Christianity has flaws, but most Christians are decent people. With that in mind, the Bible needs to be re-written.

It's time we replaced it with a different book that doesn't blackmail people with Hell, condemn gays, deny Evolution, or advocate the stoning of rape victims who didn't scream loud enough. Let's combine all the Gospels together into one consistent plot, add just enough backstory to provide context, make it more focused on the characters and their interactions, (cont.)

@occultdude17 Agreed, most Christians are decent people. Just as are most atheists. Religion doesn't have an impact on that...although few zealots are decent people, I would say.

Bible versions do change a bit with time...but alas not nearly fast enough to keep up with reality.

@Underlings It's because they change the wrong things. Translators try to twist specific passages to make the Biblical authors seem less stupid, without stopping to consider if the overall message should be preached to little kids.

When I get the time, I intend to re-write the Gospels in the style of a fantasy novel, making them readable, Jesus relatable, and ensuring that it's the sort of stuff we WANT kids to read about, without being too unfaithful (pun intended) to the original text.

Just a thought on parents killing their children to send them to heaven.

If you're a christian you have to believe that the kids did go to heaven (meaning that they were right) or that they are in hell (as the catholic church has stated that there is no purgatory).

If they went to heaven then wouldn't your life be better spent freeing the souls of thousands of children even if it meant burning in hell forever?

Societies, where there is a robust welfare state and education system and the least difference between the very rich and very poor are shown to be happier, and to have less crime (This is the same list you cited for the least religious). Are they less religious because they are better societies or are they better societies because they are less religious? I suspect that it is the former, ie if people feel safe and happy, they don't need the delusion of of a religious comforter.

@1empathy I mentioned the correlation without specifying the cause of the correlation, since I don't think there are definitive answers on which is the cause and which is the effect. I also mention it in my Morality video. I think the most telling correlation is intelligence and education with atheism. The smarter and more educated one is, the more likely one is to spot the flaws in religious arguments, understand naturalistic explanations, and strive for more equitable societies.

My opinion (not researched, but i've read and experienced stuff that influences me) is that religion is less important when you expect your children to live and prosper. I agree on education, although in the UK we have a pretty good education system but our muslim population either refuses to send them to state schools or re-educates them at saudi funded madrassas tio counteract any rerason or science. As i said, I like your style :o)

It's a disturbing trend when people "re-educate" children to discredit science. We see something similar to that in the US with home schooling. Really a bad precedent....

@Anglichanen The evidence for the Holocaust is overwhelming. Eyewitnesses from thousands of soldiers from all over the world, photographs, testimony from the survivors, the paper trail...but I agree deniers shouldn't go to jail.

What makes the Jewish deaths so horrible is HOW they were killed. Dying while fighting is one thing; being exterminated like rats is another.

I don't know a LOT of Jews, but those I do know are some of the least offensive people I know.

In reading this it reminded me of how Xians wiped out entire cultures. The Spanish Church, wiped out untold valuable scientific (Astronomy & medicine) tablets of the Aztec & Inca...& who knows how many others we don't even know about.

It's hard for me not to harbor a deep seated hatred for them. Some of the things they did to us isn't mentioned in history books, & often isn't told to many non-Indians. The early Xian church was the epitome of evil...after their Mafia leader, that is.

@sapperbloggs You're right about that--it's called Godwin's Law, I believe. Hitler and Nazis are overused in arguments, but mainly inappropriately. In this case, though, we're talking about the ultimate evil God, so it makes sense (to me, at least) to compare him to the ultimate evil human...and most people would say that's Hitler. And it's especially apropos because Hitler believed he was doing God's work. I don't think anyone else fits the argument quite so perfectly.
