Seeing Snake Roberts turn evil was no surprise to me, however. Any guy who played with snakes as often as he did just couldn't be much of a hero in the first place. He made that nitwit Warrior look even more incredibly stupid with this lame storyline.
Jake is one of those few guys whose face/heel turn is more based on the people he feuds with, not any changes in character. which makes the Bret/Austin Wrestlemania anglethat more great. the two managed to switch while still each other.
I think you missed the point. Jake wasn't helping the Ultimate Warrior to boost his strength. Warrior was already unquestionably stronger than the Undertaker. This angle was based on Jake helping the Warrior think like the Undertaker.
The angle was very cool & very well acted out, but seemed a bit too late since Warrior & Undertaker already had many matches around the country by this time. These training segments took place in late July-August, after they already had many matches.
Stronger than the Undertaker? I just did not find myself convinced. Warrior used so many of his routine clotheslines but to absolutely no effect. He was too short to "stand up" to Taker. There was also no way he could put him into the Gorilla Press move, either. Warrior just seemed too weak, thus looking more like the "Weakier" to me when trying to tangle with the Undertaker...
You are right that Taker and Warrior had already fought many matches. Did they ever exchange any "clean" pins?
Well the clotheslines had no effect since he didn't sell them. Undertaker is bigger than the Warrior but the Warrior was a former bodybuilder & does have a greater muscle mass. He gorilla pressed Hogan back when Hogan was a monster & slammed Andre & Earthquake. The Undertaker is no slouch, but strength-wise the Warrior is stronger.
I don't think they exchanged pins. I know the matches where Undertaker wasn't DQ'd were won by Warrior.
I have the bodybag match from the 7/91 MSG show where Warrior put him in the bodybag & zipped it up. I also have the match from Rampage 91 that ended in a DQ. I looked at results of other matches & they were either DQ's or Warrior victories, but I don't know if any were pinfalls or if all were bodybag victories.
Undertaker did lose by pinfall a few times before Tuesday in Texas. I watched a match where Tito Santana pins him in Spain. I also have one from Hulkamania Vol 6 where Hogan pins him.
Well it was kayfabe since Damien was not really in the bag. But yeah. I know most of the times they showed that scene it was censored, but there was an uncensored shot of that which I have.
After seeing the Warrior look when he came out of the coffin I think it would have been cool if they ended up making him a heel and joining with Undertaker and Jake the Snake Roberts. What team they would have made.
A shame Warrior turned into a jerk and was fired by Vince, this feud with Jack the Snake could have been great, But Noo he had to be greedy if the stories are true about him wanting more money or no showing Summer Slam.
I think he was the best when he first showed up in WWF and didn't have that high pitched voice. Like the Funeral Parlor angle where Undertaker blindsided the Warrior & locked him in the coffin. I liked the way he said "You're scared" in that southern accent. He was creepier like that. They should have kept him that way.
Jake was without a doubt one of the best minds in wrestling of all time it's so unfortunate that the alcohol and drugs cost him that. He was great. All you have to do is watch this and the storyline he had with the macho man. young wrestlers need to see this stuff and learn their craft
Agreed. Sylvester Stallone once said "wrestlers are the best impromptu actors in the world." though this clip was scripted, these guys were true pros and selling their characters.
They should have saved Undertaker's very 1st WWF appearance for the attack in the Funeral Parlor & named the Jake training Warrior angle as the Covenant of Evil after later on revealing that Jake planned to have the Undertaker attack the Warrior so he could gain Warrior's trust & ultimately get him with the cobra. The angle was awesome the way it was, but would have been even better had they done it the way I just explained it & had Warrior stayed.
That same music played in the original showing of the angle where he buried the Warrior in the grave (seen in part 2 of this video). The final training session in the snake pit had different music, but it was also eerie.
I remember reading somewhere Jake's heel turn is still held up as an example to young wrestlers on how to turn/act heel. The best heel turn in wrestling history, those Hollywood writers ruining WWE programming today should take note. Also proof wrestling doesn't have to be close to reality to be good. It is supposed to be an escapist from of entertainment.
I wish these guys weren't dead

lol this is absolutely ridiculous
mid-91 - early 92 feuds are really plot-heavy and a bit overwhelming:
Jake vs Martel / Jake vs Quake / Warrior vs Savage / Hogan (+Warrior) vs Slaughter / Warrior vs Undertaker (+Jake...)
Jake vs Sid Justice / Jake (+Taker) vs Savage / Taker (+Flair) vs Hogan (+Justice) (Warrior fired, Justice off injured)
Taker vs Jake / Savage vs Flair / Hogan vs Justice / etc
gets a bit much to get your head around!

looking back... paul bearer really went a little overboard with his character, lol

I think he was the best when he first showed up in WWF and didn't have that high pitched voice. Like the Funeral Parlor angle where Undertaker blindsided the Warrior & locked him in the coffin. I liked the way he said "You're scared" in that southern accent. He was creepier like that. They should have kept him that way.

that scared the heck out of me when I was little I even thought the Warrior was dead lol

Jake Roberts was a really good actor.

That music during the Jake training Warrior segment is fucking creepy as fuck...
BethPhoenixFan 3 years ago 3
That same music played in the original showing of the angle where he buried the Warrior in the grave (seen in part 2 of this video). The final training session in the snake pit had different music, but it was also eerie.

I remember reading somewhere Jake's heel turn is still held up as an example to young wrestlers on how to turn/act heel. The best heel turn in wrestling history, those Hollywood writers ruining WWE programming today should take note. Also proof wrestling doesn't have to be close to reality to be good. It is supposed to be an escapist from of entertainment.
