At 1.50 - "Ma bought him a synthesisor, got the Human League in to advise her" - no-one knew who the Human League were then - they were just an obscure, arrogant moody bunch of twiddly-doop keyboardists from Sheffield that had to get 2 teenage girl dancers in before they hit the charts a couple of years later.
This reference went strangely unmentioned during the League's top years...
MPC was recorded Oct-Dec 1979 and released as a single in March 1980
A year later Catheral and Sulley joined the Human League in Oct 1980 after the Heaven 17 split.
"Originally just wanting a single female singer to replace the high backing vocals originally provided by Martyn Ware (Oakey) says that he thought having two female vocalists/dancers would also add potential glamour to the band. "
Dare was released in October 1981. It brought the band to the top of the charts
One wonders if Feargal and Oakey would glare at each other in a chance meeting during the 80's, the former with his two dimensional countenance, the latter from behind his moppy, curtain fringe.
Unfortunately, Feargal is now an extremely dull music biz type representative, bemoaning all the youth for downloading music for free. Check out a recent interview with him on YouTube. He looks like an insurance salesman from Luton.
@bofursgun 'Course they met. Then, the 5-6 wk UK tour was a band's mainstay - long-gone provincial venues: places like St Austell and Peterhead on a circuit with student unions.
Human League's reinvention-lust truly began with the new decade but waited til Ware left. Add the frustration of being trumped by Numan, Foxx &them, and it would've been a laugh seeing Oakey turn his band into the 80s Tony Orlando and Dawn.
& yeah Feargal went corporate in 84 and stayed but Phil's grounded & happy
Oakey seems like a decent enough chap these days, but I got quite the shock when viewing a trite, mundane, humourless Feargal waxing lyrical on the evils of "stealing" music in a dodgy suit.
Granted, pop icons can't all act like as if they're perpetually 22-years old, but Feargal's 180 is nothing short of dreadful.
The Human League made nice, catchy simple pop music, no more no less.
Loved Numan taking the piss out of himself in The Mighty Boosh.
@ lukessummerguitar, I have no idea where it was filmed. I watched a documentary on them a few years ago and they mentioned that they done filming in the bogside, bullpark and brandywell. You could be right though.
I was in Derry last week and I went hunting!...the scene where they are walking up the stairs/fire-escape 0:52 is the old cinema on orchard street.
The staircase is gone, and the door they walk through, but you can still see the marks on the wall.
Stick -Orchard street, Derry- into google maps and then zoom in a bit on the -A-and drop the wee yellow man from street view on top of -E Wall - (East Wall street).
The fire-escape they are on is beside Debenhams store.
Even Martians could identify with this song - I totally love the venom in Feargal's performance here - I laugh my arse off and also see the genius of it.
What a tune, the opening scene of the video was filmed in beechwood avenue in Derry, I used to live in that house a couple of years ago. It was a tip back then and it's a tip now, lol. Great band tho
Any idea where they are at 0:52 to 1:03 ?... Looks like the old Derry market ( where foyleside is now) behind them when fergal reaches the top of the staircase.
The Casbah (Casbah Rock) used to stand on the corner where you go into the top entrance of the foyleside now!
@chinn11 Well, N.I and especially Derry were pretty poverty-stricken back then, not to mention the state of anarchy and civil war that existed there. The thing I've always liked about the Undertones is how they never posed... most punks were middle class brats from well-to-do families wearing expensive "punk" clothing and trying to act tough. These guys never had to pretend.
No, he is a gobshite that Kevin. He still has that fur-lined sheepskin jacket, and with all his work as a solicitor, he totally ignores Sibh, the only girl who would put up with the prat. Last I heard he was living along the Malone Road in Belfast with a bunch of miniature poodles.
@YunaBonbeurre Far from being an idiot, Yunabonbeurre, I have a large music collection, and I mean very large. Since this was released back in 1980 and I've listened to a lot of other great bands in that time, it's understandable that I would forget. One of the great things about Youtube is rediscovering tracks from your youth that you not only enjoyed, but that evoke memories of where you were and what you were doing at the time.
I'm glad i'aint perfekt.I'm just an asshole tikkking on his computer.
