There are two reasons why it was filmed in black and white: Kevin Smith felt that filming it in black and white would give viewers that "feel" of how boring and monotonous it is to work as a clerk. AND because the owner of the store at the time told him to film at night because the production would interfere with his business. You can't tell what time of day it is in black and white. That's why "someone jammed gum in the locks" . . And that's why Kevin Smith is an artistic genius :)

Not exactly, most of the movie was shot at night inside the store. The they couldn't afford proper lighting for color. Thus why they used black and white, because there is less need for lighting.
