@rochstan123 JD is the unsung hero in dance. He was doing these moves on Soul Train before meeting Michael Jackson and believe it or not, Jeff was not the first ever to do the moonwalk. I saw an old footage of a black man doing it in the 1930s.
@2009Denisem WOW What a fantastic song.....you know i love shalamar..but i've never heard this one before.....thank you Denise for sharing this fantastic track..and to memyself2K for posting.
es y ha sido uno de mis grupos favoritos, recuerdo los grandes momentos que nos hicieron pasar en Guadalajara, Mexico (Shalamar is and has been one of my favorites, i remember those great moments here in Guadalajara, Mexico) Thanks Shalamar
1:55 there is where you see MJ's moonwalker teacher. This is talent, they all dancing and singing. Shoot I be trying to talk while dancing I'm either going into uncoordination zone, or just fugged up outta breath sentences.
I was just a bit too young to get all this first time around, but it's great to see this style of dance music finally getting the recognition it deserves recently. Classic track!
Jody Watley is a goddess and its taken me nearly 30 years to realise this. She seems quite happy and bubbly in Shalamar though and yet more serious in her solo career.
Oh God do I love this song!!! WHere are the stupid DJ's today killing this music by NOT playing it!!! This is the music of LOve and positivity. this is the music that UNITES I dare a big time DJ to start a BIG Revival of this fabulous music thank you YouTUbe for bringing this to us!!!
True words. Current music sucks - sampled, computer enhanced voices because they just cannot sing WTF! Jodi looks so hot & cute in this one.... pure skill and talent - please let's get back to basics.
@24lisabeth - After playing 2 of these songs, several people will come to the DJ booth to complain about playing "old songs"... it happens every time. Remember anybody in the room that is younger than say... 30, were just babies and sometimes don't remember this good shyt. I'm a mobile DJ and I love all these songs and have all of them, but rarely play them.
I have ALL of Shalamars albums on original cd including the one's with Micki Free, De'Lisa Davis and Sydney Justin. From 1975-1990. Great to listen to.
I do however love this song. The late 70's music was happy feelgood music not the depressing junk on the radio today. This video really takes me back to 1979.
Dear DA90027, I totally agree with you and i can only regret that i didn't come forward to clear those rumors , i just left Shalamar and America. I will tell my story one day about my marrige to Steph. In the mean time enjoy the music and be careful of rumors with no proof to support them. No police or hospital records of abuse. She never said that happened either . Peace
Nope...Jeffrey sang verses on some of the songs...and ppl thought it was Howard. This video is proof that Howard and Jeffrey could sound a like at times.
Jeffrey contributed (mainly) background vocals on the songs. He contributed on this song with Howard. Jeffrey can never sound like Howard. But if you listen to all of their songs, the (main) lead vocals are done by Howard when he joined the group then Jody. This was one of my favorite groups back then. I have all of their albums and their albums on cd. Thanks for your observation.
This group worked hard to keep it going. Imean Howard,Jody and Jeffrey. After that the group went downhill. Howard's and Jody's vocals made that group.
What a great voice and singer. I truly miss our great female singers like Jody Whatley, Deniece Williams, Chaka Khan, Aretha Franklin, etc. What has happened to our female singers. Today we have nobody, all we hear is Beyonce. She wouldn't last a second with these great singers. The sad thing is, if they do a autobiography movie of these ladies, she would probably play their roles. What has happened to our female actresses?
Thanks for informing the public of these legendary female greats. Deniece williams went back to gospel, most of them started out gospel. None of the female singers nor male vocalist today even comes close to the 50's,60's, 70's,80's greats! Tell me if any of them can hit the note of DENIECE and the LATE MINNIE RIPPERTON? not a chance. Don't forget dionne warwick, glady's knight, roberta flack, and diana ross NO one comes close to them. It's all about looks now/marketing!
shalamar is the cream of r&b music howard always was and is a great singer love to see this vid good ol times and jody is very fine in this young video of her. who could forget hewitt on somewhere theres a love just for me. classics
Jody sounded extra sweet on the right time for us,from tha big fun album. And lookin 4 a nu love, and a buncha others.Hot to def.I want her like a keith sweat song.
True. He had left the group shortly before this pre-booked television performance, and when Howard auditioned, he was giving money and a ticket to fly to Jersey to lip-synch this performance.
TPTB RUINED Shalamar...had they left it as the ORGINAL formula where all the members got leads...and traded off on leads in their songs...then I believe things would havebeen different....because forseriously...my FAVORITE Shalamar tunes are the ones where either they all trade off lead vocals...or where Jody and Jeffery have solos.
Yes...and Take that To The Bank....Now, Sweeter As the Days Go By is also a fav of mine...but most that I really LURVE are the ones where they either trade off or Jeffery and Jody Also have leads.
well u no with howard in the group after take that to the bank...the group would have never shared solos like with the original group....because howard wasnt with them when take that to the bank was made...i forgot the guys name though....with howard it was almost always duets between howard and jody
They were sharing vocals when Howard was in the group...just listen to Make That Move *Which is the BEST example*, but also Friends, A Night to Remember, Full of Fire to name a few...most often it was Howard and Jody...but sometimes it was also Howard and Jeffery trading off...and you couldn't tell.
They did share vocals, but the company wanted to focus more on Howard. Plus Jody and Jeffrey wanted to be more involved with the singing while she wanted to do more writing. She's working on her autobiography and we'll finally be able to find out what happened with the group
thats probably also why jeffrey's solo career never really took off..because he wasnt shined on as much.....mstexas....right?? i mean im shocked that jody was more famous than howard as solo artists because he was shined on more in shalamar than she was
That's what shocked the industry; Jody becoming the biggest star of Shalamar. When she left, people though the wasn't going to make it, but she showed them by recording several hits and being honored at last years Billboards Music Awards. Jeffrey is a good dancer and he only recorded one album after he left the group. One of the hits were called Skinny Boys.
I like shalamar style better but It shock the hell out of me to see Jody watley in shalamar I am shocked. I did not know! that is the shit. I 42 I love shalamar
Me too. Jody and Jeffrey were original members of the group. There was 2 other lead singers before Howard was recruited and that was the classic line-up from 1980-1983. Jody is working on her autobiogrpahy and we'll finally find out what happend with the group.
I think Shalamar didnt get paid or was paid very little for their music. Basically they were ripped off. Anyway Solange, Beyonce's younger sister reminds me of a young Jody Watley.
Jody said that. She was only 17 when she signed with Solar Recrds. Plus she and Jeffrey wanted to be more involved with the writing, and singing as well. Jody's style has influenced many artists, and she still has a large fan base. I met her in 2006 and she was real down to earth
Who u telling? Madonna copied her style of fashion, video and dance as well as Michael Jackson's When he was filming the Bad video she was on the set wathcihg him grab his crouch then she started to do the same in her 1989 Express Yourself Video. Jody and Shalamar needs to be honored by BET and Soul Train
Jody watley, patrice rushen, evelyn champagne king, among many needs to be honored. I think envogue, SWV and a few others were the remaining groups that was keeping the old style of singing in the 90's left. The hip hop bs of sampling pretty much destroyed the old way. The beginning days of sampling was ok and revolutionary in a way, but it's to the extreme now and talentless marketing is all I see!
Solange reminds you of Jody Watley?!!!!....You`re shittin me right?...I just seen Solange live in concert at the Houston Rodeo....She opened up for Gladys Knight...And she was horrible, she cant sing, she didnt dance...and her band was suspect. I would advise her to keep her day job. If she was 10% of Watley, it would be an "upgrade"...excuse the pun.
It's ironic you should mention the fact that members got ripped off. Watley, who was to write and release a book, did shed light on the fact that she was taken advantage of during her days with Shalamar. That's one of the reasons why you'll never see a true SHALAMAR reunion.
SHALAMAR was a great group. I collected all of their music from their original vinyl in the late 70's to their CD greatest hits. Watley and hewitt made them great. The original group was called DYNASTY...You can hear jody watley on their hit songs FIRST TIME AROUND and I don''t want to be a freak!
After Jody and Jeffrey left Shalamar, Jeffrey hosted the Britsh version of Soul Train and cheorgraphed videos for Michael Jackson and Vanessa Williams-he cherographed her debut video The Right Stuff. He released a solo album in 1990 that contained the hit Skinny Boys. Jody spent time in London doing session works and modeling and writing and when she retuned to the states, she had an idea of how she wanted to be marketed and she did well. People thought she wasn't goin to make it but she did
Both Jeffrey and Jody were pissed off at Howard because (they say) of his ego problems. Another source said that Jeffrey and Jody were pissed that Dick Griffey was limiting their singing duties and Howard did'nt step in to defend the two. Jeffrey forgave Howard, but as for Jody, theres much more than that to make her not want to come back. On her myspace page, she bitterly wrote that she did'nt want to reunite with Shalamar.
There have been rumors over the years of physical abuse toward Jody from the male members of the group (one such rumor was that Jeffrey once threw her out of a moving van).
I heard that Jeffrew was abusive towards his ex-wife Stephanie Mills. She said that he wanted her to have children and she wasn't ready at that time. Once he made her get out the car while they were on a freeway in LA and he left her there with her luggage
Heres what I just found out that may shock many of you. I found a website that had a list of funk videos and Shalamar released a VHS (obviously only overseas) for their video collection of Three For Love. They released 4 videos from that lp which are "Full Of Fire", "Make That Move", "Work It Out", and "Somewhere Theres A Love". There was no video for "This Is For The Lover In You" as someone claimed.
They air "The Best of Soul Train" and I have seen them on those early shows before Shalamar was formed. One episode, Jeffrey was at the scramble board.
They really and truly enjoyed what they were doing and they loved their music.
Solar Records had some of the best dance music artists ever.
It's always good to relive something beautiful before it fades away totally in the past, it's just too bad that we do not have anyone nowadays that can make music with the same enthusiasm.
I'm not sure if anyone taught the robot to Michael Jackson, but he introduced it in 1973 on ST (while doing "Dancing Machine"). Jeffrey Daniel did'nt start dancing on ST until season 4 (1974-75 season).
Thank you for the clarity on these dates because people love to claim that Jeffrey taught MJ all his moves, which is a mess of an idea, they worked together and Jeffrey with another taught MJ the move.
Look at Jeffrey Daniels doing the robot...2:00-2:08. Thinking like he is the next MJ....though he had the same afro like MJ did in 1978, though. That's bizarre.
Wow!!! back when we had real grooves and the Music was "Pure" oh well at least I was around to enjoy those days in the 70s...I cannot Imagine what it would have been like for me not to have this era of Music in my younger days...as well as the Music of the 60s and 80s as well...the 90s were ok as well...oh the memories.

MUSICENCYLOPEDIA 2 years ago 3

TheBigDisplay 2 years ago
You could be right since I never seen Solange live in concert lol.
kirz778 2 years ago
It's ironic you should mention the fact that members got ripped off. Watley, who was to write and release a book, did shed light on the fact that she was taken advantage of during her days with Shalamar. That's one of the reasons why you'll never see a true SHALAMAR reunion.
NoWayzSafe 2 years ago
She's still working on her autobiography and she said that she will write about what down with the group
MUSICENCYLOPEDIA 2 years ago
SHALAMAR was a great group. I collected all of their music from their original vinyl in the late 70's to their CD greatest hits. Watley and hewitt made them great. The original group was called DYNASTY...You can hear jody watley on their hit songs FIRST TIME AROUND and I don''t want to be a freak!
gerbilkungfumasters 2 years ago
The 2 other original singers before Howard Hewett were Gary Mumford and Gerald Brown.

I knew about Gerald but I didn' know the first one's name.

People thought she wasn't goin to make it but she did

too bad she wont reunite with them

Why?
qolspony 3 years ago
dunno? she won't do vh1's bands reunited, why did she break away from shalamar? stuck up bitter maybe?
mfuji01 3 years ago

Shizzlacher 2 years ago
I heard that Jeffrew was abusive towards his ex-wife Stephanie Mills. She said that he wanted her to have children and she wasn't ready at that time. Once he made her get out the car while they were on a freeway in LA and he left her there with her luggage

Hey sometimes a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do. Only problem is he should have done it sooner, if she was that bad a wife

Is that in her biography or is that just gossip? But if he did that, it wasn't right.

This song was so hot when it came out. It was a new funk sound at the time. I remember hearing it for the first time and just tripping out!

Do you have any other shalamar videos?
babybugz1 3 years ago
Yes, and more likely you seen them already. I was fortunate to catch this one and upload it.
memyself2k 3 years ago
Heres what I just found out that may shock many of you. I found a website that had a list of funk videos and Shalamar released a VHS (obviously only overseas) for their video collection of Three For Love. They released 4 videos from that lp which are "Full Of Fire", "Make That Move", "Work It Out", and "Somewhere Theres A Love". There was no video for "This Is For The Lover In You" as someone claimed.
Azone01 3 years ago
Jody looks really hot in this video :)Pretty & Sexy body and she sure knows how to move it :) Mmmm

She still looks good. Even better than her sister, who's a porn star.

They air "The Best of Soul Train" and I have seen them on those early shows before Shalamar was formed. One episode, Jeffrey was at the scramble board.

This video shows everything about them;
They really and truly enjoyed what they were doing and they loved their music.
Solar Records had some of the best dance music artists ever.
It's always good to relive something beautiful before it fades away totally in the past, it's just too bad that we do not have anyone nowadays that can make music with the same enthusiasm.
Thank you for posting "memyself2k"

The robot was popular dance in the 70s as pop locking.
memyself2k 3 years ago
I find it interesting that Jeffrey did the robot which MJ did the same in the Soul Train performance around 1974-1975.
83survivor 3 years ago
I'm not sure if anyone taught the robot to Michael Jackson, but he introduced it in 1973 on ST (while doing "Dancing Machine"). Jeffrey Daniel did'nt start dancing on ST until season 4 (1974-75 season).
Azone01 3 years ago
Thank you for the clarity on these dates because people love to claim that Jeffrey taught MJ all his moves, which is a mess of an idea, they worked together and Jeffrey with another taught MJ the move.
superman21980 3 years ago
Actually Jeffery was on ST startin gin the 72/73 season.

Yes, about 1980

JD taught MJ the moonwalk and I remember seeing this video in 83. JD was brill.
leketoob 4 years ago
Look at Jeffrey Daniels doing the robot...2:00-2:08. Thinking like he is the next MJ....though he had the same afro like MJ did in 1978, though. That's bizarre.
83survivor 4 years ago
Little known fact: Jeffrey taught Mike the Moonwalk and choreographed his "BAD" video
memyself2k 4 years ago
I heard that. Just kind of interesting to see Jeffrey doing the robot... :)
