@Kathy0851 U're telling me to grow up? Really?? I don't think there's any correlation btn a person's maturity and a liking for a city. And u are judging quality of life of a city solely base on the number of homeless people?? Look who is the immature one here.Just for ur information, most of the homeless people living on Hastings St are not originally from Vancouver. They are from all over Canada and the only reason why they move to Vancouver is because it is the warmest city in all of Canada.
People who hate Vancouver obviously has never been to tiny Singapore. I urge haters of Vancouver to visit that tiny island in South East Asia which has ridiculously expensive housing and road vehicles, sky high cost of living, underpaid jobs, two times more rain than Vancouver, super hot and humid all year round, overcrowded and lack of beautiful nature. Their views about Vancouver will change forever.
@Zac6230 Vancouver is not a town but a city. And Vancouver beats Singapore hands down in every aspect. Try living in Singapore for just 2 weeks and you will appreciate Vancouver more. ;)
@jkwc88 it's a dinky town, a village it's not a city or even close. I went to to Singapore 10 years ago it was ok. I despise vancouver it sucks hard. Im glad I left
@jkwc88 get over yourself! Vancouver sucks! The homelessness in the Hastings district is disgusting and shows what a low quality of life you have there. Grow up!
@Zac6230 It couldn't be farther from a town if it tried. What, do you have an ex-girlfriend who dumped you who lives in Vancouver? Or can you not make any friends? Loser.
@Zac6230 I think you'll have a difficult time convincing anyone that 2.3 million people constitute as a "village". If I were speaking as a 12 year old, I would be communicating to you in a manner too advanced for you to understand.
Hey all....no place on earth is perfect..good grief. But I do know that vancouver is particularly green and clean. Both great things to appreciate. American cities are dirty and badly planned. Too much urban sprawl. Nothing uglier than massive and bland sprawling suburbs.
Auckland and Wellington New Zealand are the two newcommers in the top ten livable cities. New Zealand has it all, Alpine mountains and pastuers, tropical and Med type beaches, etc., all on one big island. However, its too isolated and I don't feel comfortable being surrounded by so much ocean down under. Sydney does not have the diverse geography. I am a Europhile and favor the continental lifestyle. Any large city on the Alpine foothills of Austria, Germany, France & Italy would be my best.
Haha as a born and raised Vancouverite I can take a little ribbing on our fair city. Personally I'm surprised it kept making those livability lists- while I adore it here, I would think more affordable cities with better economic opportunities (maybe like Montreal or Seattle) would have ranked higher than Van.
Any city in Australia is more liveable than any city in Canada. I visited Canada last year and couldn't believe the homelessness and social issues in the East hastings district - very depressing. Sydney has a very laid back, beachy lifestyle and the people in Sydney are more friendly. Many Americans and Aussies find Canadians aloof and unfriendly. Sorry, but you are seriously over-rated Vancouver! The truth is Vancouver is rather boring, however, Victoria is another matter. Gorgeous!
@Kathy0851 Sorry there bud. I lived in Sydney for a year last year, and I can tell you that your statements are completely untrue. In Sydney, it'll take you an hour to get anywhere near a beach, thanks to brutal traffic, a horrible transportation infrastructure, and horrible architecture.
@Kathy0851 Seriously, have you guys ever heard of anything other than brick? And Bondi beach, ever heard of a train station actually being NEAR your top tourist attraction? Bondi junction doesn't cut it. Sydneysiders are most definitely not friendly, nor is Sydney even close to laid back. The women there can't even leave the house without 6 inch heals and a pound of make up on their face.
@Kathy0851 As for aloof? I find this amusing coming from one of the most uneducated societies I've ever witnessed. But you being Australian, you were probably drunk when you were analyzing Canadian society. Americans don't find us unfriendly, nor does anyone else in the world. In fact, Canadians are known for there extra-friendliness around the world.
@Zac6230 Canadians are known as some of the most friendly people in the world. Seriously, just Google it if you don't believe me. Sorry if you got burned by one, but you seem like a massive douche so it doesn't surprise me. Quit being so jealous.
@Kathy0851 East Hasting is horrible, but all big cities have your areas. We choose not to have brothels and legalize prostitution, so that's what you get. Vancouver never claimed to be perfect. However, Vancouver was indeed rated more livable then any Australian cities for many years, and is currently tied the number 1 rated place to live in the world. So, sorry about that dear. Sydney = huge thumbs down.
Vancouver is not, and never will be, the best city in the world. I know that Sydney is. Sydney has the most stunning, shimmering harbour and beachy lifestyle in the world. Vancouver's harbour is OK but it's dead & lacks the nightlife, ferries and stunning vistas of Sydney. I also found Vancouver depressing with real social issues in the E Hastings district. Sydney is a bigger city and has a "buzz" that Vancouver just does not have. Also there is the WEATHER and that can't be underestimated.
@Kathy0851 Vancouver is an up and coming world city. Sorry that it's more well-known than Sydney. World class infrastructure, rated a better place to live than Sydney, and it's much more naturally beautiful. You know, there is another building method other than brick and mortar, Sydney.
@Zac6230 I don't even live there, and I can see that it is one of the great cities of the world. Certainly one of the most beautiful. I'm not sure how you can argue that it's not a world city since the Olympics were just held there. You sound like a jealous American.
@jjppvvee I have to say you represent the average pompous Canadian to a tee. Get over your stupid self! Canadians have such an incredible self esteem problem because the rest of the world thinks they are America's 52nd State - and you ARE. However, Americans are a lot friendlier ... sorry you can't take the truth, chum - now get over it!
@Kathy0851 Don't get your venomous snakes tied up in a knot now. I am an American living in Canada. Victoria to be more precise. Canada is the closet ally to the United States, and its more important trading partner. We are similar in many ways, and I'm proud to have ties to both unique countries. Every American I know loves Canada.
@jjppvvee sorry you are so jealous, you idiot! Vancouver is NOWHERE as nice as Sydney - never was, never will be. Vancouver is wet, miserable and has a harbour that is BORING without any sign of life. Sydney is a sparkling, multicultural city that full of cafes, restaurants and best of all MAGNIFICENT SUNNY WEATHER (do you remember what the sun is). The only people who say Vancouver is great are people from that city - even other Canadians don't like it.
@Kathy0851 Calling me an idiot? Sounds about right for an uneducated Aussie. I lived in Australia for a year, last year actually. In Surrey Hills, Sydney to be more exact. To be honest, I think Sydney is the most overrated city in the Western World. It's suburbs are dilapidated and unkept. It's infrastructure is beyond underdeveloped, I mean, 2 lane motorways for a city of 4.5 million people? Truly pathetic.
@Kathy0851 And as for Vancouver, I am not Canadian, nor do I live in Vancouver. I have been there dozens of times however, and in terms of facilities, infrastructure, ease of living, physical beauty, the downtown core, the suburbs, and the people, it is indeed superior to Sydney. Also, I live in Victoria, BC. You'll be saddened to know that we get the same amount of rain, and daily sunshine hours as your precious Sydney. Sorry to burst your balloon.
@jjppvvee Sydney is a much larger city that is a world class city with world class facilities. How you can even compare Vancouver with cities like Sydney, LA and NY is beyond comprehension. Vancouver is a tiny little town by comparison. Sydney has nearly 5 million people - I don't believe you have even been there. The Canadian city of Victoria is very nice though and a much more livable place that Vancouver - but you still have that shit weather!
@Kathy0851 I'm glad you brought that up. Sydney has almost twice as many people as Vancouver, and yet it's a far inferior city in terms of quality and amenities. Probably due to the pervasive Australian "she'll do, mate" mentality. I liken going to Australia as going back in time culturally and socially about 50 years. Just as Sydney does not and cannot compare to Vancouver, Australia does not and cannot compare to Canada.
@Kathy0851 The fact that you think Sydney is on the same world scale as LA is laughable. Both cities have around 4 times the population of Sydney. Not even comparable. And - same goes for Vancouver.
@Kathy0851 And yet still, NY and LA are both less expensive housing market than Vancouver, proving that Vancouver is in fact a more desirable place to live. Both are dirty, shitholes.
@jjppvvee once again you show your ignorance. Just because you lived in the inner city areas of Surry Hills (where most of the houses would sell for twice as much as anything in Vancouver) - you cannot judge everywhere in Sydney by the same standard. The southern and northern beaches areas of Sydney have large magnificent homes with an average price of over $1.8 Million to $4.0 Million - my own home is over $2 Million which would buy and sell anything in poor old Canada!
@Kathy0851 Australians like yourself really need to get educated. Refer:
Google the most expensive housing markets. You will see that Vancouver has displaced Sydney as the second most expensive housing market in the world, after Hong Kong. That means housing is MORE expensive in Vancouver.
Vancouver is MORE expensive than Sydney. Read it. Let it sink in a little. Now go cry in a corner.
@jjppvvee ,.... and that doesn't include the fact that the pathetic Canadian dollar is only worth 93 Aussie cents ... haha, your economy sucks as well as your city! I notice that you are the ONLY one on this site and losing the battle against Sydney. Don't bother replying - you dumb Yank! Isn't it strange how you run to their defense considering that 90% of Canadians hate and loathe Americans ... funny, eh?
@Kathy0851 Canadians are our closest ally. They are also an original member of the G7 - the 7 most powerful economies and countries in the world. Australia is not. It simply doesn't have the GDP, global influence, and power of either Canada or the United States.
The Canadian dollar might be worth slightly less, but no matter, because consumer goods are about 3 times cheaper in Canada than they are in Australia. Go to Darling Harbour and try to buy a beer for 4$ - not gonna happen.
@jjppvvee how come one of our LARGEST immigrants come from Vancouver (many of them escaping the bitter cold of BC). I've spent a lot of time in Vancouver and Canada so I know what I'm talking about. My nephew LIVES in BC and can't wait to get back to Sydney! If you have a look at the LATEST 2012 listing, 5 Australian cities are in the top 10 and Melbourne is at the top. Vancouver has been demoted because of its lower quality of life.
@Kathy0851 I'm not sure exactly what you're talking about due to your improper grammar (few too many beers today, mate?), but Canadians are not even in the top 20 when it comes to immigrants to Australia. In fact, my girlfriend was born and raised in Sydney (Chipping Norton), and left when she was 22 to move to the Pacific Northwest (Victoria, Canada). She likes everything better here, and cannot imagine going back.
@Kathy0851 By the way, I completely agree that Melbourne is better than Sydney in every regard. It's much more like Vancouver - but still inferior. The only reason Melbourne won out slightly this year (for the first year) was due to a geographical error in the Greater Vancouver area (seriously - look up the Malahat). It's also worth pointing out that three Canadian cities are in the top 5 cities in the world, according to that same list.
San Francisco and Seattle have more character. Seattle is surrounded by world class mountain ranges, Olympics and Cascades; and close to the ocean. San Francisco has the kind of charm that takes a hold of you and is certainly more vibrant. Vancouver feels like a retirement community of high-rise glass and steel towers.
@jjppvvee True, Vancouver is nicer looking, at a glance, than Seattle and Frisco. I enjoy visiting Vancouver from Seattle. It is a very "livable" city and enjoys a worldly top five ranking in that category every year along with Vienna, Austria and a couple of Swiss cities. There are some drug problems, but no sign of gangs and/or thugs. The Public Library is architecturely unique. I could go on and on with positives. However, I feel no attachment to it. Century City in LA is similar.
@Zac6230 I agree with you! jjppvvee works for the Canadian Tourist Office. I've travelled to Vancouver many times and it never fails to disappoint. The homelessness along Hastings is sad.
The end was kind of funny because of the whole "Raincouver" thing... but hey, that's what keep our grass green! Regardless, though, a city surrounded by mountains and water is surely a unique living experience. The air is quite nice and very breathable; minimal smog. As for the downtown east side; sure it's very ghetto and sketchy but there are poor neighbourhoods like this in almost every city. Poverty is common but it is unfortunate that change is slow at improving its conditions..
Well... If 15 bucks an hour is maximum you can make, you probably won't afford living here. Even 18 an hour make it tough ))) And if you don't like rain in winter, go to Alaska.
This so true .. Vancouver sucks !!! Lots of homeless people, drug addicts, cheap labours, cold .. dark .. gloomy .. rainy weather 3/4 of the year. Summer is beautiful though .. but only 8 to 9 weeks. The problem with Vancouver is the Unaffordability to live. Cannot do the outdoor activities. You are so so right, my friend ! I love the Video .. You are telling the Truth !!
@GoodG4U2 Vancouver is is beautidul but there is another side its beauty people dont want you to see. Like you said the homless, the druggies, gangs, crime. ect. Why doesnt anyone do a documentry on that???Or even write a letter to the government. In the documenty's about Vancouver they only show the good side cause thier to embarssed to show that inside Vancouver its like a 3rd world country. You got to have money to survive there.
I'm curious what the point of this video is? To persuade the viewer that Vancouver isn't the best city? If that's the case it's a weak video because it never gives any cities that are better, just names other cities that are bad to live in for the same reason (real estate).
@RainAngel111 a LITTLE rain?? 9 months a year of perpetual rain is not a LITTLE rain! I grew up in LA and NY and I have NEVER experienced depression like I experienced while living in Vancouver for 4 years. Not seeing the sun for that long a period of time is not healthy, mentally. BC has the highest suicide rate in Canada, yet nobody talks about this. The only people who don't have a problem with the weather in Van are the ones that grew up there, period.
@hayo456 funny you should comment, "hayo456". I'm actually living in the desert now where it's 75-118 degrees and almost never rains. My career is soaring, I'm making lots of money and I've never been happier in my entire life. Thank you for taking the time to comment! (ps: a little advice: invest in a dictionary. If you're going to "complain" about something, it will help your credibility if you know how to spell it. Cheers!)
Vancouver is a shity city, i hope a massive earthquake destroys it.

@JIMBOSKI58 Sorry bro, Vancouver is nicer looking than Seattle and Cisco. Get over it.
jjppvvee 2 weeks ago
@jjppvvee True, Vancouver is nicer looking, at a glance, than Seattle and Frisco. I enjoy visiting Vancouver from Seattle. It is a very "livable" city and enjoys a worldly top five ranking in that category every year along with Vienna, Austria and a couple of Swiss cities. There are some drug problems, but no sign of gangs and/or thugs. The Public Library is architecturely unique. I could go on and on with positives. However, I feel no attachment to it. Century City in LA is similar.

@JIMBOSKI58 it's filled with gangs and thugs. clearly you don't know vancouvre very well

@Zac6230 I agree with you! jjppvvee works for the Canadian Tourist Office. I've travelled to Vancouver many times and it never fails to disappoint. The homelessness along Hastings is sad.

Seattle is WAY better than "Hongcouver".
JackTheRipper8202 2 months ago
The end was kind of funny because of the whole "Raincouver" thing... but hey, that's what keep our grass green! Regardless, though, a city surrounded by mountains and water is surely a unique living experience. The air is quite nice and very breathable; minimal smog. As for the downtown east side; sure it's very ghetto and sketchy but there are poor neighbourhoods like this in almost every city. Poverty is common but it is unfortunate that change is slow at improving its conditions..

summer time ,? in spring there is no sun ?
georgel19841 2 months ago

GoodG4U2 8 months ago
@GoodG4U2 Vancouver is is beautidul but there is another side its beauty people dont want you to see. Like you said the homless, the druggies, gangs, crime. ect. Why doesnt anyone do a documentry on that???Or even write a letter to the government. In the documenty's about Vancouver they only show the good side cause thier to embarssed to show that inside Vancouver its like a 3rd world country. You got to have money to survive there.

I'm curious what the point of this video is? To persuade the viewer that Vancouver isn't the best city? If that's the case it's a weak video because it never gives any cities that are better, just names other cities that are bad to live in for the same reason (real estate).

hey, you gotta pay up for the good stuff, and i don't know what everyone's problems are with the rain. a little rain never hurt anyone!
RainAngel111 10 months ago
@RainAngel111 a LITTLE rain?? 9 months a year of perpetual rain is not a LITTLE rain! I grew up in LA and NY and I have NEVER experienced depression like I experienced while living in Vancouver for 4 years. Not seeing the sun for that long a period of time is not healthy, mentally. BC has the highest suicide rate in Canada, yet nobody talks about this. The only people who don't have a problem with the weather in Van are the ones that grew up there, period.

youd probably complaign about the heat in africa, but the indeginous people dont
hayo456 1 month ago
@hayo456 funny you should comment, "hayo456". I'm actually living in the desert now where it's 75-118 degrees and almost never rains. My career is soaring, I'm making lots of money and I've never been happier in my entire life. Thank you for taking the time to comment! (ps: a little advice: invest in a dictionary. If you're going to "complain" about something, it will help your credibility if you know how to spell it. Cheers!)

cool, maybe you should invest in some reading comprehension test of some sort, cause you completely missed the point of it
