Last time I checked Palm treo was a Mp3 player, PDA, Cellphone, internet device with touch..

Apple just copies. They have no taste all they did was. Put a new touch screen and used a OS that is free and change things around and make $ 300 more profit. Creative!

And for Your Information Apple has never been in Charity, they are a business who sell their work fro money and pay their employee, manufacturers, subcontractors with that same money.

And Still, The iPhone 3G is the most usefull, Usable SamrtPhone That I ever used (and I Have access to all of them through a friend working for a "Cellphone/PDA" Magazine wich Buy released Phone/Smartphones/PDA etc (not given by manufacturers))

to be honest i don't have an iPhone, don't want one either. but a few friends have it and the agreement seems to be its "ok" the iPhone still has massive flaws with it, the poor 3g reception for example (2.1 hasn't fixed everything)

it has nice features no doubt though

You forgot support for Turn-By-Turn GPS and support for SlingMobile so I can watch TV on it. I own a black 16GB 3G iPhone (had the 1st gen before that too) and I love it, but yeah, I'm dissapointed and somewhat angry that it's missing alot of these features. If Apple would finally get it's shit together and get at least half of that list up and going it would in my opinion be the greatest phone ever made. (Trust me my first phone was a black graphics yellow backlit Nokia brick)

oh and by Law in France any Sim-Locked Phone, must be unsimlockable for Free (Zero bucks) 6 months after the purchase, by the carrier (chitchat on the phone, you give them your EMEI and the give you the unsimlock code or procedure)

Absolutely no idea about It AT&T, but in UK it's predicted/rumored with Pay as you go arond christmas.

But as The carrier does a big Subsidizing (in exchange of a 2 year contract), expect to pay a lot more (In France around 700€, in belgium less than 700€ etc.).

Like any other phone, without contract cellphone ever gonna be more expensive

He had a rare form of the cancer that is curable, which he indeed had cured a few years ago. Steve has discussed his health with a journalist from the NYTimes recently, and while he did have an illness, thankfully it wasn't life threatening and it wasn't a recurrence of cancer.

Nobody is obligated to a contract when buying from a Apple Store, and certainly there should be no increase in price as punishment if you choose no contract either. I am surprised there are no lawsuits against Apple/AT&T and this is bad. It reflects how naive and/or easily controlled people are by accepting this behavior from lucrative companies. What if When buying a computer they told you "you have to sign up for Internet service, it's required", would you agree?

You Should Sue US Governement or State, or whatever, THEY allowed Cell provider to exclusively tie Cellphones to contracts, US Authorities DIDN'T made Law Forcing Each cell phone to be ALSO sold Untyied in any way

There are countries outside of USA, and some of them Do have law against exclusive tyings....

And about your last exemple, there used to be subsidized computer tyied to Internet plans...

Yes, non-commitment plans are much more expensive: $599. It's not really a scheme, it just covers things like termination fees in that particular plan.

Soeey to answer no, for now the nearest deserved countries are Philippines and Singapore.

But situation is rapidly changing even here in europe

An WWDC Keynote there were 70 countries closed on the 2008 release planning, but today 75 countries are concerned, you better chech reliable source for Malaysia regarding iPhone 3G and be carefull with wannabe unlocked iPhone 3G vendor as today no iPhone 3G is out neither are the Jailbreaker/unlocker ready for It.

Keep an eye on countries where It can officially be sold unlocked (of course not at the subsidized price, but won't be locked in a 24 month cellular plan either)

If you can wait, and have a functionnal Phone that meet your need, you could wait at least the official release in Philippines and Singapore, untill then, things may evolve, as Apple doesn't communicate on projects but only on what's done signed and numbered.

If you look at how communicate on Computers you'll se what I mean :

you know what apple and att are made plan that apple gone cost the new iphone for just $199 but the at&t is now changed the data plan, before it was $20 per month and now its $30 per month, 24 months its gone be $240 extra we are gone pay to att so i think sprint is the best !!

There is no catch only Apple allowing subsidizing like all other phone manufacturers:

Subsidizing : a direct rebate on the price of a device (here a phone) conditioned to taking at the same time a xx month (here 24month) contract with a service provider (here a phone carrier)

phone carrier have done this for ages, Asus with It's EEEPC has done the same in some country in conjuction hith some wireless carrier (same as phone carriers), the Pack being an EEEPC+a USB 3G+ dongle+subscription

Apple choosed to delegate the distribution to the carriers they closed deal with, and depending on the politic of the carrier and the laws of the countries, the carrier will have to *ALSO* sell It unsubsidized or not. In USA and UK there isn't such laws, but in France, Belgium and Italy there are.

Of course unsubsidized Phones are always more expensive. France had the the v1 iPhone etc.

iPhone 3G (v2) are for now pure speculation as no carrier made official statement regarding Prices and plans

You Get what you pay for, and the exact terms used by Jobs and th PR stuff is not about cheapness but about iPhone 3G being sold at a price which make It *MORE AFFORDABLE*.

Apple refused to officially subsidize the 1st iPhone by instead asking back from the carrier 30% of the contracted plan, but if the iPhone price wasn't directly subsidized, the 30% plan back allowed Apple to keep the price lower than It' real cost.

in France with the law against tied only Phone, we tasted the amount of that 30% cash back (read the other posts)

Jobs said it will be 199 USD max subsidized around the world, we'll need to see if the change rate will be fair or not

So even in Europe, even in €uros, even unsubsidized and unlocked, the iPhone 3G (v2.0) will be cheaper than the 2G (1.x)

great! but things have CHANGED... you can NO LONGER buy an iPhone WITHOUT buying the CONTRACT at the EXACT same time.

Thus, the iPhone is really $439, NOT $199... since it's IMPOSSIBLE to get one WITHOUT signing a 2 YEAR contract for $70 plus tax a MONTH.

Is this what people are overlooking? It seems so... Don't be DUPED, the new iPhone is $40 MORE no matter how you slice it!

There wasn't any LEGAL* way to get an iPhone without AT&T contract in the USA.

and again AT&T did choose to charge more for their contract not Apple (Apple even dropped their 30% taxes).

while Apple decided the price of their iPhone, not AT&T (including the amount of the subsidizing) and It's cheaper

* using It with another USA carrier after buying It while still keeping the Apple warranty : NOT jailbreaking It (as some early adopter got caught by requiring servicing from Apple Store).

The Fact Is that the US law doesn't force cellular operator to sell non contracted telephones

in most of European country each Phone MUST be ALSO sold untyied from any operator, contract, SIM Locking, but this obligation doesn't exist in the USA so only Price for Tyied Phone are disclosed and talked about

each cellular operator do choose Its own subsidies, own plan prices etc., Apple can only set the maximum public whished price for Its phone distributed by the chosen operator
