To clarify, there are some treatments aimed at underlying causes such as blood pressure. However, if a heart already has a thinned ventricle wall it's difficult to recover. Enlarged heart is most certainly not 'untreatable'.
There is no current 'cure' for an enlarged heart to return to normal. Treatments most frequently include behaviour modification to a healthier lifestyle and symptom management. This therapy is an example - helping to manage the increased stress on the ventricles with a support mesh.
The most common cause of an enlarged heart is chronic high blood pressure. High blood pressure makes your heart work harder to pump out the same amount of blood, which can wear it down over time. This damage leads to thinning of the walls from the ventricle, which of course makes it harder for your heart to pump and this cycle can continue until heart failure in bad cases. Hypertension (high blood pressure) is usually rooted in age, sedentary lifestyle & bad nutrition.
@3ndGroup its often something that your born with, and is EXPENSIVE to detect, because it requires an MRI (magnetic Radio imaging). and is not done in physicals unless requested by parent, and is a rare condition so nobody does.
You know, I've had a couple unexplainable events of shortness of breath and one case of extreme dizziness that lasted for almost two weeks. I've had a physical check up and even blood taken and nothing has shown up.. Perhaps I could have an enlarged heart?
@xjewlover please go to a cardiologist for a complete work up on why your heart is enlarged. It is concerning with your age ... but a cardiologist can provide you with a plan of care more aggressive than a family doctor.
@xjewlover calm down your going to be alright ok just work out and lose wait and don't eat junk food.its alright ask your doctor for help or your parents your not alone :)
@MsWtfisgoingon wrong you can be skinny and have an enlareged heart high cholestorol or high blood pressure cuases the heart to work harder there are 2 reasons why it would be enlarged. becuase like any other muscle when it works harder it becomes bigger and the heart works harder some blood is left behind in the ventricle and streaches the ventricals and can cuase an arrythmya becuase the heart isnt beating the way its supposed to
@modestoca25 many people dont show any symptoms of all, alot of times its basically shortness of breath, being dizzy, light headed, but heart enlargement can be reveresed if you start cardiovascular exercises daily and can make your heart become stronger to pump blood, if your heart has been enlarged for 10years then its probably permanent, but if only for a year or 2, you can reverse it and have it return back to normal size if you exercise and eat healthy and give up soda!
@mukaikof Are you sure? I doubt I have an enlarged heart but I have strange symptoms of shortness of breath and my heart jumping for no reason feeling like its in my throat. I should start exercising.
@DAROMSninja have you been checked out by a cardiologist? or a doctor? they could run some Xrays on it and an EKG or an Ultrasound. do you drink? do you smoke? my advice is to drink plenty of water, like 4-5 glasses a day, and dont drink soda.. if you have a sweet tooth, drink fruit juices, vegetable juices. for your heart exercise, you should lift maybe 5-7lb weights about 60X on each arm a day, and walk for at least 45minutes or jog/run. do a few push ups or bicycle for an hour. these can helpU
@anebt then i dont think its anything to worry about in your situation. i know alot of people with enlarged hearts may experience shortness of breath or lightheadness/dizzy/ always sleepy lack of energy. then i believe your heart health is normal. i mean did any doctor try to tell you there are signs of heart failure in your case? your in good health my friend!
@anebt i cant drink soda though or i havent touched a soda for more than 3 years.i just mainly drink water/juice thats it. i had an ultrasound and an EKG done of my heart, the doctors sayed that my heart was a little bit bigger than a normal size heart, but it is not enlarged or dialated and no signs of heart failure, do you have any signs/symptoms of your enlarged heart?
@anebt damn thats too much. man i hate to hear that you have an enlarged heart. yeah over exercise is never a good thing. what made you decide to do that much intense exercise? i mainly jog about 2x a week and i limit my self to jog about 2miles. i never over do it. i feel great. my heart resting rate is about 50, but the doctors sayed no signs of heart faiulre or heart diease.
@anebt what kind of exercises did you do and for how long? when you exercise, you should only exercise 1hr a day! for many athletes who exercise 5-6hrs a day or every other day mainly are the ones who get or die from heart enlargement!
I have an enlarged heart and my stupid doctor is giving me anti psychotics. I got the enlarged heart by alcohol/steroid use/drugs not anger issues or anxiety. I'm going to die I have irregular heart beat every couple weeks. And lots of chest pain daily.
The heart sits to the left side of the sternum. It is not directly behind the sternum. The lung on the right side has 3 lobes (upper, middle, and lower) while the left side has only 2 (upper and lower); this is why the heart has room to sit on the left side. I am a cardiovascular (heart) nurse. This video is accurate.
Nice looking animation, but the heart is actually located directly in the center of the thoracic cavity behind the sternum, not on the left side of thoracic cavity as shown at :14. This positioning of the heart would leave no room for the left lung.
I just got back from the doctor and she thinks I might have an enlarged heart, Im 28, I run 5 to 6 miles everyday, do not smoke, 4 or 5 beers a week. Im feeling soooo down right now, cant stop thinking about it
@MrLediogjergjani81 there is your mistake man. when you jog/run you should only jog/run about 2x a week and everytime you jog, you should jog no more than 3 miles. many runners/joggers tend to live short lifes. overexercising or jogging puts too much stress/strain on your heart and body. alcohol also causes enlarged heart.
omg the same thing happens to me but to me brian can anyone tell me wat to do QUICK google duzint help and docters say they cant help me and they say im going to DIE IN 6 MOUNTHS HELP!!! PLZ
The really sad thing is, the net is probably plastic and costs at most 20 cents to make, but costs the health insurer several thousand dollars not including the costs of surgery!
@imastoris you're probably right, it's the greedy health insurances and pharmaceutical companies that are profitting, and also mal-practice lawsuits that raise costs--the latter is probably the main reason.
lol i love that you have a sense of humor about it, good luck man, i hope it works out fo you even thought there has to be some sort of slipping issues with this.
my uncle has that but he still alive thank god
