  • Not perfect, certainly--but a VAST improvement over the original's effects--especially during the "timewarp" at the end. The original had goofy shots of the Enterprise sitting still, and wiggling. The remastering actually SHOWS the timewarp.

  • So MeTV showed the remastered episodes.

  • The Enterprise inside the atmosphere always through me a bit, I mean it didn't have anti gravity , and the Bussard collectors are meant to collect interstellar gases, and warp would have torn the atmosphere from the planet.

  • My theory is that the Enterprise ran into the black hole that was created when Nero went back in time and destroyed the Kelvin. :-)

Or perhaps they forgot about the black hole that was created when Spock crashed the red matter-carrying "Jellyfish" into the Narada. D'oh!

  • this cool and sexy if only we could have a version with the new NCC-1701

  • this are good...sometimes the new enhanced versian look comical

  • Where´s the sound?

  • I just got the first 2 season's with the new effects and I'm digging it... The new effects allow you to keep moving with the story instead of having to figure out what that green flash was meant to represent for the next 5 minutes.

This was one of the episodes I showed my girlfriend, pointing out that CGing a model on strings was either absolute genius or entirely a waste of money.... Either way it made us laugh!

As far as the time travel thing goes, I just say to myself "This is Star Trek!"

  • Problem solved...

  • If By "CGing a model on a strings" you were referring to the ship shaking and wobbling in the beginning, Their intention wasn't to copy the model's movements. The wobbling was the result of 2 things. They had used up a lot of power to escape a black hole, that was what brought them to the past. The second was that they were in Earth's atmosphere, fighting the gravity. It was like a plane when it hits an air pocket. Tubulence.

  • @TerminalViscosity good point about figuring out the green flash.these new fx don;t in and of themselves add to the story but they don't distract you from the story the way the (sorry to say it) cheesy fx of the 60's.so in a manner of speaking they do enhance the story. i don't think they look any worse than the cg in,let's say, avatar(which is very weak, storywise).

  • That 'time travel around the sun' thing still makes no sense to me. Perhaps I'm stupid.

  • I believe that the concept is that to time travel, you have to go really really fast. And since the sun has a boatload of gravity, you fly so close around the sun that the gravity makes you go time-travel speeds.

  • Well... still makes no actual sense.

BTW is your name Chri Scumbag or Chris Cumbag? Neither name strikes me as apt for someone who's opinions on quantum physics ahould be taken seriously.

  • It means Chris / Scumbag, if you're curious.

I didn't give you an opinion on quantum physics. I gave you an opinion on Star Trek. Turns out, I'm right. In ST's universe, going at faster-than-light speeds around a sun causes the starship to go back or forth in time. If that makes no sense to you, then either your original comment was accurate - you're an idiot - or you should repeat to yourself "its just a show", and then follow it up with a "I should really just relax."

    :)

  • Okaaay; erm... I've clearly upset you for some reason, It was just a joke and I thought someone who called themselves 'cumbag' would have a better sense of humour. I don't think I'm the one who needs to relax.

    So long, Cumbag.

  • Is is a show? I thought it was part of the historical documents.

  • perhaps you are.

  • Perhaps I'm what? Part of the historical documents? A show?

God, I posted this ages ago; go away and leave me alone.

  • I don't know how they went backwards in time. However, traveling forward in time via special relativity would require great speeds. Eg: for 300yrs to pass by in 1hr you would need to travel at 99.99999999999276% of the speed of light. Doing these speeds in close proximity of a large gravity field (like the sun) will help to reduce this required speed (can't be bothered to do the calculations).

  • Unfortunately, since we are dealing with a craft that travels faster than light anyway, thus defies our known laws of physics (new discoveries in physics may occur), we can only sit back and just accept that Mr Spock knows more than we do and probably has a much better plan.

As for the how and why of special relativity, I am not going to explain it in a limited number of characters through YouTube comments, but I will recommend it. Its really quite fascinating.

  • I liked some of the remastered effects but thought the depth of the Enterprise was less than the original...they should have used the 11 foot model in the Smithsonion to give the ship a less animated look.

  • The 11 footer WAS used, in a way -- it provided the measurements the effects team used when they created the CGI Enterprise.

  • Why is it bumping around at the beginning like a plastic toy on a string? Some like the new effects but to me it looks like a cartoon.

  • You forget one thing. It had just used up a lot of power trying to escape a black hole, that was what brought them to the 1960s. Plus they were inside Earth's atmosphere fighting gravity. It makes sense that it would shake a bit.

  • @eagle219406 The ship was also never designed to enter the atmosphere and would also have a difficult time aerodynamically.

  • I saw a clip were they had the F-104 break apart.

  • the slingshot effect looks great!

now they dint need to do this ''upgrade'' the original still looks great, but many people din't want too watch TOS because the fx looks ''bad'' so...

me? well i already have the TOS DVDs but this maybe a fine thing too have...the first Enterprise (and crew) is my favorite anyway.

    but a digital timer? hmmm...

  • This guy need a phaser up his rear end.The new remasted stuff is great.Besides, anyone that uses the words it's sucked, obviuosely has only 2 inches and is gay.

  • i agree

  • > Besides,anyone that uses the words it's

    > sucked, obviuosely has only 2 inches and is

    > gay.

    BWAHAHAHA. Trekkies ARE weird.

  • @mavericstud1 You'd do wonderfully during a public, poitical debate!

  • wheres the sound,,oh well

  • What is amazing about the remastering of the original Star Trek is that they kept the lettering style from

back then instead of putting something modern and that's a good thing.

  • Shit. This means I'm gonna have to buy the entire series......AGAIN! 1st on video, then 2 episode DVD, then the entire 3-pack DVD set. Ah well, the FX are worth it. Anyone out there wanna buy a slightly used set of Star Trek DVD's?

  • brother,I know exactly what you're going through. Had entire VHS collection, then the DVD's and now they are going to hit us in the wallet again. Rumor has it they're gonna remaster STTNG

  • That's Ok. I wasn't really into TNG anyway. Guess I should consider myself lucky, huh? I only have to buy 3 seasons. And I can't believe these people bitching about "bump maps". Sheesh, don't like it? Don't watch it. I think they did an incredible job. I enjoyed seeing the originals "fixed".

  • thanks for uploading! Can't wait to see it when it hits DVD

  • Sorry, but this shots are horrible! Looks like a "One Weekend Project" Render for me. Cheap! Look at this athmospere - LOL and the moves and sun. But hey, its full HD ROFL. And why has the CG Enterprise less details the the old model. What about bumpmaps?

  • Bump maps were never on the original model.

  • I never said that - LOL. How should a physical model have bumpmaps?

  • Its still better than before, I think. Galileo Seven has some very cool remastered visuals. I just saw it tonight. Very cool!

  • Great effects, there should be music with it though.

  • in the 60's, see this serie remastered...well is fantastic!!

  • no sounds

  • screw the hungry people, if you feed them more, they just breed more, doesnt help....

  • You gotta love how fake the jet looks when in the original it was real footage of a jet , and some of those sky shots the enterprise looks like one of those micro-mini enterprise toys , and how could they get so close to the sun even going at that speed , money is better spent on hungry people.

  • I agree on the atmosphere shots, but overall a good job. I especially like seeing Mercury and Pluto in the shots.

  • A few minor nits, yea, but overall good work from the gang at CBS-digital, they keep getting better at this as they go along.

  • But not perfect at all. The movement of the Enterprise in the atmosphere looks really fake. The sun should be much brighter.

The orbiting sequences are superb though.

  • Much, much better than the original.
