Drax is much more efficient than any other power station in the UK. If it was the same size as any other coal fired power station in the UK, it would emit much less. It is only because it is twice the size of other coal fired power stations. And what the hell are they on about Slag? Its a power station, not a steel works. KEEP BUILDING COAL FIRED POWER STATIONS. IF WE DIDN'T HAVE DRAX, THEY WOULD BE COMPLAINING EVEN MORE BECAUSE THEY WOULDNT BE ABLE TO ARRANGE POINTLESS EVENTS LIKE THIS!!!

Drax is the most efficient power station in the uk or even europe. Per megawatt of power generated, it is much more efficient than all the other coal fired power stations in the UK. It is only a higher polluter because it is a much larger generator than other stations. People just dont understand this and then the stupid ignorant twats like this think it is the biggest most inefficient station. I work there. They cause climate change with all the hot air coming out their mouths.

Bloody long haired hippys. Why dont they go and get a hair cut instead of spouting bollocks all the time. They came nowhere near shutting it down. I work at drax and even though they did shut that piece of machinery down, the internal coal bunkers within the boiler house have a big enough capacity to keep the station running at capacity for 6 hours without external supply.

I work at Drax and that is the biggest load of crap that I have heard.These people made no difference what so ever to Drax and production of electricity and they know it ! All they managed to do over the couple of weeks was to smell even worse than when they arrived which was'nt good for the local enviroment and cost the tax payer for policing etc, a lot of money

Deathridesahorse2. Not at all, nuclear weapons are a stupid invention. MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction) is a likely outcome of any future nuclear war - why would anyone want that?

Nuclear power, on the other hand, is extremely safe and useful, as long as it's correctly managed.

I'd rather have a relatively small ammount of nuclear waste to deal with instead of a nation covered with turbines and flooded by dams.

France seems ok and they're more reliant on nuclear energy than we are!

oh yeh i myself just had an exam today in power engineering (power generation, supply and distribution in the uk) so im tanked up on soon-to-be-forgotten electrical facts. for example if more than 20% of power comes from sources with a low load factor then the supply becomes unstable and voltages in your home will drop below the governments statutory limits.

We need less CO2 in the air, but coal makes 40% of our electicity. I grew up not far from Drax which itself is very close to 2 other coal fired power stations, which together produce over 15% of the UK's electricity. None of my friends or family suffered ill health because of this when we were young. I don't doubt what happened to Phil1960's parents, but I can only comment on my own experiences. If we just use less electric, the problem will sort itself out!

Sure, nuclear power plants are so much worse than coal. I'll believe that one...

The solution is not in any one power source. It would be just as foolish to rely on windmills or solar power as it would be to rely solely on coal or nuclear. The proper solution is to diversify energy sources. Some coal, some nuclear, some solar, some wind, etc. That way we're not relying on the availability of any one resource.

Your comment makes it sound like I'm being naive for not wanting to shut down the world's power plants TODAY. I was just over a year old when we moved to Slough in Berkshire. It was only about half a mile away from a power plant, for 22 years I lived in that house until I moved to another one, which is even nearer, only a quarter of a mile away, which my family have lived in for nearly 24 years.

Over that period, I had seen my mother die and my father suffer due to health problems that relate to the pollution from that plant.
