Again - similar story ! We were there too, all of us just old enough to drive. I had six of us (inc me) in my two door Cortina, my mate had 7 in his big Falcon 500.
Never forget at the start of the concert...music starts eerily and down from within the "roof", comes Peter Garret curled up like a giant parrot inside this triangular frame... fucking awesome !
The drunk race home to 'nulla was epic , made better only by me beating Johnny D in his big Falcon, RIP Bear - one of our great nights out
I was at this concert, if it was the Sunday night gig. Anyway, I went with 3 friends when we were 16. We had no tickets and somehow built up enough courage to start asking people outside the venue if the had spare tickets to sell. This was quite intimidating for a bunch of 16 year olds. Anyway, we ended up getitng six and selling two for a profit, our "seats" were 10 feet from the stage. It was the first real concert for us and it was pretty mind blowing. Left with ears ringing and very sweaty.
@gregmc315 awesome story dude - mine is similar, but 20 years ago, and it was the Easter Show with Brain Teaser and Hoodoo Gurus. Then I saw them live at the Ent Centre. Would have caught one of the sticks had it not stuck me in the side of the head during the drum solo........ Welcome to real live music.
This would have to be the greatest concert in the history of music. I love the versions of "Lucky Country" and "Don't Wanna Be The One". Have seen them many times but really wish I had've been at this one.
Have seen them at least 22 times live!!, Started at 15 at the first Noosa Aussie Hop, supporting the Skyhooks, last ever concert, , Far out, could never look back... That was it for me!!
Anyone who has not been in Peter Garrett's position the one he is now, would find it difficlut to understand the demands someone of that position gets he has to please a lot of people and what he did in midnight oil and now is not really that different.
Guys guys guys. Screw the politics and what Peter Garrett does now. When I first saw the Oils I was living in Germany. I'm from Canada but we were stationed overseas and a friend had gotten a tape of videos and on it was the Oils playing Best of Both Worlds. I was hooked. They had raw energy, sound, passion and Peters stage presence was great. I must have watched that clip 100 times over. One of Australia's greatest exports!
let me just say this. politics isnt for the weak and peter garrett is not weak. he is a good poli but a fuckin awesome singer. i respect anyone who can be both
damonsanchex: performance art is performance art...politics(i.e. the art of the possible)is not for the faint hearted...including armchair philosophers...many are called, but few have the guts to try to change the system from the inside....go Pete !!!!!!!
'Change the system'? Peter Garrett hasn't tried to change a damn thing since joining Labour. Damonsanchex is right, he doesn't stand for anything now.
You kids should feel so ripped, in the 80's we could catch the Oils,Chisel,The Angels,Aussie Crawl,The Radiators and a plethora of less well known great live acts at local pubs like the Venue, the Espy the Corner etc for less than $10 .Get pissed , sometimes get layed have a great night. The Record Companies and the recession of the late 80's royally cruelled it for everyone.
i love there music im 17 years old and my dad loved this song he is dead but this song was great im going to online convert this video and put on my phone only takes 3min at the most so yea
This is how rock was supposed to be before the record companies sucked the life out of it. Most top 40 bands couldnt do a live show that would be 5% of the Oils energy. Bring back Giffo !
I've been blessed to see the Oils live six times including one of thier last gigs at the Regent and they could come back tomorrow (wish they would )and still be on top.
I don't know what "growling" (do you mean growling?) is but if you look at 1.30 you will see one of the road crew run across the stage and none too gently remove a punter (audience member) who was climbing up on stage, the removal was not a problem ,but it wasn't done in the way that the Oils liked their fans to be treated and Peter wasn't going to wait until after the show to make sure it didn't happen again
Oils are the best. I taped this back in 1983 off of USA Networks show "Night Flight", anyone remember that show?? Was pretty cool back in its day. Anyone know where I can get a dvd of the Oils concert at the Capitol? My tape is shot! Have the Oils dvd, but is not quite the same. Thanks
There's a DVD called 'Best of Both Worlds' which has this set from the Capitol Theatre and the Goat Island set. Easily the best Oils DVD of them all :)
Ha,ha, I forgot about Night Flight. I used to stay up to watch it all the time. It always had some great bands! I've seen the Oils twice, once at Merriweather Post Pavillion.
Pine Gap is a US run Intelligence/Spy Base in the center of Northern Territory. Look at a map of Oz and the massive area is marked as a Restricted Area. Australia is a participating member of the US/UK led Echelon System, along with NZ & Canada. Sad but true!
I've lost count of how many times I've seen the Oils in concert, awesome gigs. Their lyrics have so much meaning!
He had such power and passion....Recently I can't help thinking he sold himself out for the power with not much of the old passion left....I hope I'm wrong...its better to die on your feet than live on your knees
i totally agree with you i mean on the topic on the new US base in Australia. I mean look at the song us forces that is such an awesome song. But now hes gone and shifted his beliefs and is in support of the base. I wonder what goes on in his head sometimes but i totally agree lots of power but no passion I MISS PETER!!!! he was better in the oils.
I LOVE PETER i wish he would just go back to playing music instead of being the spokesman for the ALP i mean i see where he is coming from but he made way more of a difference with his singing in midnight oil and beside I MISS THEM!!!*little silly tear runs down face* *starts dance like peter*
Yes. I loved him in the Oils too.. but if you want to see him kick butt again, see to it that it is the Federal Minister of Climate, Environment and ARTS!.. Then he'll have the Power to express his passion any way he sees fit.
yeah did you hear about him changing his position on us military bases in australia he said than he was in support of the new base i just cant believe it i mean i never thought that he would do that. it makes me said.. to he that that is his position
Do you really think he would be Environment minister-in-waiting had he made a fuss about things he in all honesty can't affect at this time? I agree that it's sad that politicians can't be themselves, and instead strive for mediocrity (in the public arena at least) but the fact is the ALP wouldn't dare let him speak his full mind and frighten the general public...
The era of outspoken politicians in positions of power died out with Keating in 1996.
