If you know French or German, there's an excellent course by Assimil which contains a good 2 hours of solid Danish audio on CDs. The Teach Yourself course is alright, but after editing out the English off the CDs, there's only about 30 mins worth of Danish audio.
One other resource very much worth mentioning is audio books. You can get recorded literature in Danish like Harry Potter and even more sophisticated novels and things.
@qzchris I hadn't thought about audio books - good idea! Also, I have seen combined audio/story books for kids (i.e. to help them to read) which could be quite useful.
Your so lucky you live in Europe (making it easier to go to Denmark and get resources/practice). Being in Australia, there's limited resources and it's expensive to travel there :(
I'm also trying to learn danish because my grandfather was danish and it got me interested...then i fell in love with the unique language :)
@danazfin Yeah, I completely agree - even from the UK it can be quite expensive to travel to Denmark, plus hotel prices can be steep. Someone advised me to approach the university I work at to ask if there were any Danish students around who would be willing to help me practice. So, if you live near a university, that may be a good idea.
hey roedgroedudenfloede, i'm learning danish too. never been to denmark or met a dane. how much danish is used in denmark, especially considering you're a foreigner and learning the language? i've read conflicting things. also, what other danish films do you enjoy? denmark has great cinema, but being i'm only a beginner, i am having difficulty find good films (and novels for that matter). hope to her from you.
@19fas88 Everyone across there I spoke with could speak good English (even when I tried to speak Danish), and some could also speak a bit of German. They tended to act a bit surprised when I spoke Danish to them.
As for films, it's difficult to choose - I buy them on a whim rather than through reviews!
My friend suggested a holiday in Iceland when we're both 20 (alcohol age limit, hmm), which'll be over the Easter break or summer holiday next. I'd be silly not to take him up on that. How long have you been/are you in Denmark for? And have you bought any novels there? Even if you're not confident enough to read a full novel (I certainly am not) you can still get the odd paragraph. Young teen books would probably be best. I'm sure they've translated Jacqueline Wilson into Danish (hehehe).
@PaulSLambeth Unfortunately, I'm back in Scotland now! I was there for just under a week. I've bought a couple of autobiographical books on football - I'm currently working through these on and off. I'm a strong believer in finding resources (such as books) related to your hobbies or interests, as they are much easier to digest!
One good thing here in Denmark.
The state will pay YOU for study when you are 18 years old. ( 500 - 1000 $ ea month )
